There are mountain cottages, and then there are mountain cottages that have been loved by the same family for generations — where the wormy chestnut walls have absorbed decades of good summers, the stone fireplaces have warmed countless winter weekends, and the screened porch has watched more Highlands sunsets than anyone has bothered to count.

Laurelwood is the second kind.

Built in 1935 and perched above Highlands Country Club on Hudson Road, this original cottage wears its history beautifully — chunky stonework framing the grounds, schoolhouse windows letting the light in just so, farmhouse kitchen cabinets worn smooth in the right places, and three stone fireplaces distributed through the house like punctuation. It is unapologetically old Highlands. And in a world of renovated-to-within-an-inch-of-their-life vacation rentals, that is increasingly rare and quietly wonderful.

A House With Rooms That Have Personality - Four bedrooms across two levels, each with its own distinct character — because this house was furnished by people who actually cared, not a staging company working from a mood board. The main level hosts three bedrooms and two bathrooms alongside a kitchen that smells like butcher block and hardwood floors and every good meal anyone has ever cooked here. Upstairs, the king suite with its ensuite bath and wood-burning fireplace operates as a private retreat within the retreat — the room that whoever claims it first will not be giving up without a negotiation.

The Screened Porch is the Reason - The owners will tell you themselves: the big screened porch is where Laurelwood earns its place in your memory. Mountain views. Fabulous sunsets. Mature trees and shrubs creating a privacy that feels earned rather than manufactured. Whether it's morning coffee, a long al fresco lunch, or an evening watching the light change over the ridgeline, this porch has a way of making time feel more generous than it actually is.

Out front, a patio with a gas grill, firepit, and classic iron patio set handles the evenings when the screened porch gives way to open sky and the fire needs to be a little closer. Both outdoor spaces reflect the same unhurried sensibility that defines the entire property.

The Details That Matter - Three stone fireplaces. Wormy chestnut paneling throughout. Schoolhouse windows. Mature grounds with old stonework that took decades to look this good. A newly added EV charging station for guests — free of charge, because of course a house this thoughtful includes that too. Plenty of parking. Easily accessible. Five to seven minutes from downtown Highlands when the outside world eventually calls.

The owners believe you'll fall in love with Laurelwood.

They're right.

What our guests are saying...

"Highlands Getaway. We rented this house with another couple, and between us we have 3 children under 2. The house was perfect! The house had plenty of space, a beautiful fireplace and a wonderful screened in porch. The location is second to none. A short 5 minute drive to town makes the house an ideal location for anyone who wants to spend time in Highlands. Well be back!" - Rent In Highlands Vacation Rental Guest, Joe
