About this property
Peaceful countryside setting, private pool yet close to the village.
Les Cerisiers is a large house on the outskirts of the medieval village of Chalabre, surrounded by farmland and forest in one of France's 'hidden secrets'. The area is wonderful for walkers and cyclists and the mountains are very close. There are lots of family-orientated attractions close-by and the Mediterranean beaches are an easy drive away. The local French people are very friendly and welcome visitors. Chalabre is just one kilometre away and has a small supermarket, cafes, restaurants, doctor, pharmacy, butcher, baker, etc.
The accommodation comprises the complete top floor of the house with separate entrance and separate access to the pool and grounds. The owners live on the ground floor and there are no other guests. The modern fitted kitchen is equipped with electric range cooker, washing machine, microwave, fridge/freezer and Neff dishwasher. One bedroom is a double with ensuite shower and wc. The second bedroom is a double and the third has twin beds. The main bathroom has a full-size bath with shower - perfect for bathing the children at bedtime. And if guests find they can’t leave work behind there is a desk and free wifi, subject to reasonable use.
We provide a welcome pack of basic food items, just in case you arrive too late for the shops.
Outside - a door from the dining room leads onto a private balcony overlooking the garden and the swimming pool beyond. Steps lead down to the garden, which has a barbecue area and table in the shade of tall trees. A few steps further lead to the 10 metre x 5 metre swimming pool. A large play/recreation area is beyond the pool; as the pool is fully fenced, children can play safely in the garden separated from the pool area. Beyond the immediate garden, a gate leads to woodland and the L'Hers river, or you can turn left or right and follow the field boundaries which follow the river banks. Or just curl up with a book in the shade of a tree and relax in the peace and quiet.
Beyond - the area is heaven for walkers and mountain bikers, with literally hundreds of official paths and tracks leading through the hills and mountains (maps are available to consult and plan your routes). Road cyclists can travel for miles on quiet, almost traffic-free roads.
The area offers a wide range of attractions within easy reach; the beautiful medieval town of Mirepoix with its Monday market, the dinosaur museum at Esperaza, the prehistoric cave paintings at Niaux (one of the few remaining where you can actually visit the original paintings rather than replicas) and the remarkable city of Carcassonne, a World Heritage site that from a distance looks like a Disney movie set. The hot springs at Ax-Le-Thermes are housed in modern, purpose-built baths and are a great outing for everyone.
You are in the heart of Cathar country here, with its rich heritage going back hundreds of years. Fans of Kate Mosse ('Labyrinth', 'Sepulchre' and 'Citadel') will feel at home, and there are many Cathar castles to visit, most of which are perched on mountain-tops.
We provide all bed linen, towels and pool towels. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

We were delighted to host Rhiannon, Simon and Henry. Not only did they make the most of the pool, they were most impressed by the many tracks and trails that took them into the heart of the countryside. Maybe they will come back and continue exploring!

Relaxed stay in beautiful area with welcoming hosts
Property is perfect for a family stay, roomy, clean, and everything you need inc English TV for the kids and a few games. Swimming pool was lovely, clean, and gated for safety. Hosts were both welcoming and very helpful with bits of advice or loaning of an umbrella when occasion arose.
The area is tranquil and beautiful, nearby towns, villages and lakes have everything you might need and make for lovely outings. Lots of good visits further afield too but we didn't bother.
Recommended, and we may well book again.
Alan & Barbara are truly excellent host. They made us feel very welcome and even made sure we had some basic supplies on our arrival (incl. wine !). They spent a lot of time and energy renovating their house / gite, and the end result is exquisite (incl gardens & pool). There are many activities for children in the area (tree trekking & water sports at Lac de Montbel, cycling on the Voie Verte, white water rafting and sightseeing in Foix, caves, and many more !). We would happily go back there and would highly recommend that you give it a try, you won't regret it.

Thank you for your kind comments, and we are so glad that you made the most of just some of the many activities and attractions in the area. As you discovered, the Voie Verte offers 38km of safe and almost flat off-road walking, running and cycling. We would love to welcome you back!

