We enjoyed our stay at Playas Ocotal and felt right at home in this lovingly cared for condo. Its location right above the beach insured almost constant breezes and the sound of the surf was a relaxing accompaniment to the comfortably furnished interior of the condo.
Amazing location across from infinity pool with beautiful trees flowers and birds; short walk to beach, larger pool, and restaurant. Very helpful and polite property staff. Snorkeling off the beach, and howler monkeys in the trees off of deck in the AM=highlight of our trip.
Our family of four spent two night here. The condo is very clean and well-appointed. Ocotal beach is wonderful. We enjoyed dinner at Father Roosters and some very good snorkling. One tip is to buy charcoal in town if you intend to use a grill. Thanks, I would love to return!

I'm so glad they enjoyed their stay. We did have charcoal and lighter fluid in the utility room at one time, but I haven't checked lately. I'll see about restocking it.
Only bad thing. Directions to get there. Took 2 1/2 hours for a forty five minute trip. The location was spotless. Great accommodations and very secure

I provide my guests with very detailed directions to drive from the airport to our condo. It is always difficult to find your way when you have never been to a location before. My guests arrived after dark, it was hard for them to recognize the various landmarks along the route, and they missed the turn to the beaches. Once they realized their mistake, it took about an hour to turn around and get back on track. Unfortunately, the roads in Costa Rica are narrow, with no shoulders or street lights. If there are direction signs, they are often too far ahead or too close and you will miss the turn. I will add the GPS coordinates to my directions, which may help some guest find their way. If all goes well, it should only be a 45 minute drive from the airport to our condo.
This is our favorite community to stay in, on Playa Ocotal, it's very safe, with a great location - close to Coco, but quiet and peaceful. This home is immaculate: very clean, well-stocked kitchen, right across from the infinity pool (access to two others), and it's right on the beach. We watched a monkey catch the sunset right in front of the unit. Appreciated the beach towels, and laundry washer/dryer too.
A return trip for us to Ocotal and Los Almendros, although our first visit to condo 11. Nicely appointed with newer decor and appliances. The mattresses were very comfortable, which isn't usually the case for me. Everything you would need in the kitchen.
Father Rooster beach restaurant and the best beach in Guanacaste are just steps away.
But it's the patio, the view and sleeping to the sound of the ocean right below you that makes this special. It's hard to leave, for sure.
Thank you and see you soon!

I'm so glad that our guests enjoyed their stay. We may not have a wide ocean view, but you can hear the waves on the beach below. Our deck is a pleasant place to enjoy the breeze and view the birds, iguanas, and monkeys in the trees.
My family of four spent our last night in CR at this home. We LOVED the location right near one of our favorite beaches in CR! The home had everything we needed and more. Comfortable beds, well-appointed kitchen, good AC, great washer/dryer, and solid Wi-Fi. Check-in and check-out were seamless and quick.
FYI, the kitchen has all the utensils you may need, but no salt, oil, or other such basics. You need to supply those yourself. There are plenty of stores within a 10-minute drive, though, so this shouldn't be an issue as long as you have a car.
My only complaint is that the property wasn't available for longer! This property will be at the top of our list when/if we head back to the area!

Nice time
I rented this condo for a little over a week and was quite impressed. You get a lot more for the price than trying to stay in a hotel. Of course, you have to cook your own meals but I don't mind that. There is also a very good restaurant in walking distance from the condo. The condo was clean, well kept and fully furnished. I only had one issue which was these tiny bugs that kept crawling all over the bathroom counter. Don't know what they were but, I just went to the store and picked up a can of Raid and the problem was eliminated. The views are beautiful and I especially enjoyed sleeping with the patio door open (master bedroom....it has a wood frame door as well as a screen door) and listening to the waves all night. I would definately rent the place again if I return to Costa Rica.
We loved staying here! It is large, comfortable and bright and the location is perfect, just a short (though adventurous) drive to all the shops and restaurants in Coco but away from the crowds and touristy area. The beach is beautiful, with half black sand and half golden at the other end. The water is very clear, we even saw a large stingray in the shallows one morning. There is a fairly steep (but short) hill to get to this condo, so we got our leg workouts in whenever we went to the beach! There is a convenient shortcut path to the beach so you don’t have to go all the way back to the main entrance of the community. The kitchen is huge and has everything you could need (note, paper towels are not provided). The A/C worked great, the condo stayed cool even when it was off. The bed was very comfortable, but we would recommend adding some blackout shades or curtains in the Master. Also, there is a window in the door of the main entrance that someone could see in if the lights are on, we put a towel on it but a privacy curtain would be nice. There is a pool directly across from this condo and we never saw anyone there, the community is pretty small and quiet. There were 2 chairs for the beach, but they were the folding “camp” style and not at all comfortable. Carol, the owner, had excellent communication and provided all the information needed for our stay. The staff in the management office were very pleasant and helpful during check-in and out. Father Rooster's restaurant just next door on the beach has really good food, ambience and service. Overall, we really enjoyed this condo and we would stay there again.

