About this property

Charming 15th century cottage in elegant and historic Hingham

Bank House is a 15th-century timber-framed building with wattle and daub walls, it has been fully restored using traditional methods and reclaimed materials wherever possible.

It lies just a short stroll from the pretty market place in the fine and ancient town of Hingham - with it's Grade II listed, Georgian architecture.

Inside - The living room kitchen and dining room are open plan, with original cast iron radiators, traditional Norfolk pamment and English oak floors throughout.
A cosy wood-burning stove is the focal point of the living room with initial logs provided. Sofa and two small armchairs smart TV, board games and books.

Beamed farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room with inglenook fireplace, butlers sink, oven and grill with ceramic hob, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, microwave, fully equipped with pots, pans and crockery. Washing machine with washing liquid provided.

Boot/coat room. Steepish, winding stairs to the first floor:

Double bedroom with huge Georgian leaded window overlooking the garden. Extra wide English oak floorboards. Chest of drawers and hanging space.

Second bedroom with twin antique single beds, bedside table, built-in wardrobe on landing outside.

Bathroom with separate shower cubicle, restored roll-top bath, WC with antique high-level cistern.

PLEASE NOTE -There are several low beams throughout the cottage so please remember to duck if you don't want bumps in the night. The floorboards are stepped, and sloping in places - the delights of a medieval cottage but may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

* New for summer, our lovely garden studio with a futon and outdoor beanbag for relaxing, reading and enjoying the garden. Opening out onto the courtyard and garden it could also sleep an adventurous teenager. Please contact us if you would like to use it for accommodation as there will be a small surcharge.

Centrally placed to explore Norfolk with its wonderful coastline and the famous Norfolk Broads. Wroxham, the capital of the Norfolk Broads is 29 miles away with daily boat hire and river trips, waterside cafes, restaurants and shops. The North Norfolk coast is approximately 35 miles, with Cromer, Wells, Brancaster, Blakeney and Great Yarmouth within easy reach. Thetford Forest, 15 miles, has designated picnic areas, walking trails, Go-Ape zip line and treetop walkway challenges. Designated off-road cycling tracks for experienced and novice cyclists. Good cycling and walking directly from the door. Golf courses nearby. Norwich city, 13 miles, for excellent shopping - two shopping malls, cathedral, theatres, castle museum, restaurants, pubs and cafes. Freshwater fishing (with licence) 1 mile. Snetterton racetrack, 10 miles.

We allow up to two well behaved dogs but please don't let them upstairs or on the furniture. The garden is private and secluded, but estate railings divide the garden from next door and any small or inquisitive pooches could escape, so please supervise at all times.

A shared entrance way on the Market Place in Hingham, leading to a private entrance and secluded garden.

There is free unlimited Wi-Fi, which is generally good, but the mobile signal inside the cottage can be intermittent. The signal can be picked up outside, but for this reason, we provide a landline with an honesty box for calls.

Hingham is a thriving small town, surrounded by fields and countryside, but with excellent access to all Norfolk has to offer.

Our local gastropub The White Hart is just across the road and serves excellent food and local ales, there are also two cafes and a takeaway. The local bakery provides fresh bread and delicious home made cakes and there is a greengrocer, butcher, chemist and local store, in fact, everything you could possibly need!

Relaxing stay in historical house in Hingham
Fabulous 6-night stay. Louise was a fantastic host; great communication, met us on arrival for tour of the house (also very kindly left us nice bottle of wine, crisps and a large carrot cake from the local bakery on the dining table, as well as fresh milk and eggs in the fridge!). Beautifully renovated house, tastefully and comfortably furnished, warm and cozy. Kitchen very well stocked with good quality pans, cooking utensils and SHARP knives!!!! She had supplied tea, coffee (instant and coffee pods for the Nespresso machine, as well as a milk frother), sugar, hot chocolate (even marshmallows), as well as salt/pepper grinders and olive oil. Washing machine and dishwasher (powder/tabs supplied), huge fridge and reasonably sized freezer. 4 slice toaster and great oven/grill/induction hob. Living room was very cozy with comfy sofa and chairs in front of a wood fired stove - Louise supplied kindling and logs for the fire (we bought extra at Co-op as we had fire going every night). The hallway by the stairs was well stocked with books, board games and children's book/toys. Bathroom had a shower (powerful stream) and a roll-top bath - hot water was instant and plentiful. Master bedroom was absolutely stunning with big Georgian window and exposed beams. Comfy double bed but bit short for my 6'2" partner. 3 very low beams in house that needed to duck under (I'm 5'9) and definite pitch to upstairs floorboards but got used to it quickly. Would love to stay again!

Didn't want to leave
A beautiful house with so much character and warmth. We had cosy a wood burner to look forward to in the evenings. Perfect location for access to rural dog walks. Lovely dog friendly pub opposite. Everything we needed and more. Would have loved to have stayed longer. Thank you Louise who was a lovely host and with a yummy ginger cake from the local bakery to welcome us.

Amazing period cottage in quiet village location
My family (4 adults & 2 dogs) stayed at Bank House 15-19 April 23 & had THE most amazing time. We met Louise at her lovely shop Mongers & she showed us round & gave us the keys.. She had kindly left a lovely cake, eggs, milk etc to start us off & every possible permutation of beverage on the shelves! The cottage has period charm by the bucket load & left us all wanting to live there permanently. Every beam, floorboard (beautifully creaking every time you tried to sneak to the toilet in the night 😂) fireplace & accessory were gorgeous & all in keeping with the age of the property. The beds were so comfortable & all the bed linen & towels were lovely quality. We had 2 doggies with us which had a nice box of treats left & who both enjoyed the beautiful garden, which was totally secure & nice to sit with a glass of wine & enjoy the peace & quite - as well as having a lovely chat at the gate with Louise who funnily enough also had a glass of wine! The village was small but had everything you need really close by, the White Heart opposite did a great Sunday roast in the evening & The Hingham Fish & Chip was a minute walk & did one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. Co Op was a 5 minute walk away & local shop 1 minute. Do give the Community Art Centre a visit, any profits support the local village which is lovely. We did the English Whisky Distillery tour which was so interesting & full of lovely staff who are so passionate about what they make - turned my mum off gin & on to whisky lol Also went to Horning & went on The Southern Comfort paddle boat for a 90 minute trip up the Broads which was £10 very well spent & a great lunch in The Swan. We had a wonderful trip & so enjoyed staying at Louise’s truly magical home. I can’t recommend Bank House highly enough, we all fell a little bit in love with the place & were very sad to go home. Thank you so much Louise ❤️

We look forward to welcoming you to Bank House and this beautiful part of the country, there are so many lovely things to discover.
We live and work next door, where my husband Sam runs his architectural salvage business. We are both passionate about reclamation and the restoration of architectural antiques and many of the items we sell have been used in the cottage.
We are almost always here to let you in and show you around, otherwise, one of our friendly staff will greet you. The cottage is then yours to enjoy, but we are nearby if you need any local information or suggestions for places to visit.
