The Mermaid's House:
The Mermaid's House is the perfect West Marin getaway. Located on the waterfront of pristine Tomales Bay, it is an ideal spot to relax and unwind. The house is literally built out over the water, so there is nothing between you and the picturesque Point Reyes National Seashore as you gaze out through the giant glass windows.
The Mermaid's House offers amazing views of the abundant birdlife that inhabits Tomales Bay and it is not uncommon to spot a seal or two swimming by to say, "hello." The house, nautically themed, creates the illusion that you are traveling aboard a lavish ship, without the seasickness of course. The spacious interior of the house has an air of tasteful class while maintaining a cozy rustic feel.
Complete with a grassy front yard, large deck with a hot tub, and its own pier, the Mermaid's House is also well equipped for outdoor living. Whether you spend your time in West Marin hiking in the park, kayaking on the bay, or just relaxing, the Mermaid's House is the perfect setting to enjoy some world famous oysters, have a drink, and look out across the bay as the sun sets.
Amenities: Jacuzzi/jet outdoor spa, gas log fireplace, Wi-Fi (wireless internet), phone (free long distance within the continental US), satellite flat screen TV with built in DVD player, stereo/CD player, fully equipped kitchen, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, barbecue, deck tables and chairs, teakwood "steamer" reclining deck chairs. *(No smoking. Sorry, no young children: due to the location of the house over the water. No pets: due to the sensitive nature of the environment.) **(Sorry, we cannot accommodate large gatherings or parties.)

Really lovely property. Enjoyed the proximity to the different oyster restaurants, and the deck to sit on over the water. This is a duplex, but we really couldn’t hear the people that were staying in the other unit. Only caveats are that you need the mobility to be able to climb a ladder-like stair to get to the bedroom loft, and also the loft has a very low ceiling over the bed, might be too much for a tall person.
Such a beautiful spot over the water. Peaceful and easy to park. Space was great. Small kitchen but able to do all the cooking we wanted with the 2 burner stove and Ninja air fryer/countertip oven. Also, the property had Weber BBQ with briquets that allowed for fresh BBQ oyster feast. Hot tub was great too. Highly recommend.
This place feels like home! Well thought out amenities and whimsical, charming decor. It had everything I needed, a cozy hideaway on the water. With the private deck and hot tub you can stay in with a good book or explore Tamales Bay and the nearby headlands. Close to good restaurants where oysters and seafood abound.. It was just what I needed to refuel and refresh.
Tranquil getaway, but with a hot tub under the stars
Nice, small, private, quiet, with view of nature and easy access to outdoor activities. Very small kitchen but managed to cook a couple romantic meals!
Enjoyed a fantastic stay at this beautiful place. It has everything one could possibly need and is a perfect place to forget about the world and truly relax and unwind. It's an absolutely wonderful property and our hosts were positively magnificent, as well. Thank you for such an exceptional stay!

Meredith, Thank you so much for taking the time to review. We never get tired of hearing guests really enjoyed their stay. Fred and Karen
My mom and I stayed here for a few nights. We enjoyed sitting on the deck during the day and relaxing in the hot tub in the afternoons. We have no complaints! The house is decorated really nice and it was very clean upon arrival. We will be staying here again for a girls trip in the future!
The property is incredibly charming and well maintained and very clean. The place is perfectly set up for a romantic weekend for two. We sat on the comfortable lounges, enjoyed the hot tub at night and cooked breakfast in the kitchenette. The bed is very comfortable and the upstairs loft is cozy. The Marshall market restaurant is right down the road and a favorite of ours. We hope to come again and highly recommend
For those who always wanted to live on the water, this place is perfect. The apartment is charming, well taken care of. It’s a romantic spot, that offers all the comfort of a home. We received the right indications and the check in and check out processes have been smooth. Definitely recommended.
Lovely cozy home with a very private deck (and hot tub) right over the water. What’s not to love? Steps to the loft where the bed is located could be treacherous if you need to get up often at night. Minimal indoor cooking capacity but… close to 2 good restaurants. Plenty to do, or just chill on the deck.
The unit was lovely, clean, cozy and peaceful. Amazing deck and hot tub, with views / sunsets across the bay. And, I think we were very fortunate since the houses/units on both sides of us were unoccupied, which made the space and setting that much more relaxing and felt like all our own for a weekend. Easy parking right in front. One very minor downside for us is that you cannot walk anywhere from here - it's a very narrow stretch of the road with little/no walking space - so we had to drive anytime we went out.
I have stayed here before and it's just great. The host is a great communicator, the house is always as described and has amenities beyond a lot of hosts. Hot tub was clean and working, and the location is so, so, so quiet.
If you plan on cooking a lot, I'd recommend you bring your seasonings, etc as the pantry is limited, but offered for free, so, hey, what are you gonna do?
WiFi isn't the fastest, so using this as a 'Work From Remote,' spot may not be the best for videoconferencing. It's fine for email and watching a streaming service movie though.
5 stars and hope to be able to stay again in the future!
Just the type of place we like. The deck had great views and most importantly the privacy fence blocked the prevailing north breezes. Made morning and evening pleasant enough as we had both morning coffee, breakfast, wine time and dinner outside even though fog prevailed on 2 days. Had an amazing sunset one evening. Inside was well decorated with nautical theme. Kitchen nicely stocked. Bathroom was very spacious. Didn't use the hot tub though owner had turned it on for us. And had no time for any TV. The loft was cozy. Had to watch our heads as ceiling was low at headboard end. Also, the staircase up to the loft was steep. Almost a ladder angle. Careful coming down. The quarters were warm enough without using the fireplace. Very good communications with the owner. Thanks! Would love to return!
My partner and I chose this spot because it looked like a wonderful getaway from the stressors of life. When we arrived check-in was just as described. Fred made everything easy and all was explained in the folder of information. The loft bed was lovely and cozy…we ended up resting in the space one whole day - including cooking breakfast there. Definitely need to shoot for any food you want to cook or snacks in town since the location is about 9 miles outside of town. Also, when we were in the hot tub, the temp kept decreasing (hoping this is a quick fix since we definitely want to return and the stars at night are beautiful!). We were there on our own most of the time, but guests arrived for the Admiral’s Quarters the night before we left - no noise issues that we experienced, but that could vary I imagine? Clean-up and check out were a breeze as well. We had a wonderful time and hope to return here for another getaway soon!

