Great location, good off road parking. Large bedrooms with plenty of storage space. Nice well equipped kitchen but would be quite small for a family of six. Outside space looking tired needs some attention but overall a nice place to stay.
Spacious modern apartment, plenty of parking, excellent location in the heart of Old Shanklin, helpful owners and easy to contact and private garden space. Only slight downside, the shower room needs attention. Would stay again

Hi Brian,
Thank you very much for your review. It was very nice to meet you all and hope to see you again.
Perfect location and very well equipped My only disappointment was that the outside seating was in the shade for so much of the afternoon and evening.
Lovely and sunny earlier!
The property is in an excellent location and very well appointed. The kitchen was very well equipped with good sized appliances. Also very comfortable sofas and beds and lots of storage and hanging space for the five of us who enjoyed the walking and for some an autumn swim.
Unfortunately I didn’t get the details about the key and access to the property. Luckily when we arrived there was someone at home to assist.
Lovely long weekend in a great location.
Property is a good size and was more than big enough for our party of 6
The only down side we found was the parking
As we had a mini van, the width of the space to get to the parking at the side of the property was too narrow and therefore had to resort to parking in a car park at the end of the road at extra cost.
Other than that, no issues and had a great stay
Good location, clean and nicely decorated. The main bathroom could be better - it suffers from being on a basement location. The bathroom could do with a complete refurb bit the rest of the property was very good.
Access to car park is a bit tight but gets easier as the week goes by.
We had a very enjoyable stay in the roomy apartment. Only downsize was that if we were staying longer there was not enough kitchen equipment.mixing bowls ,whisk, sharp knives. I might be in the minority but we always go self catering and i cook our meals.maybe if we are away for a week we would only gonout a couple of times .
Tired and run down. The outside furniture and BBQ were unusable. The shower tray overflowed and the toilet in the bathroom had defective plumbing. No nonslip mat for shower over bath and shower head was loose and could not be fixed at the required height. Some lights were not working, probably because the bulb needed replacing. Couldn’t sit around kitchen table as was too small. Overall problem with damp and mould.
I was very disappointed to arrive at a property that was a converted basement, it was damp, smelt like damp, the shower drains were blocked and could only access the ensuite which was full of mould behind the handles of the bath which I had to clean myself because it all kept coming out the shower and flaking in the bath. The noise was horrendous upstairs the noise sounded like they were in the same room behind a locked door was their home. We came to find if you use the hob too long it kills the switch so were left with uncooked food and had to eat out everyday instead. They expect you to strip all the beds, towels and bag them all up when your struggling for time to leave to catch the ferry which isn't helpful but yet have to pay for cleaners that we never saw the whole time being there.

Old Shanklin Apartment
Overall the property was very comfortable and well presented, except for: no clothes drying facilities; for a property advertised for 6 people the only dining table would only seat 4; we were forced to pay £22 to park in the public car park as for several days after our arrival one of the promised spaces was not available - we feel this extra cost should be refunded; there was no welcome pack as promised. In addition, the VRBO website was unavailable when we should have had access to the key box code and final arrival/departure details. THIS REVIEW/COMMENTS STANDS. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are glad that you found the apartment comfortable.
There are 4 car parking spaces on the property. If the cars were parked efficiently there would be enough room. At some point you started parking your cars in tandem, which was the first time we were aware that you had 2 cars. If you had made us aware of the problem we could have easily rectified it. You could have messaged us on Vrbo, text us or phoned us on the number given in the folder in the apartment or even visited us in the shop, which you did on your way home to spend your vouchers. You could have also asked for a clothes dryer, as we take all of these points on board and will provide reasonable items on request.
The welcome folder is still present tin the apartment. If you mean a welcome HAMPER, you were given vouchers instead for our shop. We may review this next year and go back to the items left on arrival. We just felt that people might like to buy some local produce of their choice, as you did.

Apartment in Great Location
Couldn't fault the location of this Apartment. We stayed here with friends 4 Adults 2 teenagers and loved the proximity, close to all the Shops Pubs and lovely easy walk to the Beach.
The Apartment itself could have been cleaner ..lots of Dust and cobwebs and wardrobes in kids room smelt awful so we didnt use them.
The shower room flooded on one occasion but no mop and bucket so had to use the towels to clean up and the Towel rail in there needs replacing as all the coating is coming off and wouldnt want to put anything on it. We couldn't all eat together as table only seats 4 but we managed and the outside area needs lighting...couldn't see very well when coming home late and was worried of slipping on decking when wet.
The accommodation wasn't the best we have stayed in but for what we paid the proximity made up for it and we've had a fab time and loved Shanklin.

