We loved our stay at camp my own! Such a cute and cozy place and perfect for my husband and two dogs. We brought our boat and did a lot of fishing. Lots of small mouth! The place is amazing being right on the water and we loved hanging on the dock. Such a special spot !

Great location

We had a great stay, the cabin is older and outdated, but gave a warm cozy feeling. The bathroom is detached in a shed, but all functioned as it should. Would definitely recommend.

Great Sunrises!

I went with a girlfriend and my Jack Russell Terriers. We loved the Sunrise from the deck every morning. We loved everything about the deck. Pine needles do come down fast all day long but there is a leaf blower to clean them off which was very much appreciated. We spend most of our time between the dock, deck and front porch. We stayed a week and hope to come back again.

wonderful and happy

We loved the homey feel....the beautiful views....the lake....and the peacefulness of it all. We had such a good time over the last 4 days. It felt like staying at a family's house that we had visited many times over even though we had never been there before. It's not fancy and that was perfect for us. I really will miss it! Even going out to the shed to the bathroom! I hope we can go back again next year.

Bit Deceptive

Upon my arrival it took me over an hour to gain access to the property as the host provided the incorrect keylock combination and was unreachable for sometime, through multiple forms of communication. Entering the cabin I was met with a large pile of sawdust in the middle of the carpet, which the owner told me to vacuum up. There was also a damaged lamp, the shade was torn almost completely in half. There was trash in the barrels in the kitchen and the bathroom. Which by the way is not even located in the cabin. It is located in a shed next to the dirt driveway. The amenities list a washer and dryer, the washer would not spin out the laundry and the dryer would not get hot. In the shower we discovered a very nice men's razor along with soap and shampoo, which we disposed of. It was abundantly clear that the previous guest did not clean up after themselves nor had any kind of property management been by to even inspect the cabin. I say this confidently as there was $20 on the table, I presume from the previous guests use of fire wood. Halfway through my stay the Wi-Fi stopped working, even after attempting to reset the router, we were with out it and any form of cell service for the remainder of our stay. There is one full size bed, a day bed on the screen porch and a pull out couch. There is not a bedroom but a bed behind a curtain. The lake is beautiful.

I am sincerely sorry your stay was not met with satisfaction. When you notified me of dust on the floor, you asked where the vacuum was. If this created a problem I wish you had informed me as I would have had someone come correct any problems found. All amenities and sleeping accommodations are clearly described in the listing… and the price is reflective of the open camp layout. Wifi works 100% unless there is a storm or you knock the outlet where it’s plugged in…and inadvertently shut it off. If you had messaged me, I could have advised you of this. I will attend to washer/dryer feedback immediately - again, if you had informed me I would have corrected it. I suspect your disgruntled feedback is due to the damaged oven, screen door and broken refrigerator drawer - which happened during your stay which resulted in me having to file a claim for… to get repaired. I hope readers of this review will take into consideration the 5 star reviews the majority of renters have provided.

As the sunrise picture shows, there are some very nice attributes to the camp. A little more description about the camp being what one would and ought to expect for 1950s and 1960s would be helpful. Visitors over age 70 would be advised to understand the primitive nature of the camp and access will lead to some additional challenges; From parking and movement within an extremely narrow driveway with obvious property constraints. The camp is in need of additional maintenance on several fronts. When maintenance is performed, such as that beautiful deck shown to the left, it is done professionally. Some fixtures such as the rusted "sofa" on the deck with no mattress and exposed springs should be removed. Outdoor grill sparker was non-functional, so we didn't try to use it at all out of caution. Believe me when I say I'm trying to be balanced with the review. My family had a camp on this lake for decades. I'm a vigorous, independent DIY'er for my homes; we know how expensive it can be to maintain camps, and my grandmother's experiences to get hers were similar to the original owner of this place. During our time in Maine, we had relatives come in from out of state who rented another property on the lake a short distance up-lake. There was a world of difference; and we both paid about the same price! They hosted family gatherings! In the opinion of this reviewer, this property in present condition is significantly over-priced, all things considered. If you like primitive (and I do; I backpack and take my family tent camping in the Pacific NW every year) you'll be fine, but paying a premium price for the experience in comparison to other alternatives in the area. Bring your sleeping bag and pillow. Support staff and owner were courteous and helpful throughout renting process and closeout, inclusive of prompt refund of deposits. That service is always appreciated. In sum, thank you. WJF.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry you did not realize this is a very "campy" property and one step up from camping, as detailed in my descriptions. I will review my property details and update accordingly. The property description and welcome letter on the refrigerator directed renters to the cushions for the deck furniture. Again, sorry you did not see the cushions for the deck glider stored inside on the glassed in porch, as that glider is so comfortable to swing on while napping on the deck, but obviously not very comfortable if you did not see the cushions that need to be on it first. The exposed springs would be a torture chamber and unsightly. Never had a complaint about price before, and if you read the reviews, most renters felt it was a bargain. I will do some comparison to be sure it is a fair value. Again, thanks for the feedback. I want this to be a place that creates positive memories for all that I share my family cottage with...and will do what I can to improve based on your feecback. Happy and safe travels.

