Rustic Waterfront Retreat With Private Dock, 2 kayaks & canoe. Air conditioner!
This A-frame cottage has private waterfront access with two single kayaks and a canoe. A new 12,000 btu air conditoner keeps much of the main floor cool in summer. When the crisp Fall temperatures hit, the house has a proper forced hot air heating system w/ heat registers in the floors and a touchscreen thermostat on the wall, across from the bathroom. You have a master bedroom downstairs with a full sized bed, an upstairs bedroom with 2 twin beds and a loft area upstairs that has a pull out futon bed. There is 1 bathroom with a shower and a large living area with a futon that can sleep more people. A deck provides a beautiful view of the woods and the waterfront. The kitchen is equipped with a stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and utensils. (Please Note: There is no dishwasher, garbage disposal or washer/dryer. And due to allergies in the family, we do not allow pets at the A-Frame.) Our home has been rented in the summer to Tanglewood musicians for the last 20 years without interruption. The main floor is carpeted and the loft and bedroom upstairs have throw rugs.
(Please note that the propane fireplace in the main room is decorative only - due to insurance regulations. The 12,000 btu air conditioner and plenty of fans keeps your summer time cool. The central forced hot air heating system keeps the house quite comfortable in the Spring and Fall)
If you are into Yoga, you may know that world renowned Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health is 10 minutes by car and a half hour canoe ride from the cottage. Yes, you can actually canoe/kayak to Kripalu from the cottage. It is an amazing experience!

We had a wonderful long weekend at the “A-frame”. It’s a unique cabin with a great view. Its very close to the surrounding towns while having a feeling of being away from it all at the same time. It has everything you need for a comfy stay and our host Tim was very attentive and welcoming. Highly recommend!

Thank you Roy! So glad you chose the A-Frame and had a great stay in the Berkshires! Come back again anytime!
My only negative comments are that the access to the house from the road is rutted and unpaved. While we watched our steps carefully it should be made clear in the listing this property would not work for folks with balance or mobility issues.
The sole bathroom was likely described in the listing( and it went over my head) but the stairs to the loft are steep so middle of the night bathroom needs are tough.
The only suggestion would be to have a measuring cup to help with cooking
The house was very clean and well stocked. A lovely addition I was the bottle of wine and cookies that were there for us. Close to wonderful hikes and using the kayaks to paddle on the Stockbridge Bowl was lovely!
We were delighted to spend a two night getaway here in the A Frame. The owners were thoughtful in leaving us cookies and wine as well as plenty of bottled drinking water due to mineral taste of tap water. The house was labeled to help us find info and needed items. Most of all the beauty of the setting was literally framed in the huge windows. A truly wonderful getaway in an area of natural beauty and rich cultural attractions.
We spent the week undoing the burnout and exploring our minds in the vantablack silence. A peaceful and a much needed experience for city dwellers. Our favorite part, was taking the canoe out and enjoying the basin.
This is a great place! In fact, I don’t want too many people to find out about it because we hope to return! It’s a simple A-Frame home that served us as a base for activities in the area. The location is ideal for doing things in many nearby towns. We hiked a bit of the Appalachian Trail in October Mountain State Forest. We went up to Laura Lookout Tower, accessed from the town of Stockbridge. We walked up a ski hill at Ski Butternut in Great Barrington and enjoyed the quiet of just a few other people being there. We also went to a Farmers’ Market in the town of Lee and enjoyed yummy outdoor dining in Lenox. Stockbridge Bowl is also a gorgeous lake to explore! We canoed all around, checking out the houses we could see from the water. The kids had fun building with sticks in the woods and swinging on the board swing under the house. The kitchen had everything we needed, and the house stayed plenty warm for our mid-October visit. The home also has a great table for family meals and games, plus enough couch seating for watching a movie together in the evening. The beds were good, and plenty of linens and blankets were available. The owner was also accessible and responsive to messages, though no problems arose during our stay (just had questions about activities in the area).
The location of this place is excellent. The canoe and kayaks are such a great amenity. Explore Stockbridge Bowl and all the beauty Stockbridge and the surrounding areas have to offer. Tim was super responsive and really helpful. Our only regret was not staying longer; time went by so quickly.
We had the best time at the A-frame. It’s a gorgeous spot and had everything we need. Tim was easy to communicate with and everyone had fun (ages 7-80!).
We had a wonderful time staying here. The property was very clean and well kept. It is great having a full kitchen and living room. The water access was incredible and the area is just incredibly beautiful. We were so close to so many different hiking trails and fun farmstands.
This A-Frame was immaculately clean. The property is terrific. The view of the lake from the deck is as soothing as it is stunning. We had a terrific stay and we'll do it again in a heartbeat.
We LOVED the A-Frame! It's adorable. The location is fabulous. Very quiet location, right on the lake. Had a great time kayaking and visiting the neighboring towns. (The only drawback was the 'hard water' which had a funny scent and taste. But the owners were sweet enough to leave a couple of cases of bottled water for us.) Beautiful place, great location! Owner is super responsive.
Enjoyed our stay, and all went smoothly. My only complaint is the excessive $200 cleaning fee ,as we left the place totally tidy & cleaner than we found it.

