About this property
The Outpost in the Snowy Mountains
The Outpost is a 900 acre property of mostly alpine woodland supporting an abundant population of native wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, platypus, echidnas and a multitude of birds. The Yaouk Valley is unique in Australia being bounded by National Parks on three sides; the Kosciuszko National Park, the Namadgi National Park and the Yaouk Nature reserve.
Situated in alpine country on the banks of the Upper Murrumbidgee River, we are located on one of Australia’s best fly fishing rivers and home to wild brown and rainbow trout. Because of its unique fly fishing qualities the river was selected for competition in the 1999 World Fly Fishing Championships and the 2008 by Fly Fish Australia for its National Championships. We are also a site for the 2015 National Fly Fishing Championships.
We are located 1.5 hours drive south of Canberra on a scenic partly unsealed road through the Namadgi National Park. Mountains surround us and the area is famous for its fly fishing, hiking, horse riding and snow skiing.
The nearest village is Adaminaby, which is a scenic twenty-five minutes drive away.

Activities
Fly fishing, considered blue ribbon water by experienced fishers. Enjoy a variety of walks from easy to challenging on designated walking tracks on the property. Enjoy spotting the abundant native animals:- platypus, kangaroos, wallabies, echidna, wombats, possums, and many birds, rosellas, wild duck, wedge tail eagles, hawks, herons, finches and swallows among them. Play tennis or swim in the Platypus pool. There’s always something to do or see – or simply relax.
The Snowy Mountains offer a variety of activities for the non-fisher or those fishers taking a rest. From the rigors of horse riding the ranges to the relaxation of a book beside the murmuring river, you can take it all at your own pace. Do this without leaving our valley or if you are feeling adventurous, you can make the most of the nearby National Parks and attractions.
Summer Fly fishing, walking and trekking, mountain bike ridding, horse riding, nature. Swimming in the Olympic pool sized Platypus Pool with its very own Mermaid Rock, is an experience not to be missed.
Winter We get frequent snow falls and days are filled with bracing walks and enjoying tea and scones around a warm cosy fire. Mt Selwyn is our closest ski field and a 45 minute drive away. It is the most northerly of Australia’s ski resorts with a base elevation of 1,492 metres and a top elevation of 1,614 metres. That might sound high but it’s actually lower than Yaouk Peak (1,784 metres), which is adjacent to The Outpost (see Walks).

Neat cozy cottage in a natural, tranquil and very picturesque setting. The spring garden was blossoming, the chickens and lambs delightful and the river and sunsets lovely.Caretakers Wayne and Donna were welcoming, knowledgeable and very helpful. Loved the fresh eggs, cozy fire and fresh flowers.
Stayed here to go skiing. While it was a good hour drive while the snow was around, the quality, uniqueness and cosiness of the property made it well worth the drive. Be aware there is no town shop etc, so come prepared regarding food etc
My partner and I stayed over the past weekend and had the most amazing time. The cottage is perfect - so much room & the fire was amazing. We saw platypus, wombats & kangaroos, and played tennis by the lake. The outpost is a short drive from Mount Selwyn where we had so much fun in the snow. Both owners and caretakers were lovely and super accommodating. Can’t wait to come back!
We had a lovely stay at The Outpost. The hosts were great and very helpful. The Outpost is a wonderful place to relax and is within easy access to Adaminaby and Selwyn snow fields. Our children had hours of fun exploring the riverside and we were lucky enough to have beautiful snowfall on the last day of our stay. We will definitely be staying here again in the near future. 👍🏻

Thanks so much for the review. Glad you enjoyed your stay and the snow!
We booked a short stay for our family and ended up with our extended family staying. The property is in a lovely location with lots of things to do. We went on daily walks and played outside with the children. At night we had a campfire. The chickens had fresh eggs for us and one of the sheep had a lamb the day we arrived. Our hosts were very friendly and looked after us really well. We had a very stay.
Cottage was kept very clean. All of the kitchen requirements were there. The coffee machine was really good. BBQ was working well and cooked beautiful steaks.
There is only the Fireplace for heating. No central heating or electric heaters. The beds are heated.
Privacy: We knew there were only the 2 caretakerswho were nice, respectful and kept their distance (living in the "Shed") but on the second day we noticed a couple just came in through the gates with their dog and start playing tennis at the court. It would've been good to know this before arriving here.
The experience overall was great.

Glad you enjoyed your stay.
Privacy: We only ever have one guest party staying on the property at one time. The people mentioned in the above review were the children of our Caretakers who were visiting at the time. This happens on very rare occasions and should not disturb guests.
I spent a long weekend with my two boys (3 & 10) at the property and we absolutely loved it! The Outpost is nice and secluded in the bush and has the river as company.
The hosts and caretakers were all really lovely and super helpful. The cottage was also really comfortable and toasty warm with the fire. The gardens are really spacious with plenty of room for the youngsters to explore and run around.
Looking forward to another visit in the future!
A few things to note: The drive from Canberra through Namadgi took us 2 hours. (The road was ok and I'm a competent driver on dirt)
The cottage is set back from the river and sits behind the main house which overlooks it.
A wonderful, well located place for those who want to fly fish and have a stretch of good river to themselves. The accommodation was excellent and is highly recommended.
We stayed here back in winter 2019 and said we would be back, unfortunately COVID kept us away in 2020 and 2021. We finally made it back for Autumn 2022! Even though the kids are teenagers now, they still had a blast exploring the property and even had a go at tennis. Hubby and I just sat back and relaxed.
A beautiful get-away and so well looked after. The property managers, Wayne and Donna were really welcoming and even met us on the road and guided us up to the property (it had been raining a lot and so they brought us in a different way so we wouldn't get bogged). We saw platypus, wombats, kangaroos and wallabies galore. The cottage was really tidy and had everything we needed. Loved it and will defintely be coming back again. Thank you.
Cute and cosy cottage! We really enjoyed our stay. It is a great place to relax and unwind. Lots to explore, cute animals, tennis court and a fire pit! The caretakers were lovely and looked after us very well!!
We had a very happy holiday. We spotted eagles, wombat, lots of wallabies, and even a platypus.
The host texted us the night before with an update on a local road which we were considering taking - very helpful.
Hope to come again.
What a magical location. So relaxing, sitting by the river, reading a book, and listening to the birds. The kids loved trying to catch fish, bush walking, feeding the horses and sheep, playing tennis and the canoe was a big hit! The resident wallaby's and kangaroos were all over the property and we loved seeing them close to the cabin on dusk. The cabin was very cosy with an indoor fireplace and warm beds which were super comfy! We will be back!!..

Thanks Liesl for your review and pleased to hear you had a great time with us.
Thanks to Ken & Judy and Wayne & Donna for a beautifully appointed, very comfortable cottage. The grounds were stunning, the walks suberb and, not sure if this was your doing, the weather perfect. Complementary wine and Easter eggs were a nice touch and delicious too. Watching kangaroos eating apples, platypus, wombats, a couple of friendly chooks and the cutest sheep ever climb the trees to eat the quinces made for a great weekend.