September holiday
Good points: Excellent location, restaurants, pubs, bus stops, shops and beach all near by. A very quiet road. Three good sized bedrooms. Good quality linen and towels. Two good showers with copious amounts of hot water. Plenty of off road parking. Not so good: The apartment suffers a major damp problem, as mentioned in the information. Luckily, we had warm weather with just one wet day. The flat smells musty, even when windows and door left open for fresh air, plus the continual use of a dehumidifier, which we emptied twice. We were out all day and did no cooking. The outside space has been left to deteriorate and looks in a really poor state. It’s a shame because obviously when this apartment was renovated and redesigned a lot of thought and care was involved. We wouldn’t choose to stay again.

Hi Ian,
Thank you for your review. The apartment was renovated 2 years ago. The carpets are still looking brand new and the decor is still fresh. There are a couple of areas which at the end of this season have needed touching up - the lounge ceiling from a leaked fridge upstairs and some areas around the outside of the shower room. The apartment is in the lower ground floor (garden floor) which is partly underground where the kitchen and 1 wall of the 3rd bedroom. It does not smell of damp. It is a Victorian flat and if you're not used to that it may seem different.
The outside furniture definitely needs cleaning and tidying. It has rained constantly this summer. There have been very few dry days.
You messaged us before your arrival to ask about the previous reviews, as you were paying over £1000. We informed you about the dehumidifier. It is common courtesy that we ask you to look after the property while you are in it, so yes you had to empty clean water out of the dehumidifier. Also, you had booked a 3 bedroom flat, which sleeps 6 people. It is your choice to book through an agent and rent a much larger property than you needed.
It is available in other ways. Which is probably next year where we will offer the cheaper ferries, not through here and free hampers. If more people investigated further before booking we all wouldn't be paying these high fees.
But at least you didn't say it wasn't clean.

Great location but room for improvement on cleanliness
Great location in the heart of Shanklin village (and five minutes from beach) and the street was nice and peaceful. The apartment offers plenty of space as well as off-street parking. Access to the apartment was straightforward and the beds were lovely and comfortable.
The apartment unfortunately suffers from damp that gives off a musty smell and is addressed by a dehumidifier. It would have been handy to have had the manual for this to save us time. Kitchen was clean but cleanliness could be improved in the rest of the apartment as there were cobwebs and dust on skirting boards and blinds in bedrooms and bathrooms could do with a deep clean. Sanitary bins were missing from both bathrooms which we found very odd.
When we arrived, there was no travel cot or high chair set up, even though our booking stated that we were travelling with an infant.
However, after some hunting around, we found them in a cupboard and set them up ourselves.

Hi Steven,
Thank you for your review. We take all comments on board. I will speak to our cleaning regarding the points you have made.
We have no record of a request for a cot. I appreciate your booking said you had a 16 month old, but not everyone wants to borrow a cot. Had you let us know or phoned us on arrival we would have happily put it up for you. Some families like to bring their own for familiarity.

Disappointing
This accommodation was very disappointing. The damp is a major issue, the place smells really bad, even though there is a de humidifier we had to empty this every day, sometimes twice, it is that damp. The bedding felt damp when we got into bed the first couple of nights. Cleanliness needs addressing, there were dust and cobwebs around the flat and the windows were dirty. The bathroom towel rails were rusty and the main bathroom one was actually flaking. The main bathroom tap was wobbly. The damp has affected the decor which makes it look unappealing with damp patches on the walls and ceiling. Such a shame as the location is great and the fact it has off street parking is a big bonus. We wouldn't stay again.

Hi Jo,
We always appreciate feedback. We are always at the end of the phone and at the front door of the house for our guests to speak to us when they are actually in the apartment.
We are experiencing a very wet and very humid summer. We do ask that our guests to let some air into the flat when they are here, as many bodies in a sealed unit create moisture. The dehumidifier is there for that reason, but I would find it very unlikely that it would need emptying every single day.
It is a Victorian building, that shouldn't have been double glazed, they weren't meant for it.
I'm unsure how the bedding was damp for the first 2 nights, but not after that. The weather or the humidity didn't improve, whilst you were here. If it was damp it wouldn't have dried out.
We understand completely that bad weather on holiday means that people cannot enjoy the outside space and the BBQ, therefore it seems limiting.
The windows are cleaned regularly, however it's been raining and we live near the sea. Sand, salt, rain.
There are some patches on the lounge ceiling due to our own fridge in our kitchen leaking, which we had to replace, however this has been during the summer season, when there is not enough time to get into the flat to repair it without cancelling someone's holiday.
The decor is exactly the same as the pictures in the description.
I wish we could stop the rain and the humidity. It wasn't like this in the Victorian times when the house was built.
We are doing our best and have many happy returning guests, but obviously you will not be one of them.