Hi James - Thank you for getting back to my offline email about how the VRBO pricing doesn't always show the cost breakdowns without clicking further into the reservation record. (The A-Frame cleaning fee was $125, which is immediately passed to Kathryn, our local caretaker. VRBO then separately layers on "traveler fees" (for booking via their website) and taxes that go straight to VRBO, not to the property owner. It would certainly be frustrating to think all of those additional charges were cleaning related!) Thank you for leaving everything wonderfully clean, tidy and in great shape! Much appreciated. We're glad you had a fun stay at the A-Frame! Thank you, Tim

The A frame was wonderful. Perfect location, clean and cozy.
Check-in and check-out were straightforward and convenient. The kitchen well-equipped and clean, the living area cozy with a wonderful view on the water. We stayed here with our 2 daughters who are already planning to return for more canoeing on the lake!

Berkshire Rental
We really enjoyed our weekend away and loved the quaint A-frame. My daughters had said they always wanted to stay in this type of house, and now they have! Tim was informative and responsive making the whole rental easy. There were also little extras like bottled water and wine in the fridge which were so considerate! Hope to come back next year!

A lovely house, - better than pictures! Would highly recommend to anyone!
Thank you Tim,
He was a great host, responded to all my questions very quickly. We had an amazing weekend in the Berkshires. The house is so pleasant, then it's hard to get out in the morning! The room upstairs with two bed is much more spacious than the photos show. The leaving room is amazing, and the kitchen has everything you need. There's a huge balcony facing the river - can easily spend a lazy afternoon sitting there and reading, while enjoying the peace and nature. We loved the canoe and canoed to a nearby lake - what an enjoyable experience!!! :) We'll try to come back next year!:):):)

About the host
Hosted by Tim Kaul
Tim and Dave Kaul are brothers who own the A-frame that was built by their father in 1971. The Kaul family has enjoyed skiing at Jiminy Peak, Butternut, Catamount, and Bousquet Ski areas since they were 6 years old and always enjoyed eating spaghetti with their parents after a fun day on the slopes. Now, Tim's 2 boys (ages 10 & 13) enjoy skiing at the same ski areas and living in the cottage just as Tim and Dave did a generation before.
Why they chose this property
Our cottage is a wonderful place to be no matter the season as there is a lot going on in the Berkshires, an art and recreational mecca.
If you come in October, you can see the beauty of the leaves turning orange.
For artists and patrons of the arts, the Norman Rockwell Museum is 15 minutes away in downtown Stockbridge and MASS MoCA, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, is less than an hour away.
What makes this property unique
A fantastic feature that really makes the cottage wonderful is the private dock with a canoe. Stockbridge Bowl has access to Kripalu, the Yoga and Health center.
