When the Furness Railway was built, Grange-over-Sands, a sleepy fishing community, was converted into a chic Edwardian resort. A traffic-free promenade, lovely ornamental gardens, golf courses, brass band performances, and fantastic bird watching are just a few of the many attractions the town has to offer visitors today. Lake Windermere (8 miles), the charming communities of Bowness-on-Windermere and Hawkshead, and Cartmel, the birthplace of sticky toffee pudding, are all easily accessible by car. Cartmel also boasts a renowned racecourse and the L'Enclume restaurant, which has been ranked as the fourth best restaurant in the UK.
