About this property

The Railway Carriage, Melton Constable, Norfolk

Step back in time to the golden age of steam, dust off your carpet bag, pack an Agatha Christie or two, and let your imagination run wild as you take an adventure aboard your very own Victorian railway carriage. Although fully authentic in nearly every way, this railway carriage now has electric, not gas lighting, and all the creature comforts you will need - just make sure you take your seat in good time before the guard blows his whistle!

Set in a large south facing paddock backed by woodland, this sympathetically restored carriage and adjoining guard's van offers a very unique holiday experience. If you are of a romantic disposition, or a railway buff who mourns the loss of the country railways to Dr Beeching and his axe, this is the ideal holiday destination for you. Converted into comfortable accommodation, you may well imagine you are steaming along. Just sit back, relax and let time stand very still and enjoy the blissful peace of this scenic rural location. A warm and cosy spot for two, the carriage has original flooring and brass fittings, a late Victorian walnut double bed and Tiffany style lamps. A compact fitted kitchen sits at the front end of the carriage, and the bedroom and en-suite shower room are reached at the far end in the guard's van, with the living space running in between.

This is a lovely area for both cycling and walking, with or without your dog. A public footpath runs adjacent to the paddock, parts of which follow the old railway line. The beautiful beaches, marshes and villages that are dotted along the North Norfolk coastline are a mere twenty minute drive away. The Signal Box, which resides nearby, and sleeps two guests, can also be booked if your friends wish to come along as well. The owners are very happy if you would like to bring your horse, which can be kept in the large paddock that surrounds The Railway Carriage (please see Additional Information).

First Class (see what I did there!)
To be honest, I only had modest expectations as this was a late booking and there were only few properties available in the area. However, both my wife and I were stunned by the quality and comfort of this property. Despite going here in the late autumn, the railway carriage was really cosy and warm. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed. Great wi-fi with a Smart TV meant we could watch all our favourite shows on Amazon, Netflix, NowTV etc. The carriage is in a very peaceful setting within an enclosed large paddock; so very dog friendly. I highly recommend that you go to The Sidings bakery in Melton Constable for breakfast pastries that you can enjoy in the paddock with a cup of tea. It is just a short drive to the Jurassic coast for fossil hunting. We have no hesitation in recommending this property; it is amazing.

Quirky, quiet and surprisingly roomy
Lovely quiet location backing onto a wood with a large fenced and gated paddock, dog friendly. There are footpaths across wooded and wild flower lined meadows immediately behind the property. The railway carriage interior is nicely furnished and comfortable whilst retaining many of the original features. The kitchen and bathroom reflect the vintage style however they are reassuringly modern and efficient. The gas central heating, that is carefully hidden away, works extremely well. One of the best aspects of our stay was to sit on the comfortable outdoor furniture, wine glass in hand, watching the sun set with just the sound of birdsong. Although there are several other holiday cottages within the original complex of farm buildings, the railway carriage is some distance away and you are blissfully undisturbed. Very few criticisms. Those above average height will need to duck under some of the doors. If you are 6ft tall you will hit your head if you forget this when entering the bathroom. Should you wish to do more self catering - something we did due to Covid - you may need to bring large oven dishes for cooking for example, as the range of kitchen equipment is limited. Although there is a spacious and good quality microwave, nice plates bowls and cutlery for example, chefs may want to bring their favourite ovenware just in case. Overall, highly recommend.

Fabulous Quirky Accommodation
This very unusual conversion of a 19th century railway carriage to high class accommodation is one of the nicest self catering places I have ever stayed. It is located in a rural setting with a large paddock available for use. The carriage is not huge, but more than adequate for a weeks stay for a couple and 2 large dogs. It has been beautifully converted and has every facility that you need. It is warm, comfortable and cosy. There are lovely walks on the door step and the location is within easy striking distance of the coast and many many other attractions. We are so taken with the carriage, that we will definitely return

Quirky, comfortable and central
If you are exploring the North Norfolk coast this accommodation is for you. From here access is readily made to the whole of the coast in a short journey. Plus you have plenty of lovely scenery and walks on your doorstep. It’s quiet, comfortable and spacious with plenty of room for you and your dog. Chris, the owner, is very helpful and will address any concerns promptly. We had a lovely time there and would certainly consider it again.