Not for us

To start it is a step up from camping but i’d rather go camping. My wife and I have rented MANY properties throughout Maine so we have comparisons. My number one problem is I don’t think anyone checks the property after visitors have left. Case in point we went get the cushions so we could relax but the bin they were stored in is not water proof and the cushions were wet, a couple didn’t dry till Thursday. A soaking wet dishcloth on the counter, garbage not brought out to the curb on Tuesday, three bags in the can. The vacuum cleaner and sweeper FILLED with dirt and hair. You are supposed to clean before you leave but the mop still had packaging on it so how did the previous people mop? The owners are not inspecting what they expect. The furniture was worn which is one thing but terribly dirty! As far as six people, good luck. Oh, and it is NOT safe for young children and the electrical outlets are overloaded, a serious hazard. OVER PRICED! With that said it is a BEATIFUL spot! Great swimming

Response from VrboOwner on 3 June 2024
Dear Tom, First, I am sorry your experience was not a positive one. I know vacation time is an investment and it is important to get the value you pay for. For the benefit of future renters: This property is inspected between renters by a local property manager… that said… this one time must have been missed IF this renter found trash in the trash can and a wet dish rag on the counter. There are three mops on the property, so one mop being unused/brand new is not an indication the floors were not cleaned. Furniture dirty? Indoor or outdoor? hmmmm. Yes - the pine tree above the deck does drop pine needles daily… and there is a leaf blower to make clearing off the deck and furniture quick and easy. The camp is small and the description details 2 twin beds, 1 full size bed on lakeside and 1 full size futon. (it is now a pull-out sofa) Many renters have comfortably slept six, as they read the description and knew what to expect. As you can see, since 2016 this property has received rave reviews (9.8) and the majority of my guests are return renters. So I hope future renters take the time to read all reviews… as is the case here…some guests just look for something to complain about instead of enjoying life. Those people would not enjoy this property as it is a true Vintage Camp with quirks - that most find charming. And yes…the electrical is old time and we’ve had no problems over the years. It’s a camp, not a resort. Small children will need 24/7 supervision… it is not a safe place to expect your children to go unsupervised. You will have to spend time together… perhaps playing a game from the stocked closet, watching a movie from the 100 plus movie collection.. or even spinning stories on the lakeside deck which sits right on the water. Don’t let them wonder alone… again, this is Camp…not Club Med. Overpriced? You will find nothing on the water as inexpensive as this - my camp is intentionally underpriced (if you want to be in the woods - yes… you MIGHT find a lower price). So, Enjoy your future travels and come back once you realize the great value you had under appreciated: fully stocked kitchen, weber grill on the deck enjoying the lake while grilling, walking thru the camp door to sit on the cushioned furniture in your PJ’s coffee in hand and enjoy lakeside living, the fire pit under the milky way…and all the comforts needed the enjoy simple living with your family and loved ones. Great cabin right on the lake

We had a great time. Loved being able to bring the pets on vacation with us. Beautiful spot right on the water. We had a little trouble with bees flying around the deck area. When we would eat outside they would start coming around. Note to people who bring dogs who like to swim- there is no easy access in and out of the water except for climbing on rocks, which made our dogs nails bleed a bit. Didn’t seem to bother the dogs though. There is a grocery store about 20 minutes away which was very convenient. We cooked on the grill every night and had s’mores by the campfire. We’ll be back again!

Perfect Rustic Hideaway

a perfect rustic little cabin on an idyllic lake! We had a wonderful time... the cabin is exactly as it is described... 2 steps up from camping with everything you could ever need. Perfect spots to sit and watch the ever changing moods of this quiet lake. We were early in the season so appreciated the closed in porch for warmth, but also the deck, the dock, the firepit. Nothing like waking up to a picture perfect sunrise in bed! Patti is so responsive and helpful, all the information was clear. A great experience!

Three in a row

This is our third summer in a row at "Camp My Own". Every year just gets better. This year made it special thanks to pat making a week available for our family. With all the nonsense this year has brought.. and spending less time with family... this week together brought us closer than ever... Thanks so much pat again... hope to talk next year. Kim & Terry

About the host

Hosted by Patti Theall

Host profile image
I was born in Milo Maine, just a few miles from Schoodic Lake. Because both of my parents were born here, I was blessed to have spent summers on the lake, as did my children. We moved away when I was 3, to southern NH, but my mother purchased this vintage cabin so we could continue to make memories with be Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, cousins and childhood friends. I host, to help others make memories of their own, as proven by my many repeat renters who return year after year.

Why they chose this property

While sitting on the lakeside deck, you see no other camps, just the 8x4 mile lake, views of Mount Katahdin on a clear day, and the sound of loon.

What makes this property unique

This vintage cabin takes you back to a simpler, less stressful time, where close quarters builds intimacy and we are reminded of the healing power of nature.
