About this property

The Pheasant Lodge - Spacious, luxury home with Garden Views & Log fire

Pheasant Lodge is a beautifully restored Georgian home in the Cartmel Valley, combining period character with modern comfort. Sleeping up to 6 guests, it is a place where families and friends can relax, reconnect and enjoy the best of the Lake District. Think high ceilings, large windows with sweeping views of the gardens, parquet floors, deep sofas and a roaring log fire, all the ingredients for a cosy and memorable escape.

Whether you are gathering for a celebratory meal, curling up for a film night, or simply enjoying the garden views, the lodge gives you space to unwind in comfort. Set at the end of a private drive, it feels wonderfully peaceful, yet is only a short drive from Cartmel’s famous food scene, historic Priory and racecourse, as well as easy access to lakes, fells and heritage sites across the southern Lake District.

The Space

Lounge
A large, welcoming room with garden views from both windows. Deep sofas seat six comfortably, centred around the log burning fire, perfect for chilly evenings. A 60 inch TV with Sky and Netflix is ready for film nights, while a book library offers plenty to dip into. A sofa bed can also be arranged on request.

Dining Room
Dating back to 1700, this is the oldest part of the house and full of character. With parquet floors, mood lighting and a table for six, it is the perfect spot to share meals and conversation. The games cupboard, filled with toys and board games, ensures fun continues long after dinner is cleared away.

Kitchen
A fully refurbished kitchen equipped with everything you need, including oven, grill, microwave, American style fridge freezer with ice, plus an extensive collection of cookware, crockery and glasses for every occasion. A sitting nook overlooks the garden, a lovely place for morning coffee or a quiet drink.

Bedrooms

Master Bedroom: Spacious and elegant, with a super king size bed, period shutters, a decorative arch and an original fireplace now with an electric fire for extra cosiness. From bed you can look out onto the gardens. A seating area and a large wardrobe provide plenty of space to settle in.

Second Bedroom: Can be arranged as either a twin or double. Another generous room with a high ceiling, garden views and a warm, homely feel. Perfect for children, friends or another couple.

Bathroom
Refurbished in 2022, the bathroom combines character with modern comfort. It includes a full size bath, electric shower and large period windows that bring in natural light.

Family Friendly Stays

Families often tell us how well Pheasant Lodge works for children. The dining room games cupboard is stocked with board games, puzzles and toys to keep all ages entertained, while the lounge has Sky and Netflix for family film nights. There is a huge toy selection, kids’ cutlery, and a high chair or cot available on request. Outside, the spacious gardens are perfect for running and playing, with blankets ready for snuggling up afterwards.

The layout of the house makes it easy for families to spread out. Generous bedrooms, a cosy lounge, and plenty of space to come together at mealtimes make it comfortable and relaxed. Parents can unwind knowing everything is in place, from soft bedding and towels to the practical boot room where muddy wellies and walking gear can be left after a day exploring.

Gardens and Outdoor Living

The gardens are one of Pheasant Lodge’s real highlights. From every window you will see greenery, with lawns, trees and hedges that create a feeling of privacy and calm. Guests have three private garden areas to enjoy:

- A hedged front garden that catches the evening sun.

- A side lawn that stretches alongside the house and can be seen from most rooms.

- A private walled garden, perfect for outdoor dining or evening drinks.

With outdoor furniture, a picnic table and an apple tree in bloom, the gardens feel like your own private retreat. They are ideal for summer picnics, morning coffee in the fresh air, or simply taking a quiet moment to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Practical Comforts

Boot Room and Utility
The boot room has space to leave coats, boots and walking gear after a day outdoors. You will also find a washer, dryer, electric drying rack and ironing facilities, plus spare wellies and boots should you need them. A second WC here adds extra convenience.

Accessibility
The lodge is set across the ground floor, with just two small steps inside. Rooms are spacious with wide doorways, and you can drive right up to the house, parking a metre from the front door. Please let us know if you have specific needs, we will be happy to help.

Sustainability
The property is powered by solar panels, and we provide eco friendly hand soaps and washing up liquids by Minimal. Recycling and waste separation facilities are available for guest use, helping to keep your stay as low impact as possible.

Parking
There is private off road parking for up to three cars on the driveway, directly outside the property.

About the host

I’m Hannah and my family and I began refurbishing Pheasant Lodge in 2021. When we first found it, the house was full of character but needed care and modernisation. Our goal was to bring back its charm, keeping the Georgian and Victorian features while adding the comforts guests expect today. I especially love the huge windows that frame the green gardens and the parquet floors in the dining room — they make the lodge feel both grand and homely.

I have family ties in the Lake District and know Cartmel and its surroundings well. This area is full of history, beauty and incredible food, and I’m sure you will fall in love with it just as I have. A welcome pack in the house is filled with local recommendations, but you’ll already find so much to enjoy right on the doorstep. I’m always happy to help with suggestions to make your stay memorable.

Why they chose this property

Pheasant Lodge sits in Field Broughton, a peaceful hamlet in the Cartmel Valley within the Lake District National Park. Quiet and rural, yet close to many of Cumbria’s most loved attractions, it makes the perfect base.

Cartmel, just 2 miles away, is one of the prettiest villages in the northwest and a true foodie destination. The Lake District now has more Michelin stars than anywhere in the UK outside London, with Cartmel at its heart. Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume and Rogan & Co are here, with Heft a short drive away. Alongside fine dining you will find cosy pubs such as The Cavendish, artisan shops and the famous Sticky Toffee Pudding shop. The 12th-century Cartmel Priory is a striking landmark, and Cartmel Racecourse hosts nine meetings a year.

Grange-over-Sands, a short drive away, has supermarkets, cafés, local shops and the renowned Higginsons butchers. Its promenade is perfect for a gentle stroll with views across Morecambe Bay.

The wider area is full of outdoor adventures. At the southern tip of Lake Windermere you can take boat rides, try paddleboarding, go wild swimming or simply relax by the shore. Ferries link Lakeside with Bowness and Ambleside, where you can explore Wray Castle and Brockhole. Coniston is also nearby for water sports and walking. Local favourites include Hampsfell with views over Morecambe Bay, as well as Gummer’s How and High Dam. For keen walkers, the Wainwright peaks are within reach.

History and culture are close too. Visit Holker Hall, Levens Hall, Blackwell or Sizergh Castle, each with beautiful gardens. Families will enjoy the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway and the miniature railway at Millerbeck.

This part of the Lake District combines world-class food, history, family attractions and spectacular scenery. The perfect setting to explore, eat well and return to the comfort of Pheasant Lodge.
