Southmead Cottage is a recently totally renovated property in the stunning hamlet of Lettaford. This medieval hamlet is made up of just 5 properties which sits in the heart of Dartmoor. Southmead Cottage adjoins Southmead Farmhouse. The Property has 3 bedrooms and has been refurbished to a very high standard throughout. The cottage sits on a bridle path which takes you directly onto the High Moor so is perfect for those who enjoy donning their walking boots and forgetting their car for their stay. It sits directly on the Mariner’s Way, a beautiful walk that takes one from North to South Devon coasts. For provisions, restaurants and excellent shopping, it sits between the 2 lovely towns of Chagford and Moretonhampstead . Children can be delighted with The Miniature Pony Centre just a mile away and for a little spa or restaurant luxury, Bovey Castle is 1 1/2 miles away. The cottage itself has 3 bedrooms , 2x doubles( well super king and king!) and a smaller room which has 2x bunk beds (adult size). There is a full bathroom downstairs and an ensuite for the upstairs. There is WiFi throughout the cottage (bearing in mind it is rural Dartmoor so the speed is sometimes interrupted) and there is a television in the kitchen, upstairs and downstairs larger bedrooms. We have 2x cotbeds and a high chair for those visiting with small children. There is a washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, fridge and separate freezer and a well equipped kitchen. The cottage has a small courtyard garden which can be accessed through a door in the downstairs bedroom as well as the kitchen. We will consider well behaved dogs as long as they stay downstairs and not on the furniture! We have a FRIDAY changeover. We have always said we would want to make a holiday cottage one that we would want to visit and this is certainly it! We look forward to welcoming you.