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for your nice comments, I’m glad you enjoyed your get away. Regarding the hot tub losing heat while in use is normal especially when the temperature difference is about 40 degrees. The hot tub can only catch up when the cover is put back on. The tub is relatively new and I believe functioning as it should.

Crew Quarters :quaint, quirky, and comfy but....
This was our first visit to the Point Reyes station area, and we weren't quite sure what to expect. The lodging options were few and far between, and when we found the Mermaid Cottage, we were pretty excited- no frilly B&B atmosphere, right on the water, not too far (15 minute drive) from Pt Reyes Station. For the most part, the area and the cottage lived up to our expectations. Fred was very helpful from start to finish. The cottage was clean and cute, and with an unbeatable location on the water. We had been advised before booking that the sleeping area was in a loft space, with a low ceiling and accessed by a steep stair/ladder -it all worked out well for us, but the ladder might pose some challenges for some guests.
A few aspects of the cottage could use some upgrades which would make it more enjoyable: It could really use a new tv, maybe add an iPod docking station or Bluetooth speaker, and replace the oldest appliances in the kitchen. Also, the folder with helpful local contacts/businesses was from 2006, so not too helpful.
Given the seemingly high nightly rate, maybe we just expected more. It wouldn't take much to make this cottage worth every penny- it really is a great spot for a weekend getaway to a beautiful area. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit overall .

We are happy to say that we have a new flatscreen TV and new appliances.
Stayed here for a week and it has a beautiful view of the bay. You are literally on the water with access to the dock. Definitely took advantage of that and the water on the really hot days. Only suggestion would be to have an umbrella on the deck for those (me) who can't stay out in the sun all day. Would be nice to still be on the deck but out of the direct sun. The hot tub although small, can fit two people comfortably, was nice to use in the evenings and early morning before it got hot.
Keep in mind the house although cute, is small. So don't plan on going with a group. In that case, rent their other suite next store, the Admirals Quarters. The kitchen is also small, tiny sink, no oven only a small toaster oven, and two electric burners. It can be hard to maneuver especially when cooking a full on meal. But it gets the job done.
It is also not really mentioned, but the stairs leading up to the bedroom loft are pretty steep. We couldn't take any of our luggage up there because we just didn't feel safe trying to lug everything up and down those stairs, which almost felt more like a ladder. But the windows do have a nice view of the bay when you wake up and all in all it is cute area to sleep. The sofa also folds out into a bed if needed.
All in all its a small cute suite but you are definitely paying for the view. They were also accommodating to a request we had which we were grateful for minus some communication issue early on in our stay. Thank you for the stay!
So many great things about Crews Quarters
1. The view!!!
2. The location to great restaurants, numerous outdoor activities
3. Peaceful/tranquil
4. Super clean
5. Definitely would recommend to friends/family
Thank you for opening up your space and giving us an opportunity to experience Marshall and all it has to offer.
My husband loves Marshall so we came to celebrate his birthday. The cottage is comfortable and quiet. We did communicate with the owner a couple of times. He was very responsive and accommodating.