Disappointingly poorly maintained property
Positives are the location and the size of the bedrooms and living rooms. The beds are comfortable and the bedding clean. Kitchen is small but well equipped. Negatives outweigh the good though. Firstly there is a damp issue that impacts all rooms even with the dehumidifier running noisily all day. The smell is strong and only alleviated if all windows are left open (we had great weather). The main bathroom suffers from damp issues with a disgusting towel rail which should have been changed months ago. The outside area has been left to deteriorate to the extent that it was unusable unless we were prepared to scrub the furniture down. There are steep steps down to the entrance which are not lit at night and we felt weren’t safe.Communication with the host prior to check in was delayed ( we didn’t get any details until after our paid for stay had started) causing worry as we were travelling a long way to the island. Information had to be chased by phone and message and remained unanswered until the next day. That said when we reported an issue with the shower not draining after the first use the owner responded quickly and attempted to sort it out that day. The shower flooded again though on the next use so it remains unfixed. It’s obvious from older reviews that all these issues are long standing and there has been little, if any, attempts to rectify. This is a shame as with some effort it could be a nice property. We would not stay again and would not recommend

Thank you for your review, however I don't speak French fluently enough to understand everything you have said. We are really sorry that this happened, but it was not our fault.
Basically what the guests (who are English, but live in France) are saying is that they didn't get what they booked. This is absolutely true. They booked through the French branch of Vrbo, which we were not even aware we were advertised on. The details for the property on the other site were of our house that we rented out 6 years ago. Obviously when we changed it to the apartment the Vrbo system or Home Away at the time didn't update the French system, so the guests thought they were getting a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom house for £800 for a week at Christmas. And we couldn't make a whole new listing because the door number was the same. The photos on the French website were correct, so it did clearly show only 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (no en suites) and the kitchen doesn't have 3 ovens or an island.
We cannot even login into the French system, so were unable to change the details on the day when Vrbo asked us to and it wouldn't automatically translate.
When the guests arrived and shouted the problems at us both at the same time I phoned Vrbo straight away and they said to get the guest to contact them to arrange to stay somewhere else. Quite frankly I would rather they had, because we don't want unhappy guests, especially when we can't make the property what it is not. I then messaged the guests before 6am the next morning, as we had to go to work, that they could contact Vrbo and move to alternate accommodation. They said they didn't want to. They came into our shop very jolly and said they were emotional when we saw them. There were 4 of them, so would still fit in the 3 bedrooms and what we had done to the apartment was really nice.
4 days later I had an email from Vrbo saying that the guests had left after 1 night, they weren't happy and wanted a refund. They hadn't because I had just seen them going out for a walk.
No one at Vrbo had done anything about the 'technical issue' and nothing had been recorded, despite there being messages to and from the guests on their system and an email from me to Vrbo as well as a 45 minute phone call.
It then took another week for the French system to be corrected. Vrbo wanted me to translate it to French! In the end I think they copied and pasted it and I still don't have any login ability.
The guests stayed for the whole week and Vrbo decided that they shouldn't get a refund. We were never asked and I have not heard from the guests since.
I completely understand that they were disappointed, but surely must have thought it strange that the photos didn't match the number of rooms or any description of the rooms and the price was extremely cheap. The description was also 2 different things. The first part said 4 bedroom 4 bathroom, then straight underneath said 3 bedroom 2 bathroom.
We truly care about making sure guests know what they are booking. We point out the head height and anything we think might be inconvenient or unsuitable for people. And we gave these guests an opportunity to go elsewhere. If they had then we wouldn't have been paid.
This does explain however why this is the first booking we ever had from the French version of the site.
Great location. So close to shops, pubs and beach. Plenty of space in the accomodation for our party of 3 adults and 2 children. Beds were comfortable. Would be useful to have access to a dust pan and brush or something to enable us to clean up when the kids inevitably drop their cereal on the floor.
Just spent a very enjoyable few days with friends in Old Shanklin Guest House. Perfect place to stay with a group. Big bedrooms with comfy beds and lovely en suites, well-equipped kitchen, great location within walking distance of all the attractions and amenities of Old Shanklin, close to the seafront and coastal walks. Would highly recommend it.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah & Gareth
After having run the house as a guest house for 10 years we opened a deli in Shanklin in 2019 and found that we couldn't do both, so in 2021 we converted the garden floor of our house into a separate apartment.
Why they chose this property
With the central location you can get to anywhere on the Island in no more than 30 minutes. Shanklin is a lovely bustling little village and town. It has everything! It's a village, a town, a seafront, all with a lovely friendly atmosphere. It has a Chine, a Pipeline Under The Ocean, a rock shop, an amazing beach, walks galore for all abilities, cycle tracks, water sports. And if you're staying for a bit Shanklin is a fantastically functional town, where you can buy just about everything.
What makes this property unique
The apartment is very private and quiet with a lovely big decked garden with BBQ area. Hampers and platters with IOW Products and Continental goodies can be provided with a little notice or you can buy them from It's About Thyme in Shanklin.