Simon and Sally and Monty were the most fantastic hosts and really looked after us. The cottage was spotless and looked even better than all the photos. Wonderful walks from the front door, wild swimming close by , and our dog loved it all too. Can’t thank them enough
We stayed in this wonderful cottage on the very edge of Dartmoor for about three weeks at the beginning of summer. A bridleway passes by the front door that takes you straight out into Dartmoor with endless hiking options. Another trail takes you over Maldon Hill to Chagford. Moretonhampstead is close by car for groceries and Exeter is only 45 minutes away. I recommend the Ordnance Survey Explorer map for Dartmoor. The paper map comes with a digital download for your phone.
The quality of the beds is very important to us due to a bad back. The beds were very good. The cottage was fully equipped with everything we needed. There was plenty of space and very homey.
When the bandwidth did not stream Netflix, we binged 4 seasons of Friends from the large collection of DVDs. Our O2 mobile phone did not work well in the area. We hiked to Chagford for breakfast at Folklore to catch up on text messages.
Dog friendly! The cottage is dog friendly and the whole area is dog friendly. You can bring your dogs to almost all pubs and restaurants, and people do.
I highly recommend this beautiful property for a short or long stay.
Thank you Sally and Simon!
I loved this place, it was spotless. There has been much thought put into this place, it really has everything you need. It is very tasteful and the location is perfect for some peace and quiet. The only downside is the internet WiFi is a little unreliable. But otherwise a perfect place to stay :)
An extremely comfortable and well equipped cottage well placed for discovering walks on the Moor. The villages nearby catered for all our needs. Simon and Sally were very welcoming and helpful and we certainly would book this cottage again.
Southmead Cottage was everything we had hoped for, and in a perfect, wonderfully quiet Dartmoor location. Great for walks and touring the Higher Moor. We enjoyed every moment.
Excellent property for a family holiday with plenty of room for a group of 2 grandparents, parents and 2 children under 12. Kitchen well equipped for catering for family meals, cottage is quite remote down narrow lane so ate in most evenings. Lovely evening walks on your doorstep and well located for day trips to lots of tourist attractions in Dartmoor. Friendly owners live next door and offer quick response if needed. Overall clean and comfortable accommodation which we can recommend to anyone wanting a quiet peaceful break in beautiful surroundings.
We enjoyed a week exploring South Devon. The accommodation is lovely and had everything we needed. A 5 minute walk takes you to the moors and within a 40 minute drive you could be at the coast. The house was spotlessly clean and well equipped. Sally-Anne was a lovely host and we enjoyed the the welcome pack on arrival which was left for us. We would highly recommend this property.
Great stay in Devon. Highlights included extremely comfortable beds/pillows (often overlooked in a holiday cottage). Great cooking facilities and lounge to relax in. It felt very homely. Hosts were there for anything we needed and really lovely to chat too. The kids loved seeing the dogs over the fence. Thanks we hope to come again soon.
This cottage is beautiful, with all we needed. Comfy beds great kitchen etc made our stay work for us. Lots of gorgeous touches everywhere from the furnishings to pillows. I’d recommend to those seeking a quiet retreat. Ideal for runners / walkers with a bridle path outside the door taking you up onto Exmoor. WiFi had its moments as very rural so consider that if looking to take techy kids.
Host was delightful. Lots in local area - particularly enjoyed a meal or two at The White Hart in Morwtonhampstead.
Wonderful week in an idyllic spot - we’ve already booked to come back
We have just got back from a perfect week in Dartmoor. Admittedly we were helped but the amazing weather, but I think we’d have enjoyed this place even with rain. The location is pretty perfect - walking on the doorstep and a lovely stream running through the hamlet which our dog loved.
The house was fantastic - it had everything we needed and we were extremely comfortable. Having Sally and Simon next door was a bonus - they have perfected the balance of being friendly and helpful while staying unobtrusive. In fact everything worked so well that we’ve booked a return trip next year.
Highly recommended.
We had a fabulous week at Southmead Cottage. Everything was spotlessly clean, the kitchen very well equipped and we really appreciated the luxurious touches including White Company bedding and towels. The cottage is in a beautiful location, a few minutes walk away from the moor.
A beautiful cottage in wonderful countryside equipped with everything you could need for a self catering holiday ! The photos do not do it justice ! Fabulous hosts and although next door are not intrusive but on hand to welcome and help with any queries you may have . What a welcome ..... a nice bottle of wine, a crusty loaf and fresh eggs , just what the doctor ordered after a long journey !
I thoroughly recommend this beautifully and thoughtfully finished cottage for its stunning location right on Dartmoor, but not too far from the coast and other attractions.
A truly wonderful experience!
This was probably the best place I've ever stayed in during a holiday. The photos on this site don't give it justice - it's even more beautiful in reality. So lovely decorated in every single detail, fitting so well in the Dartmoor setting but still so comfortably furbished. Just minutes from breathtaking views. Sally-Anne was wonderful host, too. We crave to come back soon!

Lovely character cottage with all modern appliances
Had a wonderful stay in this very beautiful cottage that had all the appliances you needed, great location for a chilled Easter break and lots of walking. Owners live next door and are a lovely family, there if you needed them for anything, which we didn’t as we had everything, but nice to chat when we did see them. Would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone wanting a lovely quiet break in Dartmoor, and yes you can definitely walk straight out of the door and up to the moor and down to a lovely little stream. We were a party of 4, we love cooking and the kitchen which was a good size and well laid out had everything you needed including a Yorkshire tin for Yorkshire puddings and Sunday roast - I was impressed being a Yorkshire lass. We would definitely return for a stay and highly recommend this cottage.

A beautiful cottage retreat in a magical setting
We spent Christmas in this charming cottage and enjoyed it very much. The cottage is warm and welcoming, beautifully appointed, very well-equipped, spotlessly clean and comfortable. We all felt instantly at home - including Teddy the dog, who was a very happy lad, both inside and outside up on the moor. We relished the absolute peace and quiet (no traffic noise!) and darkness at night (no light pollution!). We would recommend this charming place to anyone who truly values nature and tranquility. Sally-Anne is very accommodating and very pleasant to deal with, thanks to her and all who work to provide all this lovely comfort!
