Why David Roche chose Otranto
We both love Italy and wanted to find somewhere with great sunshine and authenticity and so investigated Puglia. Having travelled all over, we felt that Otranto had the best mixture of stunning sea, a beautiful historic centre, great restaurants and all year round activity. It is also a perfect base for exploring the region and wonderful towns such as Ostuni, Lecce, Gallipolli etc are all within easy reach. The food and wine in Puglia, and particularly the fish and seafood in Otranto, are fabulous. Our apartment was unique in being in the right part of town, being on the top floor and having direct access to extensive terraces that didn't just look out over other roof terraces. In addition the private garage underneath the property was a real bonus.
What makes this Apartment unique
We fell in love with our apartment initially because of the fantastic terraces. The weather between Easter and October means that you want to spend as much time outside as possible and having such a large terrace directly off the kitchen was very unusual. We have invested in a solid, wooden, permanent awning with floodlighting to enhance al fresco dining in all weathers. Steps from this terrace lead straight to a private roof terrace that has a 270 degree view over fields and to the chiesi dei martiri. The apartment is modern, comfortable and easy to maintain. It is in the quieter (and more older and civilised) residential part of the city and is only a couple of minutes walk from the castle and the historic city centre. This is where the majority of shops, restaurants and bars are located, and the town seafront. Everyone comes there to stroll and have a cafe or gelato in late afternoon. We also have a local supermarket and fantastic pisceria (wet fish shop) within a minute's walk of the apartment.

Splendid extension of Summer
Very nice location, excellent places to explore
Otranto apartment is a clean, functional apartment in Otranto. Rent a small car as the parking garage is a tight squeeze! Check in process was easy and David was very responsive to our questions. The apartment is close to a grocery store and a 10 minute walk to the beach. The street itself is not scenic but there is a view from the terrace of the forested area beyond apartment.
Gem of Southern Italy
Thanks David for the use of your apartment over the last two week which gavels the chance to discover Otranto which was a real tonic and almost an education how nice towns can be, a lesson to destroyed local economies in the UK.
The apartment made everything needed to make the holiday completely enjoyable and the detailed local instructions were such a help.
The place is a cool retreat from the lovely but relentless heat outside - everything worked which is such a pleasant thing.
Thank you and we will definitely come again.
Thanks Simon, so glad you enjoyed it and had a good time. It’s a great spot and a secret gem which means not many Brits at all! Safe travels home, David
Perfect location near to historic center
Very convenient and pleasant apartment. Essential to have the garage since in Otranto all parking is pay parking even along the streets, and even then there are never any free spaces! Beautiful sandy beaches about 20 min away but if you don't mind strong wind and waves, you can also brave those in the center of town. The terrace is nice but we weren't too lucky with the weather so we didn't really get to enjoy it. Otranto is rather expensive as far as restaurants go, at least compared to our experience and to other southern cities during this vacation, such as Bari, Trani, Lecce. Owner's instructions were meticulous and very useful but he forgot to say, turn on the fridge using the switch in the kitchen! Manager was very kind and helpful, carrying our suitcase up the stairs.
Thanks so much Nancy. Have added the fridge switch to the information pack and it will be on when guests arrive in future!
Convenient otrantro apartment
We had a very nice week in this well equipped apartment which is minutes
from shops restaurants & the beach .
The apartment had a large roof terrace with views over a green field & an area outside the kitchen with table & chairs .
We found David Roche the owner very prompt in answering any queries & a very nice lady agent in Otranto to greet us & show us over .
Otranto is a lovely area which we enjoyed very much .
Ottimo soggiorno in Otranto
Thank you Carlo, you are right, the terraces are the perfect place to enjoy the Salento sun, food and wine. I guess you could sleep there as well but recommend the air conditioned bedrooms - we have certainly had many a delicious siesta rest lying on the sun beds on the terraces! It's also nice to know that our description of the apartment and the pages here on HomeAway.co.uk accurately reflect what you experience when you arrive in Otranto. Delighted that you enjoyed your holiday in Otranto in our apartment and thank you for your comments.
Otranto is an historic, walled city with a lovely castle & cathedral and stunning seafront. Pretty, car-free lanes wind through the compact town and are packed with fantastic restaurants & bars. The town has beautiful beaches and the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
Otranto is the perfect base to explore Salento and its beaches. Highlights include the beautiful coastal road around Otranto, often likened to the Amalfi coast; Lecce (‘Florence of the South’) is 30 mins drive away; Gallipoli, Ostuni and Alberobello are nearby, as are Galatone & Galatina, and Porto Cesarea.
Puglia is unspoilt Italy and is legendary for its food & wine, thanks to its year round sunshine and clear blue waters. The olives, fish and both red/white vino are fabulous and an integral part of any holiday in Puglia. The weather is warm throughout the year and Jul/Aug are full of festivals & music that celebrate this wonderful town.
