Benedict Haid Farm is a family-owned business open, mostly for weddings, for the past 30 years. It features a large, historic 1860s hand-hewn log home on 400-acres, adjoining 10,000 acres of undeveloped corporate property. This is a nice place to get away for a while, or host a small retreat. The nearest commercial building is six miles away. :-)
The property was built by Benedict Haid and was later used as a Girl Scout camp in the mid-20th Century. Benedict Haid Farm is mostly used as a wedding destination. It has two bedrooms and a sun room with queen size sleeper, and 1 1/2 baths. Living room and dining room each with fireplace. Gas heat, A/C, and all modern conveniences like a gas grill. Huge heated attached deck with outside fireplace and hot tub. Free firewood.
There is walking access to a pond, Margaret's Pond, roughly .75 mile from the Haid House. You will have access to the surrounding woods, Margaret's Pond, and the nearby farmland, if you want to make such arrangements. There is a cattle farm on the property that we can arrange for you to see. If you are interested in holding an event, please contact us. The newly-renovated barn is available to be rented for events, as well. It was renovated using logs from historic log cabins formerly located in the South Hills section of Charleston.
Steve and Lee, the caretakers for the Benedict Haid Farm, live 100 yards away and can be contacted when necessary.
Dutch Ridge is a largely undeveloped area and contains some of the highest hills and mountains in this part of West Virginia.

The history of the property is awesome to learn about. Porch and outside fireplace were amazing. Hot tub was clean and very inviting. House was clean and grounds were well kept. We are going to try and stay again.
The fireplace on the porch is where we spent most of our time! The heaters on the porch helped until the fire got nice and warm. The hot tub was a nice way to relax. The house is amazing and we all enjoyed learning about the history. The caretakers were very responsive and checked on us to be sure we had everything we needed!
Beautiful outdoor screened in porch makes this a great weekend getaway to play cards. Do puzzles. Relax. Hike. The home is cozy and extremely cleanI would love to go back again!!!
Beautiful well maintained property in West Virginia. I love looking at the antiques and the mountain drive was very nice. The deck was the best place to unwind. It was in the second week of June but the temperature and low humidity made it perfect for the outdoor fireplace. We loved our time and would recommend the property to anyone that is interested in a tranquil getaway.
Beautiful, cozy, historic cabin in the mountains. Spotlessly clean and comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with anything you’d need for cooking and food prep. Plenty of towels in the bathrooms. Antique decor was exceptional. Bedding was cozy and comfortable. View from the porch was gorgeous. The caretaker was friendly and visited within an hour of our arrival to make sure everything was in order. Special thank you to the owner, as there was a freak snowstorm which prevented us from leaving when we were supposed to, but he was super accommodating and concerned about our safety. It was much appreciated!
Storms caused a power outage, AC was not working. The owner as well as Steve (works on the property) communicated with us and also made the VRBO comfortable with portable AC units until the main AC could be fixed. Steve was friendly (so was the AC guy) and easy to talk with. Thank you everyone!
My sister and I wanted to take our Mom away for a girls weekend but wanted to stay close to home. Haid Farmhouse is only about an hour to our north and after reading all the reviews we couldn’t wait to get there. We had some local flooding in our area and had to leave our home early so that we wouldn’t get flooded in. I contacted Mr Pepper asking if we could check in a couple hours early. He checked with the property managers who said yes. Our stay was amazing. We enjoyed the rich history of the farm house and especially enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub then cozying up to a fire in the indoor fireplace. This place is very clean and had everything we needed. Thank you for allowing us to stay we can’t wait to come back!
The property sits on a beautiful hillside with plenty of privacy. The frog pond was very active and a bonus! The house gives plenty of room to spread out if needed and the fireplaces were nice to light up at night. The hot tub was clean, I cannot stress this enough, it was clean to a professional standard. The floors were tidy and my socks did not turn black after 5 minutes, although I normally wear slippers. The kitchen was maintained and stocked with cookware and flatware. Bring your own spices if you are dependent on them. The freezer and fridge are separate and large. There's no internet up here except for being on the Wi-Fi which is free. My husband and I felt right at home here and we're definitely able to relax. We also needed to modify our reservation and had no problem doing so with the very communicative owners. I'm already recommending this visit to our friends and family and now I recommend it to you!
We had the honor of spending Thanksgiving at this beautiful, remote cabin. The drive is breath taking - go slow! The home is like stepping into the past. We absolutely loved it! The kitchen is stocked exceedingly well!! Thank you! The period furnishings and decor are wonderful. Great descriptions on personal photos and news articles. And the porch - oh my word! Unfortunately it was cold, rainy and windy the m as jority of our trip bu the last fill day we were able to light the fire and relax in thst amazing space. We had one little bobble which the caretaker very promptly took care of. If you are looking for quiet, peaceful beauty this is your next get away! We traveled to the New River Gorge Bridge and the Lost world Caverns - despite the long drive I would highly recommend both!
Beautiful area with a wonderful historical home. The home was decorated in wonderful antiques - beds were really comfortable! We had good cell service at the home and the tv is set up to cast from your phone which was a wonderful touch for rainy days. We loved the screened in porch area with hot tub. Loved the history and all of the local wildlife. The scenery was breathtaking! Hosts were very accommodating and prompt. Bathrooms were immaculate. The towels provided were awesome - spa quality with stretch to them. Trust me, you'll just have to try them out for yourselves. LOL Kitchen was amazing with restaurant sized stand alone refrigerator and a separate stand alone upright freezer. My husband LOVED the outdoor grill.
We did pack a cooler with snacks and salads and breakfast items, drinks, etc., and would suggest you do the same as back up on days when you don't feel like traveling. Although geographically, there are many places to eat and grocery stores available, there are no short trips due to the winding roads. The home is in the hills/mountains and the roads to get there, although clearly marked and paved, are very, very narrow, with hair pin turns - normally without guard rails. You don't necessarily need 4wd, but a smaller, compact vehicle is the way to go because in many spots, it is pretty much one lane traffic and there is no shoulder to pull off on.
Over all, we truly enjoyed ourselves and will be coming back.
The location was amazing. House was beautiful full of lots of historic items. Hot tub on the porch was wonderful to relax in every evening. Beautiful sunsets every night.
We were there over the weekend of July 1-4th, 2022. We found the property to be exactly as described. It is an older home that was built in the 1870's - and so our expectations were based on that. However, the kitchen is very modern - with all the amenities we could ask for. We cooked many of our meals here and enjoyed the large deck. The caretaker - Steve Jones - came over and made sure that we were comfortable and answered all questions. We did have an issue with the hot tub overheating, but he was right there and was able to help us within 20 minutes. The drive up from I-79 is a little scary - but as long as you go slow, it was fine. We saw lots of deer along the way. I would highly recommend this property if you are looking for a quite and peaceful time.

