About this property

Waterfront Family Shack ‘Alkira’

About the Space:
Alkira is an original beach shack which overlooks the D’Entrecasteaux Channel on Southern Bruny Island. Many families have spent time holidaying here over the years, and you will be filled with that family shack nostalgia as soon as you step through the front door. It is a small, simple dwelling filled with natural light and all that you’ll need for your stay. Alkira has recently been renovated with a new shower, wood heater and lick of paint, but is still a “shack” at heart.

It is an idyllic haven for couples, families, friends or solo travellers. It offers two bedrooms and a bunk room, a bright coastal bathroom with rain shower, a cosy sun-drenched lounge room, and a fully equipped kitchen and large deck out the front with a barbecue. With incredible views to wake up to and enjoy on the front deck, Alkira promises to create some cherished memories.

The beach is located just out the front of the property, with steps leading down off the main road. It’s perfect for small children at low tide to hunt for crabs, and to wade through ankle deep water if you don’t want to change into your cossie. It’s not unheard of to have this little cove all to yourself.

The space
Bedrooms:
Get a good night’s sleep in one of our two queen bedrooms, each adorned with quality bed linen. There is also a bunk bed in the room of the second bedroom. Extra blankets and electric heaters are provided for those chilly nights on the island. There is a cot provided for the little ones.

Bathroom:
There is a walk-in rain shower with shampoo, conditioner and body wash provided. Also feel free to use the washing machine for longer stays.

Living Space:
Unwind in the cozy living space, complete with a leather 3-seater couch, 2 armchairs, and an inviting indoor fireplace. Plenty of entertainment options for all ages including a smart TV, a collection of novels, games, and puzzles, as well as many editions of the local Island magazine.

Kitchen:
Enjoy cooking (or preparing a delicious cheese platter!) in our fully equipped kitchen with all the essentials including a stove, oven, Nespresso coffee machine, French press coffee maker, express coffee pot, kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge. Basic condiments (oil, salt and pepper) and cooking utensils are provided, ensuring a hassle-free culinary experience during your stay.

Outdoor Amenities:
Step outside and enjoy the amazing views of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel on our large deck, where you will often experience picturesque sunsets over the water as you enjoy your glass of wine. If you are fortunate, you might also spot an Aurora. We also get furry visitors such a wallabies on the lawns surrounding the shack (but please don’t feed them 😊). The deck is also kitted out with a barbecue and market umbrella, which makes it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the local food offerings such as fresh oysters and cheese.

Pet friendly features:
Travelling with pets? Alkira family shack is the perfect option with the large deck that can be closed off. We are in the process of making the yard secure so please ask about this to see if it’s finished in time for your stay!

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire shack and surrounding clearing. There is room for two cars to park comfortably off the road.

Other things to note
Alkira is located a short walk to the Bruny Island Winery, 10-minute drive to Hotel Bruny and 40 minutes from the ferry terminal.

The nearest grocery story is in Adventure Bay which is 30 minutes away so when you are travelling to the ferry it is a great idea to stop in Kingston to pick up some groceries before arriving. Whilst we have water tanks, it is also recommended to bring drinking water with you.

Lovely spot

We enjoyed our stay. A beautiful view and lovely spot. Loved the wallaby's on the front lawn. We were warm, the wood fire was great. Not over priced for what it is. Thanks.

Great place

Great place to stay. A very homely feel. The wood supplied for the fire place was really appreciated as the weather for us was unfortunately horrible for December. It is on tank water so good idea to bring drinking water with you and buying some bread from the “Bread Fridge “ is a must.

Great secluded shack

Loved our stay. The shack has all that’s needed for a relaxing stay. It is nicely nested in a quiet bay with a large deck facing the ocean. No luxury but very comfortable and homely. Highly recommended.

Very relaxing

Just what the doctor ordered... peace and relaxation. The weather didnt allow us to make much use of the wonderful deck, but the views were fabulous. Comfortable with everything we needed for our 6 night stay. Great location to explore Bruny, easy to reach beautiful places.

What a Haven!

We had the loveliest time at Alkira. Set on a quiet road with stunning water views, the home is light, spacious, peaceful and very comfortable. The afternoon sun pours in through the front windows and, if needed, the fire is wonderful! We loved the rustic decor, the comfortable bedroom and well-equipped kitchen. Thank you, Courtney, for sharing your holiday home and communicating so well. We felt so blessed. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer.

Its okay

Wished it didnt rain the two days we were there. Everywhere was so muddy and we didnt get to enjoy much. We were in the cottage but it was cold and no heating otherwise it would have been more pleasant.

quiet peaceful location

We had a nice stay in this charming and conveniently located shack. The kitchen was well equipped and we also enjoyed the games. Despite being assured there would be enough firewood, there was barely enough for one night (we had booked a three night stay) so we had to get more, and it would have been nice to know beforehand where to get it from. Maybe a folder with this kind of info could be made available. Otherwise, all good!

Fabulous outlook

This cottage has amazing views in a quiet location. We were comfortable but the cottage needs a bit of work particularly in the bathroom . No coffee or cooking oil and very dusty and very overgrown garden which was disappointing but the view made up for those inconveniences. I really hope the owners keep a track of cleaning , restocking and gardening because guests expect value for money . Very poor TV reception on Bruny so take a book. Owners very helpful however so maybe just a learning curve. We have owned holiday cottages for many years and you do learn and improve , because you wand guests to love and enjoy everything .

very dirty property

Be very carefull as the photos on the internet are deceiving this property is very dirty mould around the windows mice dirt in the draws the beds in the 2 rear bedrooms had not been made when we arrived and quiet obivously had been slept in the night before. We were there for 3 nights the second night we ran out of water so no showers and could not flush the toilet. To courtneys credit she did give us a refund of half our money the yards are very untidy rubbish up the back yard the curtains inside were filthy only for the fact we had paid for the 3 nights we would most definately not stayed. As for cooking we did not eat there we were not game to because of the state of all the cooking utensils even the toaster had mould in it and as for the micro wave it was disgusting the fridge had not been cleaned rotting fish bait in the freezer the out side of the fridge was filthy also.I can not rate this property.

Amazing views....

Poor attention to detail. eg key unobtainable as wasn't in key box, no tinder available for fire and only a direct call to host resolved the issues. Poor communication from host as she didn't take criticisms well during our messages to resolve the key issue as well as fire issues. House is tired and truly is a family shack but needs more refining for paying guests. We would not stay here again.

About the host

Host profile image
Hi there! My name is Courtney and I live on the little island of Tasmania :) I have been an Airbnb host for over ten years and absolutely love it. I work as a speech and language pathologist and specialise in language and literacy disorders. However, Airbnb has become my second job which I really enjoy and have expanded with a lovely holiday house on Bruny Island. When I'm not down at Bruny or exploring new places around Tasmania, I will scope out gigs and music festivals to go to - and often spend ridiculous amounts of money getting there! I also used to live in London and love travelling - which is how I was first introduced to Airbnb. I really enjoy meeting new people and showing them the best parts of our little island. I look forward to hearing from you and having you stay at my homely shack in Bruny Island!
