About this property

Echidna on Bruny, luxury within island bushland

The house has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms plus a bunk room.

A wood-burning heater (cut wood provided) with backup heat pump provides warmth on arrival. The heat pump is also an air-conditioner.

Your drive in is through native bush so keep your eye out for the wildlife, many of which make their presence felt in the dusk silence.

Bruny Island extends 55 km from Dennes Point in the north to Cape Bruny Lighthouse in the south with a modest resident human population of around 800. Access is via a vehicular ferry from Kettering, a half hour drive south from Hobart.

The island is rich with specialty produce and craft cottage industries; however, you need to bring your own food for your stay. Tea, coffee, and basic cooking condiments are provided to assist you on arrival.

We are a 15-20 minute drive from the ferry disembarkation at Roberts Point.

Within a 15 minute drive from Echidna on Bruny you can enjoy fresh local oysters, artisan French-style cheeses, locally smoked meats, inviting beaches for walking and swimming, a cafe with an outstanding view, an art gallery showcasing local artists, Tasmanian whiskies.

A number of moderate-difficulty bush and coastal walks are within a short drive. The historic Bruny Island Quarantine Station is a 20-minute walk away.

Family visit
As usual, we enjoyed our stay (3rd time) and this time had family stay with us who enjoyed it as well. Our host was lovely, the accommodation excellent and the wildlife we saw this time was phenomenal - quolls, wallabies, potoroos, red robins, green rosellas, currawongs and echidnas.

A peaceful paradise
Superb property, immaculately clean, it had everything we needed and more. The wildlife was amazing, watching quolls for hours each night. The property is in a great location, the hosts are lovely and extremely helpful. Couldn’t recommend highly enough. Needed at least a week there.

Had another terrific stay at Echidna. Always love staying here and our host is so lovely and welcoming. Enjoyed seeing the wallabies visit the garden one morning as well. Very peaceful place, great to unwind.

Superb Luxurious Isolation
The property was lovely, very clean and the kitchen very well equipped. It would greatly enhance our stay if there were block-out blinds in the upstairs bedroom. Also, it would be less stressful to drive back in the dark if there were reflectors or solar lights along the path to the house. Overall we enjoyed the stay very much - a beautiful, quiet and very comfortable home in the bush. We even got to see four wallabies in the morning!

Perfect Bruny location
Perfect house for our group. Everything has been thought of: plenty of wood for our daily fires, bbq, fully equipped kitchen, books n games. Wish we were staying for a week! Bush setting but close to everything. Stunning views around Bruny.

Why they chose this property

We built this property so we could share our love of the bush, birds, animals and plants in a private, relaxing natural environment.

We love Bruny Island, the community, the history, the locally-sourced and created food, the magnificent and varied coastline. Our experience is always rich with interest and variety.

What makes this property unique

Our stand of grasstrees (Xanthorrhoea australis) is magnificent, plus orchids, wallabies that come to the deck as dusk, mischievous quolls, our resident echidnas.
