Originally built as a corn mill in the 15th-century, with a 15 foot water wheel, it also worked as a timber mill and carpenter’s shop, specialising in horse drawn carts. The adjacent Mill Cottage and popular Mill Inn (17th-century) have entertained many famous visitors including poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who in 1803, overturned their cart and stayed overnight as they journeyed to Scotland. Authors, Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins resided in 1857; rock legend Peter Gabriel and former Prime Minister John Major stayed at The Mill when it operated as an award-winning small hotel. The holiday cottage was, at the time, the private residence of the hotel owners. Located at the foot of Souther Fell, The Mill is well placed to see the legendary ghosts of the Roman Army, who were first witnessed marching across the fell on a midsummer’s eve in 1735.
The Mill has been sympathetically renovated to provide contemporary comforts within its heavily beamed traditional interior.
The cot will not be available for parties of 4 as there would be no room for the cot in the twin room.
There is open water in the property grounds.

I absolutely loved my Christmas break at The Mill, with all it's charm.
I absolutely loved my Christmas break at The Mill, with all it's charm. The owners (Chris & Lorraine) created a wonderful atmosphere with the tasteful Christmas decor. The Mill is a great retreat if you are looking for tranquility. The internet isn't great which was a shame as I really needed it to do some work, but that is the only criticism I have of the cottage.
Some fabulous walks straight from the front door.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Mill and would highly recommend it as an excellent base for exploring the beautiful Lake District. The cottage is very well equipped and the hosts' attention to detail is second to none! We particularly appreciated the welcome package complete with wine, milk, freshly laid eggs and a delicious homemade cake. It was also lovely to have the hosts nearby for local knowledge and advice, if required. There are lots of excellent walks from the front door or from the surrounding area and Keswick is a short drive away. A very peaceful setting with all the home comforts you need for a relaxing break.

A little gem of a cottage in a more remote area of the north eastern Lake District.
A little gem of a cottage in a more remote area of the north eastern Lake District. We arrived to find a welcome pack including wine and cake; wonderful touch. We were visiting to fell walk in the area and local amenities were not high on our priority list but we had a pub within yards when we needed it and both Keswick and Penrith were within easy reach.
Chris was the perfect host; around if needed but leaving us to enjoy the peace and quiet of the surroundings. The shower was a challenge for the tallest but always lashings of hot water available after our fell walks. The log fire created a very relaxing atmosphere. We would visit again without a second thought.
