The Castle Bothy, self-catering accommodation next to historic Auchindoun Castle
The ‘ Castle Bothy’ is a luxury holiday apartment created out of the old stone barns (‘steading’) at former Parkhead Farm. It sits high on a hill overlooking Glen Fiddich and the heather covered slopes of The Cabrach moor, just 200m from the impressive 550 year old ruins of one of Scotland’s most iconic hilltop fortresses.
The property is a little unusual in that it has a bright open plan living space, including the kitchen and dining areas, located at first floor level above the bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor.
There are wonderful elevated views of the castle through the large windows, and an external timber stair that leads down into the small wild flower garden. When the ‘Northern Lights’ (Aurora Borealis) come out to play this is an exceptional viewpoint from which to experience them.
It is ideal for a couple but can accommodate up to 4 people. For larger groups it can be rented in conjunction with a similar cottage next door - ‘The Castle Byre’ (subject to availability, see separate combined listing for a discounted rate).
The beds in the main bedroom can be pre-configured as twin 3’ singles or zip linked as a Super King size double according to your stated preference. The second (smaller) bedroom has a standard (4’6” wide) double bed.
Underfloor heating throughout the ground floor and radiators at first floor level make this a very cosy little house.

The Bothy is a true gem in the heart of Speyside, amazing views of Auchindoun Castle and easy access to the rest of the Whisky Trail. Colin and Penny are wonderful hosts that do everything they can to ensure your stay is really enjoyable. The fridge had the essentials and there was also a dram or two to try on arrival. Great place to stay!
This was a lovely location. The views were stunning. Colin & Penny were very helpful and friendly. They went above and beyond to provide a wonderful visit. We would definitely stay here again.
We loved our stay at this property! The location was perfect for distillery visits and the view of the castle was truly amazing. Not to mention the visits from cows and sheep. I recommend this location and property and hope to visit again.
Amazing property and excellent communication with Colin. Do you want to stay in a quiet place where you can look out over a castle? This is your place. If you have the opportunity to stay here, I would highly recommend it!!
Penny and Collin are lovely people who were very welcoming and helpful. The Bothy had everything we needed plus. Location scenic, peaceful and close to a local village. A great place to explore from.
We had the most relaxing and enjoyable stay in The Bothy. It was a real home from home for us, very comfortable and extremely well maintained and stocked. Lots of little added extras to make this a very special place. We hope to visit again in the future.
This is a beautiful property, with everything thought through and superbly furnished and equipped. We had three really comfortable nights at the Castle Bothy, and had the bonus of seeing the Aurora Borealis (thanks for the head up Colin!).It really was one of the best places we have stayed in over the last 15 years. Top three!
beautiful barn renovation, exactly as advertised!!! owner went out of his way to stay up late and greet us and show us where to park, as we arrived late at night!!!
The Bothy was amazing! Cosy, clean and views to die for. Our hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful and just really lovely people to chat to. Would totally recommend to stay here, we hope to come back one day.
This was a wondeful stay at the midway point of our 19 day vacation. Loved the views from the bothy while making dinner, eatting breakfast and opening the curtains in the morning. Pheasants wandering outside in the garden commonly. The bed was comfortable and a true king size. Kitchen was well stocked with all basics and several nice additons. This was the most welcoming, comfortable accommodation of our trip and would recommend to anyone!
We had a great stay in this secluded property. It was very quiet and peaceful. Everything was as expected except the clothes washing and drying machine which was not what we are used to but we did get all of our clothes cleaned and dryed. Colin and Penny were very nice and right on property. We would love to go back.
Lovely comfortable accommodation with stunning views
The Bothy is a lovely relaxing place to stay. It has everything you need for a holiday including whisky and the local delicacies called butteries.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful and restful and even has a castle which is a great place to sit and take in the views.
Whether you want to just chill or go exploring the area there is something for everyone.
