About this property

Charming, Fully Restored, Greek Revival House, Farmland Setting

Guests immediately feel comfortable when entering this charming historic home. Every room is tastefully decorated with a combination of antique and modern furniture, oriental rugs and art works. Multiple windows infuse the house with light and include views of farmland, the patio and the barns surrounding the house. Enclosed by a stone wall, the backyard patio is a private space equipped with chairs, a table and barbecue. Inside, the expansive Sun Room overlooking the patio has a brick floor, high ceilings, skylights and hand hewn wood beams. The Sun Room is furnished with a table for informal meals and snacks; a sofa; and roll top desk. A kitchen, fully stocked with all necessary cooking utensils, appliances, and dinnerware, has a center island and an old-fashioned pantry. A formal dining room with Windsor chairs and a long, cherry table is a pleasurable place to enjoy meals. The living room is equipped with a large sofa and TV. The den can be used as an office space with a desk and office chair and/or an extra bedroom (with its single sized convertible bed). There is a full bathroom downstairs with a claw foot tub and handheld shower, while the upstairs bathroom has a combination shower and tub. There are two bedrooms upstairs as well as a room with a washer and dryer. The large west bedroom has a queen-sized bed and closets as well as a TV. The east bedroom has a closet and matching twin beds. Beautiful hand hewn ceiling beams are visible in every room upstairs.
Also included are two barns: One is a small game barn (a former Chicken Barn) which serves as a playroom. It is equipped with a ping pong table and a Cornhole game. The other barn serves as a one car garage. It is located at the end of the driveway directly across from the house.
The house is named after the magnificent white oak tree on the property. A delightful walk through the fields leads to the tree as well as a large wildlife pond created by a dam built by beavers. The landscape is peaceful with 100 acres of rolling hills planted in hay and worked by a local farm family. Surrounding the house and barns is a beautifully maintained lawn area.
Pets are allowed, but there is an additional fee of $20 per pet per day.
The White Oak House is located in the township of Hoosick, where the scenic agricultural landscape still reflects the paintings by Grandma Moses, the renowned folk artist who lived in the area. The house is situated on a country road in an agricultural community within easy driving distance of the Capital District and Saratoga Springs, NY; Williamstown, MA; Bennington, VT; and several ski areas. It is just 5 miles from the village of Hoosick Falls, northern Rensselaer County, NY and 10 miles from the village of Cambridge, southern Washington County. Cambridge offers an active community arts center with theater and musical performances (Hubbard Hall Projects), and surrounding communities offer a wide range of cultural and sporting activities. For example, Williamstown is renowned for its summer theater, as well as the Williams College Museum and Clark Art Institute. Saratoga Springs has thoroughbred horse racing and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the National Museum of Dance and the National Museum of Racing in addition to several other museums. Bennington has the Bennington Museum, Bennington Battle Monument, and the Bennington Pottery. Manchester, VT is known for its shopping outlets, including Orvis, the famous store/school specializing in fly fishing. The nearby Battenkill River is a must for trout fishing, and the Little Hoosic River also offers fine fishing opportunities. Antiquing is a popular pastime in the area which has numerous antique stores. Hiking trails are also plentiful within a half hour to an hour’s drive. There are several horseback riding stables in the area and numerous lakes for swimming. Nearby lakes include Lake Paran, N. Bennington, VT; Lake Shaftsbury, Shaftsbury, VT., Lake Lauderdale, Cambridge, NY; Grafton Mt. Lakes and Grafton Lakes, State Park, Grafton, NY. Canoeing, tubing and kayaking opportunities exist both on the Hoosic River (with a boat launch just a few miles away) and the Battenkill River. The closest golf course, Dutchhaven in Buskirk, is a 5 minute drive. Other nearby golf courses can be found at: the Hoosick Falls Country Club; Mount Anthony Country Club, Bennington, VT; and Windy Hills Golf Course in Greenwich, NY. The closest ski area is Willard Mountain (a 15 minute drive). Other ski areas within a reasonable commute include Jiminy Peak in Hancock, MA; Stratton Mountain, Bondville, VT; Mt. Snow, West Dover, VT. Hiking opportunities are also nearby.
Late summer offerings include the two agricultural fairs: the Schaghticoke Fair in Schaghticoke, NY and the Washington County Fair in Greenwich, NY. Fine restaurants can be found throughout the area, some with local color, others with gourmet cuisine. Grocery and drug stores, banks, restaurants, and a variety of specialty stores are about 6 miles away. The beauty of the fall foliage cannot be extolled enough. It is every bit as spectacular in the Buskirk area as in VT.
There is a sister property I own for rent #2083060, the Buskirk School House, that has a queen-sized bed. It is in very close proximity to the White Oak House and equally beautiful.
The White Oak House is available for rental year-round. All seasons at the house are distinctive. In the fall, the vistas of the multi-colored foliage are breathtaking; winter is serene; spring is noteworthy for early blossoms; and in summer nature shows off its bounty of flowering plants.

