The living space
High ceilings, wooden floors and original shutters set the style of this period former-rectory. Fully equipped with high quality furnishings, tv and bluray player, wifi access and cooking facilities that enable you to live as you would in your own home.

The cosy lounge is the space that brings family and friends together – stoke the fire, make yourself at home and relax on the sofa.
To catch a movie, head to the snug bar where you will find a bluray player and selection of films, a good book to read or games to play or why not bring your own games console to wire up to the tv for an evening of entertainment.
The bar fridge is ready for you to stock with your supplies for the weekend, you will find ice in your freezer, the rest is over to you, or I can place an order from my local wine merchant for you.

The kitchen/breakfast room is light and airy, the perfect space to fuel yourselves ready for a busy day exploring the county.
With tables big enough to seat you all and a well-equipped kitchen with all the mod cons, including an American fridge freezer, dishwasher, large oven and ceramic hob, you’ll soon whip up a feast.
You can go it alone with regards to food or you may wish to have a helping hand in the form of meals prepared for you to finish or a chef to cook a special dinner in your kitchen; you can relax and let the conversation flow as readily as the wine. With the option to add special extras like a bottle of fizz, homemade cake for the tin in the kitchen, or fresh hand-tied bouquet of flowers we have everything covered for you to make your stay extra special. Please ask for more information.

Washing machine and tumble drier facilities available.

Outside you will find well-kept lawns and a south facing flagstone terrace where you can enjoy alfresco dinning, perhaps a BBQ or a late afternoon sun downer. There is plenty of space for little ones to run around and stretch their legs whilst you relax on the outdoor furniture.
You could make the most of the outdoor space and add a hot tub to your booking, to while away the evenings in a flurry of bubble and steam. (Hot tubs are hired from a local company by yoursleves - please ask us for more information.)

The apartments
We have two one-bedroom apartments, separate to the main house but just as comfortable.
Bulmer duplex apartment and Scudamore ground floor apartment.
The living spaces are made up of a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and lounge, whilst in the bedrooms you will find a luxurious king-size bed and walk-in shower room. Perfect for 2, and a little one if required, these are a great addition to your house booking if you need a little more space. You can choose to add one or both apartments and we can adjust your quote to accommodate these.

Absolutely wonderful
such a special stay...all the luxury of a hotel setting with immaculate decor, ensuite bathrooms, lovely linen and toiletries, so much space - and a bar for just us!! Hosts were on hand but we didn't need a thing as it was all so well thought out in advance. We had the recommended caterers come for a dinner on the weekend and also a yoga class - both recommended. Thank you for the home made cake and the wonderful stay!

Amazing stay for a private party
We hired the house for a weekend stay for a group of 20, 16 adults and 4 young children. We also hired the two apartments that are part of the building with separate access. It was an ideal set up as we could accommodate the whole group with en-suite bathrooms and large communal areas to mingle. We had our own caterers and the owners helpfully assisted them with the entire set up. The owners were very amendable to special requests which made the whole weekend easy for us to enjoy. Both the house and gardens are exceptional with an intimate family feel. Everything was immaculately clean and well maintained. We had agreed with the owners to host our small wedding with private caterers. The event was a massive success, no doubt because of the kindness and hospitality of both Chris and Nadia who run the Priory. We would definitely stay there again and all our guests commented on the homeliness of the house and beauty of the views. For this price point there is nothing comparable. We will definitely look to come back again. Chris and Nadia are wonderful hosts who are a true credit to the hospitality industry.

Care and attention
I booked The Priory on behalf of family members who were visiting for Christmas from other countries. I wasn't able to join them but all the feedback was positive 'amazing', 'magnificent', 'the house was spotlessly clean', 'we had everything we needed', 'it was huge, lots of places to lose yourself' etc. Chris and Nadia were great to deal with and when I made enquiries, nothing was too much trouble. I hope to visit with other family members in the future.

About the host

Hosted by Chris or Nadia

Host profile image
The Priory became a hotel in the 1950’s and has been run by numerous proprietors over the past 70 years.
Chris & Chris Rowbotham took over ownership of The Priory in August 2007 and undertook a massive 6 month refurbishment to bring it up to date.

Now run as a luxury large self-catering house hire (or Bed & Breakfast when we don't have house bookings), by Mrs Chris and daughter Nadia, the Priory has a stylish contemporary décor whilst maintaining a sensitivity to period features.

Why they chose this property

Our house is more than a house, its a home. We put our heart and soul into it on a daily basis and preparing it for our guests is an absolute joy.
We have lived in the area since 2007 and we love what Herefordshire has to offer. There are definitely hidden gems here that are waiting for you to discover them.

Herefordshire is a great middle point for family and friends from North and South to meet. Why not escape the city and breath in the fresh air of the most rural county in England.

What makes this property unique

There is a vast history to our house!
The Priory is a former rectory to the village church of St Mary Magdalene which stood on the site 1150-1877. When the church fell into disrepair, any parts that were salvageable were used to build a new church in the centre of the village of Stretton Sugwas. The house remained as the rectory until 1921, passed through numerous incumbent's, when it became a large family home before being turned into a hotel in the 1950's. The rest, as they say, is history.
There are many period features within the building that we have tried to retain sensitively, whilst making the house feel modern and welcoming.
