What a fabulous place and host!
Wow, wow, wow.
A beautiful, four-storey almost ski-chalet style villa, set in the heart of a stunning green island, with panaramic, Atlantic sea views and overlooking one of the area's most popular historic attractions (Christa Rae), with a swimming pool and other entertainment such as pool table, gym and jacuzzi. There are large seating areas and private balconies where families of six can socialise or spend peaceful days apart. Relaxed bars, restaurants, coffee shops and patisseries are just a stone's throw away. This is one stunning villa and location.
To assist other travellers:
The Villa is ~20 years old so don't expect new. A few issues with drainage on our stay (unusually rainy), the host took careful notes and I'm sure will resolve. There's one amazing master bedroom and two much smaller twin rooms - perhaps more laid out for 2 adults and 2 or 3 kids.
The hills are STEEP! Bolt (for taxis) is widely available. Airport-Garajau 1-way 25Eur; 20Eur 1-way to Funchal. My wife and I walked to Funchal, it took 2 hours and isn't for the faint hearted! Garajau beach is rocky. There's a fun cliff lift and a lovely beachside cafe. Take beach footwear and don't expect to build a sandcastle. Evening meals in Garajau are decent but not exceptional (apart from Trainera Grill over the motorway), go to Funchal for more choice and refinement. The local supermarket is about 5 minutes walk, the staff are super friendly and it's open until 10pm.
