About the host
Hosted by Jessica Neild
The cottage has been in the family for many years. It belonged to my late mother, an artist who painted the local area. Her creativity and eye for detail is evident in the cottage that she restored over the years and it's garden which she designed and planted.
After 30 years of living and working in London as a market researcher, I took the plunge and gave it all up to live the dream here in the country. My days are busier than I had imagined, tending to guests, the house, garden as well as my dogs is a full time job, but very rewarding. I love this life; the outdoors, feeling the seasons change, getting my hands dirty in the garden, raising turkeys, horse riding or whatever is my latest craze.

Why they chose this property
History, beauty, charm, cosiness and authenticity.
What makes this property unique
This is a magical place, both the cottage and the surrounding area are steeped in history and beauty which give it an amazing feeling of timelessness and continuity. The local history starts in pre-historic times; Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, to being on the edge of the Viking invasion where the Anglo Saxons of Wessex held them off. There are later Elizabethan manors, and grand estates of 16th and 17th centuries, etc..
The cottage, which is two adjoined cottages, were cowmen's cottages as this was dairy country. They were built for the workers of the local farm in the village back in the 1660's and were purchased from it by my parents 300 years later.
Nowadays there is underfloor heating downstairs downstairs and central heating upstairs, so you can enjoy the history with all the modern comforts you need. Being a listed building, everything is done with conservation in mind and without interfering with the old feel and beauty of the place.
You can walk out of the front garden, through a gate, and into National Trust owned fields full of Sarcen stones, or take the track across the road up to the West Woods. From there you can continue walking to the edge of the downs and see Iron Age Hill Forts. You can walk to Avebury Stone Circle through a Sarcen stone valleys and across the Ridgeway. Or you can drive!