Comfortable, spacious, well appointed with everything you need for an excellent holiday!
A spacious, well appointed property in a great location to explore the Cathar region of the Aude and Ariège with places like Mirepoix, Foix and Carcassonne within easy travelling distance, you’re never short of day visits. If you’re into cycling or walking, you’ll never be stuck for a glorious scenic route.
Alan and Barbara live on site and although we were their first visitors, they instinctively knew when to interact or leave us alone. We never felt that their presence was constraining or intrusive, rather, they assisted in making our stay much more enjoyable with their knowledge of the typically French events helping us to get the most out of the area. Their swimming pool was great on the frequent hot days. The accommodation has everything you need and we could not find fault with it.
As hesitant users of accommodation with the owners on site, Alan and Barbara unexpectedly enhanced our experience and we wouldn’t hesitate to revisit them when we return to this wonderful region of France.
We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to South West France. Alan and Barbara are perfect hosts - warm, welcoming and thoughful- nothing was too much trouble and they anticipated and met our every need. The house is spacious and well-equipped and pool and garden delighful. The setting is fabulous - peaceful and relaxing with georgous views over fields and woodland and the foothills of the Pyrenees Audoise. Just outside Chalabre, the location is great for exploring the upper Aude and Arriege area and there is good walking and some fine eating in the area. I'd recommend an early visit to the tourist office (Office Intercommunale) to pick up individual walks leaflets. Alan and Barbara have an excellent library of novels, history and French language, history and culture books, so save weight in your luggage. Our weather was varied- unseasonably cool and damp on some days, very warm and sunny on others, but there are places to visit and things to do whatever the weather. We'd thoroughly recommend it and may well return ourselves.

Andrew and his family were delightful guests. Unfortunately they were with us for only one week and we would love to welcome them back to explore the area further.

Thank you for your kind and positive words Suzanne, and for the useful guidance points for other potential guests. We were delighted to host you and it was a pity that you had to cut your visit short. We hope to see you again!
Wow, we have just returned from our 2 week holiday, and what an amazing time we had! Beautiful property with stunning views of the Pyrenees. The house is extremely well equipped, with everything you could possibly need, and the pool is fantastic. Alan and Barbara are the perfect hosts, giving us lots of advice and recommendations on places to visit.
An absolutely brilliant holiday, we look forward to returning!
We spent a superb week at this property and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. Perfectly positioned to allow us to make use of all of the local points of interest and also a great property to spend a day by the pool. Alan and Barbara were amazing hosts and made us feel so welcome. Always on hand if you need them we could not have asked for anymore. Thank you for your hospitality and we look forward to returning in the future.
We have had a fantastic holiday! A good balance of being able to just relax by the fantastic pool admiring the scenery plus beautiful places to visit close by.
The house was clean and tidy and offers everything we needed for our holiday and we would love to return.

About the host
Hosted by Alan & Barbara
We are an active, outgoing retired couple enjoying life in this beautiful area of France. We speak basic French and are delighted to give advice on the best places to visit and how to make the most of your stay.
Why they chose this property
The people here are very friendly and welcoming to visitors. It is a rural community, far away from any big city, with a relaxed pace of life. People smile easily and whether they are serving you in a shop, restaurant or cafe they seem happy to be there and pleased to see you.
We provide a welcome pack of essentials like milk, tea, coffee, croissants, jam, etc. During your first week we offer a free wine tasting. We are not experts or connoisseurs but will be happy to introduce you to some of the wines of the area.
What makes this property unique
The views from the balcony take in the fields and woods surrounding the property. You can swim in the pool or just relax poolside and drink in the views of the Pyrenean foothills. Looking up, you are likely to see buzzards, kites, eagles and vultures circling overhead. Fishing is available in the River Hers at the bottom of the garden. During your first week we offer a free wine tasting session, giving you an idea of the range of wines available in the are.
