Mixed feelings
We enjoyed the holiday because Thornton le Dale is a delightful village and Shaws Cottage is in an excellent position. The property was obviously quality in its time but it is rather like stepping into a family home from a past era and really should reflect a more modern holiday home. Many reviews all have similar thoughts. I suspect the owner does not see the need to “up grade” because the house will probably “let” regardless, because of its position. However there were some very obvious failings. We were met with 6 very obvious “wee” stains on the living room carpet, with no attempt to clean them. There was also a wet, fungal patch of carpet in the hall at the entrance to the shower room which was long standing and never righted. I would like to think the owner was more interested in giving good/better value for the considerable fees being asked to rent this house!

Perfect location with good amenities around the village.
Perfect location with good amenities around the village. Two lovely pubs to choose from, local shops and cafe. Mathewson auction sale weekends are interesting with classic car passing by. Nice places to walk the dogs. Ideal for day trips to to Whitby and Scarborough. Large property very traditional cottage with plenty of seating. Annex needs extra lighting outside though it very dark outside in the evening. We didn’t experience any bats so this wasn’t a problem. Everything you you need for a stay. You need to talk to the manager before this property is back for rental. Until the bats are relocated this property is unsafe and uninhabitable. The council needs to be informed.

A spacious and we'll equipped cottage in an ideal position for exploring the area.
A spacious and we'll equipped cottage in an ideal position for exploring the area. Two good pubs, local shop, takeaway and lovely bakery all on the doorstep. As a group of 6 adults the 4 bedrooms across the two buildings worked well for us. As it was January we didn't make use of the garden but it would be marvellous in summer with plenty of space to relax or play. The only downside we found was that the large living room took a long time to heat up even with the wood fire in use. Instructions on how to use the aga would helpful for those of us unfamiliar with them but there is a standard cooker in the 2nd kitchen for the uninitiated.