Colin and Penny, the hosts, are very helpful especially with recommending places to visit in the local area and are always on hand if there are any issues with the accommodation
This is the second time we have stayed and will certainly be going back
If you want an gorgeous view, wildlife galore, a castle to explore, and peaceful ambiance, look no further than The Castle Bothy. Colin warmly greeted us upon arrival and was ready to help us with any questions or needs. This was a last minute booking after an unexpected cancellation and boy are we glad the other owner pulled the rug out because we scored a million dollar gem with Colin & Penny.
The property was perfect. The location was stunning although not too far from local amenities.
The facilities in the property were excellent with everything needed for a break whether exploring the local eateries or cooking in the apartment. The bedrooms were lovely with beautiful views and the bathroom spacious with an excellent shower and bath.
The owners were very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend a stay at this property. I certainly will be going back
This is a beautiful property and highly recommended. Colin and Penny have added so many small touches and amenities that make this so comfortable. We loved looking at the Auchindoun castle with each morning’s expresso. It was very clean and so quiet, we felt like we had it all to ourselves. When we left it brought tears to my wife’s eyes because it was truly a lifelong dream come true. The castle, the wildlife, the secluded getaway in a fairy tale setting that was wonderfully unique.I agree with another reviewer… “I've stayed in a lot of VRBO property's over the years and this is by far one of the best”
We had a wonderful holiday in that cosy holidayflat, which was very tastefully and individually furnished. Everything was of the best quality. When we arrived we got a warm welcome. We found nice little things for a typical scottish breakfast in the kitchen, flowers and a lot of good tips of every kind and for all interests. It was very clean. We were helped whenever we had a question.
We had a wonderful stay! Such a beautiful home and setting. Colin greeted us on arrival making us feel welcome in the very clean, cozy, comfortable and nicely decorated home. Throughout the space Colin and Penny took great thought and care to ensure we felt welcome, providing many extras including whiskey and lovely shortbread cookies, robes and slippers! The view of the castle was lovely, the hillside scattered with sheep and cattle added to the idyllic stay. We were delighted with our time and so appreciative of the hospitality. Thank you Colin and Penny.
The property is unique in that it is so close to the ruins of a castle that you can see it from the window and take a short walk to view it. It is quite isolated, which was perfect for us and we just drank in the beautiful surroundings. Colin and Penny were excellent hosts and provided us with delicious local specialty called a "buttery" along with some butter and jam. They were friendly and gracious and left us with good detailed instructions regarding dos and don'ts. The space itself is as advertised - small but very well appointed. We would love to return for a longer stay to explore the area on foot more!
Merci Colin.
It was just amazing to stay at Bothy Castle in the beautiful surroundings of Speyside / Dufftown. Colin shared with us a very friendly and warm welcome and our group enjoyed very much the cozy and spotless apartment. We immediately felt like being home and even one day of heavy rain could not dim at all our feeling of wellbeing - on the contrary: we took advantage of spending one day "home" in this comfortable apartment (and of the offered local whisky :-)). Thank you so much, dear both! Going to almost the end of the worls is definitely wort it !!

The setting was absolutely incredible - where else can you go to have a castle close by - right out your window. The hills were beautiful and the wild flower garden right outside was so pretty too. The bothy was super clean and comfortable and the hosts provided everything we needed. Peaceful, private and relaxing.
I've stayed in a lot of VRBO property's over the years and this is by far one of the best. Well designed and appointed, with awesome views and close proximity to a great deal of great places to visit! Colin and Penny are awesome hosts and are a wealth of knowledge about the local area as well as Scottish history.....can't recommend their place enough. If you love Scotland as I do, this is a must do location. The Bothy is very comfortable, the right size for two to four and has everything needed for a very comfortable stay. I love to cook and it has everything needed to be at home in the kitchen. The beds are very comfortable, as well as a great living space and bathroom. I was impressed with the detail and care put into this place. There are many venue's within a couple of minutes to a couple of hours from here that are well worth the time spent. Stay, go, see and do....and enjoy! You won't regret the decision made or money spent!
