Region: Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
Town: The coastal town of Berwick has a fascinating history. It is the most northern town in England and as such has been the subject of bitter battles over the centuries, as first English and then the Scottish sought control. In all, it changed owners 14 times before ending up south of the border. The narrow streets are, even now, protected by sturdy walls from the Elizabethan era. The townspeople are proud of the Maltings Arts Centre, which offers a hugely varied programme of music, theatre and other entertainment. Berwick also has fine shops, pubs and restaurants and families will enjoy the leisure centre with its wave pool. There is also first-rate fishing, horse-riding and golf on offer locally. The seaside town of Spittal, which boasts beautiful sandy beaches, is only two miles away and the whole Heritage Coastline is easily accessed.