One of a Kind
Constance was more than helpful in communicating and accessing our Thanksgiving stay. She has done a superb job of renovating: top notch. The most impressive aspect is the furnishings especially the kitchen which is amply stocked. We look forward to our return stay!

White Oak House
Wow-what an incredible two month stay we had at the “White Oak House”! We chose this property for the need of privacy, relaxation and nature. We also were visiting our children in Saratoga Springs during our visit. The restored farmhouse was stocked very well with all the needs required for a long stay. The hostess, Connie, also provided a Roku tv for the master bedroom and lounge chairs for our outdoor use while we were there to enhance our experience. The beds and linens were very comfortable. The internet worked well as we worked daily from the office areas available. The beautiful landscape and house did not disappoint. There were deer sightings each day. Some even close enough to eat apples from the nearby tree. It was a wonderful place to rejuvenate. Connie, thanks again for sharing your wonderful property with us!! We would love to return again in the future!! Fondly, Ed & Lori

About the host

I am an artist who settled in Buskirk in the early 1970s, after graduating from nearby Bennington College. I was drawn to this area by the beauty of its historic farmsteads and its open space. Over the years, besides painting, I became involved in conserving agricultural land and the rural landscape. The White Oak Farm has a conservation easement on it, meaning that the land cannot be subdivided for housing and can only be used for agriculture.
Another passion of mine has been restoration. Over the years, I have purchased numerous homes and barns and have renovated and/or restored them. I currently own two other homes that I offer for short term rental in addition to the White Oak House. All the homes reflect their historical heritage, but are equipped with modern conveniences. My studio is located in a renovated historic barn.

Why they chose this property

The White Oak House is located in a particularly beautiful rural community. The fields, forests, streams, rolling hills and historic farmsteads still feel timeless. So far, the original division of land has remained relatively intact with active farmsteads of about 100 - 150 acres. Agriculture is still the dominant activity in the area. The assortment of dairy, vegetable, horse and sheep farms are a constant pleasure to observe as farmers drive their equipment, planting the fields and harvesting the crops. The large tracts of land allow for an abundance of wildlife, a constant source of pleasure to spot in the landscape. The area also offers a unique combination of country, culture, and leisure activities. While private and rural, it is situated in close proximity to a number of interesting towns in Vermont, Massachusetts as well as NY.

What makes this property unique

Surrounded by farm fields and woods, the farmhouse is an ideal spot for the enjoyment of nature. Deer and wild turkeys are frequently sighted in the landscape as well as chipmunks and rabbits and other small animals. Hiking, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing are welcome activities (sleds and tubes are provided for sledding when there's snow). One walking path leads to the astonishingly large white oak tree and a large wetland pond created by an immense beaver dam. Walking or driving along picturesque country roads leading to and from the White Oak House is a favorite pastime for visitors as well as residents. Bike riding is also a pleasure, taking in the views of the countryside at closer range. The beauty of the fall foliage cannot be extolled enough, but every season offers stunning vistas.
