About this property
Vineyard farmstay retreat in the McLaren Vale wine region
Experience the Australian countryside in a converted shearing shed with all modern comforts just 45 minutes from Adelaide. It is in a secluded spot in the McLaren Vale wine region on a 90-acre property. Your hosts are local wine makers who live across an orchard paddock 200 meters away.
Enter your accommodation through the traditional shearing shed to arrive at a cosy and romantic dwelling that has fantastic vineyard views. The Shearing Shed was recently renovated to a very high standard, and although rustic in appearance, it has a stylish modern interior, with all of the modern conveniences that you would expect from a boutique country escape; a queen size bed, great shower and a fully equipped kitchen, reverse cycle air conditioning, wi-fi and a deck that overlooks a small creek.
The period galvanised shed has an inviting South East facing deck where you can sit, relax and enjoy the fresh country air. It is the perfect setting to cook a BBQ and dine together, either with friends or alone, while enjoying some of the region’s wine.
Weather permitting in wintertime, there is a camp fire in the paddock to enjoy outdoor cooking. If it is too cold outside then why not sit indoors by the combustion wood fired stove with a good book enjoying the view from large picture windows?
Explore the surrounding cellar doors, vineyards, local beaches and great restaurants.
The Shearing Shed is located only 10 minutes from McLaren Vale township, which caters for all shopping needs, and 15 minutes drive from Willunga with its numerous cafes, restaurants and historical sites as well as the famous Saturday morning Willunga Farmers’ Market.
A 20 minute drive will take you to fantastic beaches such as Maslins, Port Willunga and Aldinga where you can fish, swim and take beach walks.
There are a number of bushwalking tracks in the area and the Shiraz Trail is a biking track that runs between McLaren Vale and Willunga.
We also invite you to just relax and take walks around the 90 acre property with its pretty vineyard and spectacular hillside views and to help yourself to produce from the orchard, chook pen and vegetable garden (when in season).
For the keen golfer there is a tranquil golf course at Willunga.
The Shearing Shed is a great place to stay if attending weddings, anniversaries or other events in the area. It is also a great location for an artist’s retreat - and a wonderful romantic getaway!

Great location!Loved the rustic quarters on the outside with modern comfort on the inside. The air-con worked very well in 42 heat too.Complimentary bottle of wine was a nice touch.Only thing to note is that the skylights lighten the room early.
Charming cottage, perfectly located for access to all the McLaren area has to offer. The hosts are friendly and welcoming, supplying lots of information about the property and local area. Would happily stay again.

Thanks Sally! We love it when guests enjoy the property and all the delights of McLaren Vale and surrounds.
Charming cottage/conversion, really great amenities and cooking supplies.
Great communication, directions and check-in process. Close to many great wineries.
Highly recommend.
Peaceful, with lots to explore. The walks around the property were great. Close to McLaren Flat and Vale and used as a base for our e-bike experience. Great shower and kitchen facilities. Would love to stay again :)
This is an elegantly kitted out and authentic farmstay experience with all amenities in a breathtakingly serene location. Accommodation was amazing, capturing a rural feel with quality fittings and every convenience. The decking and outdoor BBQ enabled us to eat al fresco and even see the friendly sheep! We didn't want to leave.
The Shearing Shed is not only set amongst vines and beautiful scenery, but fulfils every expectation of a well designed and resourced place to stay while still retaining the warm rustic feeling. In every way the space is stunning. The owner provided us with great resources about the local area and was always available to communicate with when needed. A special place to stay.
This property was our dream! It is so beautiful, well equipped and in the most stunning location. We did not want to leave.
Libby and Mark have thought of everything and have created the most fabulous accomodation.
An enjoyable stay in a comfortable clean and well equipped studio cabin, adjacent to an old shearing shed surrounded by vineyards and sheep pastures. Well out of town, the property offers pleasant views of rural property through picture windows, an authentic country feeling, and quiet surroundings.

About the host

I am a retired arts administrator and my husband manages Coriole, the family owned winery, which is 10 minutes drive away from our home at Sandalwood.
We are pleased to be able to host guests in our converted shearing shed on our vineyard property.
We love gardening and have orchards, vegetable gardens, ornamental gardens and a fledgling arboretum. Guests are welcome to explore the whole property, which is also home to some chooks, pigs and sheep (as well as kangaroos).
Why they chose this property
We moved to Sandalwood in 2010 after living nearby at Coriole, the family winery, for many years.
We love the peace and quiet of this secluded part of the world.
What makes this property unique
The property has wonderful views from the hill, especially at sunset.
We have large landscaped gardens around our own house which is across the orchard paddock from the shearing shed. The 12 acres of vines grow a number of warmer climate varieties (sangiovese, prosecco, barbera, picpoul and nero d'avola.)
The atmospheric disused shearing shed was fun to convert - and it has been a great way to be able to share this beautiful region with our guests.
We opened the Sandalwood Shearing Shed in 2016. Feedback from guests has been very positive. Guests have told us that they love the wood burning heater in winter, sitting on the deck at dusk, the peace and quiet, the morning birdsongs and the hillside walks to watch the sunset ..... as well as the proximity to wineries and restaurants.
