Gate Cottage is cosy, well appointed and maintained. The location is ideal and the views stunning. We even saw an otter on the shore one evening. Easy walking distance to shops and restaurants.

Good base for exploring
A good cottage with lovely views. Good kitchen with plenty of utensils. Wonderful outside space (although gate not secure for families or dogs). Could do with some repairs being done but still a pleasant place to stay.

Gate cottage in May 2026
Disappointed that reading a review from July 2025 about gates not secure, this issue had not been addressed! We could not let our dog out to run freely in the garden because the garden was insecure, when we tried to close the gates, the whole front fencing wobbled& was very unstable! The owners obviously knew this because one gate was tie wrapped & one tied to a marine buoy!!
The outside of the cottage needed a good lick of paint, bit grubby looking as we pulled up !!! I did need to clean the front patio doors so we could see out!
In addition the shower cubicle was failing to drain, resolved by ourselves unblocking & cleaning the drain.
A welcome pack would have been nice. First cottage we've ever stayed in, that there was literally nothing, not good after a 6 hr journey, bearing in mind the remoteness of the cottage. Thank goodness for the wonderful kames Village Store! Amazing place, could get everything we needed!
On the plus side, fabulous views, lovely interiors to the cottage& a gorgeous garden to enjoy, lovely comfortable bed too& lots of utensils provided.
Kames Hotel a delightful amenity in the village& very friendly people too, food was excellent!
Information book in cottage needs updating too as some places suggested were no longer open!
On the whole a pleasant stay & we would return, only if the garden was made secured!

Family week at Gate Cottage
The cottage is in a beautiful location with fantastic views which you could look at for hours. It was comfortable and the kitchen area was very well equipped although there only seemed to be 5 chairs at the dining table even although there were six of us.The garden was not secure for a dog and this could be solved by fixing the gate. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and hope to return.

Summing up
A well appointed cottage in a beautiful location. Only disappointment was that the main gate needed fixed and this meant that the garden was not secure for our dog to be left in.

Just perfect
We had a lovely stay at Gate cottage. Well equipped with everything you need. We just loved it.
What a beautiful part of Scotland to stay. We managed to see seals on the water not far from the cottage a and loved watching the small boats sailing near by. Would love to go back

Family getaway
Our stay here was lovely, unfortunately we were staying during Storm Agnes so the weather was dreadful. Beautiful cottage, a little out of the way and a long trip down but if you are looking for peace and quite and a beautiful view of Bute and the Kyle of Bute then this is the place to stay. We found the ferries brilliant very quick and much easier ro come via the ferries than all the way down from Loch Lomond. The cottage has everything and was spotless. Would definitely recommend Gate Cottage.

Beautiful location
Gate Cottage is in a beautiful part of Scotland and is a comfortable cottage.
Disappointing that you can't enter the cottage until 5.30pm, unlike all of the other holiday homes we have stayed in which have been around 3-4pm!
No welcome pack either which is very unusual these days!
Gate Cottage is even more lovely than the pictures show - spacious and well decorated, and the setting is very peaceful, with a private side and back yard, and another grassy area across a quiet road that leads down to the rocky beach facing the Isle of Bute. The one thing to be aware of for visitors is that there's only a small (but very well stocked) market and a few restaurants, some only open at weekends, right in Kames, so you'll need to bring in most provisions from a supermarket in Dunoon, about a 45 minute drive away. But the kitchen is well equipped for cooking, and we were very happy to prepare dinner at home after exploring during the day. Overall, a beautiful place that we hope to return to!
Super schönes Cottage mit einem tollen Ausblick. Es war sehr sauber, gemütlich und modern eingerichtet. Die Küche hatte alles was man braucht. Sogar einige Gewürze waren da.

We stayed at Gate Cottage for Christmas 2022 (22nd - 27 Dec)
The Cottage comfortably sleeps 6 and is fully equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge/freezer and all the kitchen equipment needed.
The cottage is lovely and cosy with a log burner (enough logs for our 5 days stay).
The Cottage is in the heart of the beautiful village of Kames, with Kyles of Bute literally on the door step.
A wonderful home from home experience with wonderful surrondings on the lovely Argyll and Bute coastline.

Review of Gate Cottage
beautiful location with stunning views .Cottage is comfortable we made the mistake of not getting milk for when we arrived and as the only shop was closed we had to wait until the morning as it is the only cottage we have ever been to with no welcome pack at all.
We also left a day early as the neighbouring cottage had workmen cutting down the back garden trees and greenery and using a bonfire to burn some of it for 2 days so all windows and doors had to be kept closed

Idyllic
We had a fabulous week at Gate Cottage, only negative as such was we had our two big dogs with us and felt the garden wasn’t as secure as we would have liked. Wasn’t a problem, we just kept the dog on a lead when in the garden, other dog just plods around. Gardens are beautiful and as the weather was lovely we spent time sitting on the bench looking over the water to Bute. Cottage is lovely and it was bliss to sit and look out of the big windows. It certainly a place to chill and clear your head. Found everyone friendly who we met and found the village store well stocked with bits you might need. Overall we loved it.

Lovely stylish relaxing house
We had an excellent stay at gate cottage. The house is very comfortable and well equipped. Beautiful views to the Kyles of Bute from the living rooms and relaxing walks right from the door. The Oystercatcher at Otter Ferry is the best local restaurant in an another amazing setting.
