Casa Cobre

Thanksgiving 1 week minimum. Normally a 1 month minimum and rates may not be displayed properly on the calendar unless you specify your dates first. Also, ask about long term rates (60+ days). A truly green adobe house built before green was en vogue. This fully furnished home at 6000' altitude provides magnificent views through 4 gentle seasons. The location is just beyond the south edge of the city limits providing convenient access to all the amenities of the town and the isolation of quiet, country living. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the natural lighting in this passive solar home creates a bright living space with full southern views.

This 2 bedroom, 2 bath home was remodeled from a home to a fully furnished rental with a unique and vibrant copper (cobre in Spanish) warmth. The master bedroom has a king bed, two comfy chairs and a small desk. It has a huge master closet and an open, connected bathroom. The second extra large bedroom has two queen beds, two comfy chairs, a dresser, and a small desk. The second bathroom is separate from, but adjacent to, the second bedroom. The living room has a very large and comfortable corner sectional, four comfy chairs and a large fireplace. In its basic configuration, the dining room seats 4, although 10 or more folks have used the space with the expandable table. Additionally, the dining area features a bar counter with stools that face the kitchen. The kitchen is extremely well equipped. The entire private home setting includes three outdoor seating areas with views of distant mountain peaks in or near Mexico. Dark skies provide great star viewing.

We have developed a trail system on the family property for enjoyable walks or hikes.

We would be glad to discuss our rates and answer any other questions prior to booking.

We also have another family property #428295 with very similar features.

We spent 5 nights in Casa Cobre over Memorial Day weekend. We were in town to see family and the 4 of us (including our adult kids) thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, spotless adobe home for several nights. The spatious accommodations were bright, comfortable and modern. The property has been completely renovated with nice touches everywhere and artistic attention to detail. The copper theme was fun to track throughout the rental - with copper art work and light switch plates, clever copper pipe railings and even cool copper plumbing in the utility room. This passive solar and environmentally conscientious home perfectly complemented the scenic vistas outside. The hosts live close by and were very responsive, but we really didn't want for anything. The views from the front patio were spectacular during the day and equally remarkable at night with great southern exposure and dark southern star gazing (Scorpio and the Milky Way are nice). We had great weather (warm, but not hot during the day and cool at night) and went on three separate day hikes in the surrounding Gila mountains, including the Cat Walk and the 1,000 year old Juniper Tree at Fort Bayard. There was also an outdoor Blues Festival in Silver City over the weekend with lots of activity in town. We also ate lunch at a local Mexican Restaurant - delicious! We've stayed at lovely homes in Santa Fe, but this was New Mexico at its best! Can't wait to come back!

Winter in Silver City
We are two retired couples who rented Casa Cobre for two months this past winter. Rick and Alice are gracious, attentive, and friendly. They live nearby and they are very respectful of privacy. Four solar adobe homes occupy one corner of this 140 acre plot. Each is well away from the others and not visible from one house to another. The rest of the property is open for strolling, exploring, birding, and appreciating the beauty of the setting in the foothills of the Gila Mountains. When you open the Casa's front door, you are entering a work of art. It is breathtaking. Floors are tiled throughout. The adobe walls are warm to the touch. A few pieces of understated art make the experience interesting but your attention will soon be drawn to the view out the south facing windows. Mountain peaks on the Mexican border 100 miles away can be seen on many of New Mexico's famous sunny days. Four of us shared this lovely home without ever tripping over one another. The kitchen and dining area are on the same level. The kitchen is well appointed and spacious. Four of us, foodies all, could easily put a meal together then dine either in front of the glass door or out on the patio. A few steps down takes you into the large living room/conversation area. Again, you will be drawn to views out the windows. A fireplace is in one corner of the room. We didn’t use it as we didn’t feel the need to add to the ambience. The solar adobe home is warm and we didn’t need the fireplace. A few steps take you back up and into the hall which services the bedrooms and bathrooms. The first bedroom is huge and has two queen beds, a large closet, and a window to control the amount of solar heat coming from the hall. The first bathroom is next to this bedroom. It is equipped with a large shower. The final stop on your journey down the hall, past the windows, is the master suite. Rick and Alice have not installed a pool table here. But there is room enough for one. Or, you could store a small airplane conveniently and still have room to get to the king sized bed. The bath area has another shower and a long counter space with two sinks. The wall which holds the mirrors is arranged to reveal views to the south. This is a comfortable and welcoming home. It is a quiet. The thick adobe walls keep sounds from being transmitted from one area to the next. Two couples enjoyed this home for two months and look forward to renting it again. B&J, M&B

Incredible space, awesome hosts, and beautiful views
We were in town for the Tour of the Gila bicycle race, and could not have enjoyed this space anymore. The owners were awesome, the accomodations exceeded expectations, and the location was spectacular. Could not give it a higher rating!! Thank you!!

This is one of 4 family homes that are on this property. After our aunt passed away, we acquired this house and spent 5 months remodeling and updating it. We have lived on the property for over 40 years.

Why they chose this property

This is a large 2350 square foot home. While it can sleep 6 people, there are enough separate areas to find alone time. The passive solar adobe features of this home make it a truly green experience. With an altitude of 6000', the southwest climate is moderated to 4 gentle seasons. No unbearable summer desert heat and no extreme winters but snow does happen.

What makes this property unique

Quiet, country living close to town. The family property of over 125 acres allows guests to take an enjoyable 1.4 mile round trip hike on the property to observe the native plants and wildlife, or enjoy birding or fabulous stargazing right at the house. Hiking trails nearby include the city-owned Boston Hill open space, the Continental Divide Trail with multiple access points, and the Fort Bayard forest preserve.