I'm pleased that our recent guests enjoyed their stay. And I appreciate the constructive criticism. The master bedroom window faces northwest and receives very little direct sunlight. Therefore, I thought simple curtains were sufficient rather than blackout shades. There are blackout curtains in the guest bedroom, which does receive some direct sunlight in the morning. I have been working on a curtain for the front door but haven't quite figured out how to hang one that doesn't interfere with the doorknob. I'll see if I can come up with something that will work to provide some privacy at night.
I suppose the camp style folding chairs aren't very comfortable, but anything else would be heavy and awkward to carry down to the beach and back up the hill. I'll keep my eyes open for something more suitable.
Carol was extremely helpful and her communications were top notch. She asked about our goals and linked us with surf and fish tours nearby. The condo was spotless with beautiful views to the beach. The entire complex was quiet and clean with pretty pool areas and friendly staff.
The house is beautiful and very "Costa Rican." We enjoyed the pools and the beach every day. We are very familiar with the area as we visit a couple of times per year. Make sure to enjoy a meal or two at Father Roosters and a massage on the beach!
We were only able to stay one night but the condo was clean, comfortable, and very inviting. One of the pools is right across the street which was cool. The trees off the balcony in back are host to various birds and lizards which was pretty neat. It’s also a very short (but kind of steep) walk to the beach. I enjoyed our stay (even in the midst of tropical storm Bonnie!!!)
This place checked every boxed we wanted in a beach vacation rental.
Fall asleep to waves- check!
Quick drive to shops & markets- check!
Short walk to beach- check!
Chill pool area- check! (I watched monkeys play while floating on my back in the pool)
*Bonus beach side bar & grill in walking distance down the beach*- check!
We had a fabulous & comfortable stay. Thank you!
This VRBO was exactly what we needed. The owners were prompt to reply when we had questions, and were very informative with driving directions from the airport to the VRBO. I don't think we could've picked a better spot.

I'm so pleased that our guests enjoyed their stay.
We liked the location and layout of the apartment. We loved to sit on the terrace and watch the monkeys and listen to the sound of the waves. We also enjoyed the pool across the street. It was an oasis. When we had minor issues they were mostly promptly addressed. However, we could not get the safe working and that would be important since we did prevent a break-in at our property. It seems that theft has increased in the area. We absolutely loved our stay and would like to come back.

I'm pleased that they enjoyed staying in our condo. I knew that they were having difficulty using the safe. The office staff tried to help them and I sent them directions. I offered to come and try it myself. When I got no further response, I assumed that they were able to follow the directions that I sent. I should have verified that they were using the safe. I will go there tomorrow and fix the safe before our next guest arrives. Crime has increased in the area and I tried to stress the importance of protecting your valuables. I did not know that my guests had prevented a break in.
The checkin was simple. The house was clean and well furnished with comfortable beds. Amazing view from the living room, master bedroom, and balcony. The beach was quiet and clean. Water was not clear so not good for snorkeling, but was good for swimming and lounging. Right next to the restaurant Father Roosters which had great food and amazing live music right on the beach.
We enjoyed bird watching from the balcony. Very clean and nicely furnished.

About the host
Hosted by Carol Lee
The owners are Gordy and Carol Lee. We were both born and raised in Alaska. In 2002, we came to Costa Rica on vacation and bought the condo in Los Almendros. We weren't ready to retire, so we came down for a couple of weeks a year and rented it out so others could enjoy our little piece of paradise. Carol retired in 2006 and lived in the condo while we built a house on the Tres Volcanes Golf Course about 20 minutes away. We moved into our new home in July 2008 and enjoy life in Costa Rica.
Why they chose this property
In February 2002, we came to Costa Rica on a three week vacation. We traveled around the country for a week and then our travel agent had booked us into the Ocotal Hotel for the last two weeks. We are both certified scuba divers and the hotel had a dive shop on Playa Ocotal. Unfortunately, the Ocotal Hotel closed many years ago. We had no intention of buying property when we arrived in Costa Rica. However, we met a realtor who showed us several condominiums. Los Almendros was the only property that was right on the beach. The other properties had great ocean views, but it was a long hike or drive to the beach. Our condo was under construction when we saw it, and we spent the rest of our vacation learning about buying property in Costa Rica. We still haven't gone scuba diving!
What makes this property unique
Our condo is in Playa Ocotal, which is three miles from the town of Playas del Coco. You can enjoy the amenities in Coco and then sleep peacefully away from the night life. It is a good home base to explore the many activities in the area: Zip lines, fishing, snorkeling, diving, sunset cruises, mud baths, and wildlife tours to name a few. Ocotal beach is quite safe for families with young children. You can have your style of vacation, whether you want to relax and read a book, enjoy dining and dancing in Coco, or experience nature.