Disliked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication
Old cabin in a very isolated area
There were some communication problems that were resolved, and there was some cleaning issues( dirty fireplaces, weird unexplained stuff on the headboard of one of the beds) no supplies to use the fireplaces and when asked, told they didn't have any matches so we had to go out and get Firestarter. NOTHING near by if you need groceries or supplies. But, with all that said, the place is quaint, comfortable, away from everything ( no wifi or cell service) and peaceful. The hot tub was amazing. The stove and oven are gas, so be forewarned! The appliances are commercial grade. I feel we should have been refunded some of the cleaning fee we were charged since it was not fully cleaned on our arrival, but hey...what can you do.
Beautiful location up a narrow twisty road. Very fine home with modern kitchen and bathrooms. The best equipped kitchen regarding pots, pans, and cutlery we have ever experienced! Great dining room table (our number one requirement for family games). Awesome screened porch! Really only two bedrooms. Rather overloaded with decorative kitsch.
We stayed 9 days and loved every minute of it. We felt safe and very welcome. We built fires every night in the multiple fireplaces. We had a few guests come visit us, they were just as pleased as we were.
We will be going back. Thank you Mr Pepper and Steve.
Beautifully restored log home hidden away in the hills. Great covered enclosed porch with fireplace and ample wood for the brisk fall evenings. Hot top to relax after exploring the property. The home contained all the amenities we needed for our weekend away.. A wonderful location to unplug and unwind!
The property said three bedrooms, one outcove had a couch with fold out bed . Hot tub was not functional and tv works if you dont mind lines.

About the host
Hosted by Owner / Property Manager
I purchased the Benedict Haid Farm property in 1986 and oversaw the restoration of the house and grounds. This house has been a labor of love for most of my adult life. I am proud of what we offer and the positive comments received.
Why they chose this property
The Benedict Haid Farm offers a rare opportunity to spend time in an authentic, well-maintained log home, modified to provide comfort and utility on a private mountain setting just 20 (paved) miles from three interstate highways.
What makes this property unique
Huge attached, screened-in deck (48' x 36') and an outside-facing fireplace with auxiliary gas heat makes for a wonderful outdoor experience. Two more fireplaces inside.
Water in the hot tub is drained and refilled, with no chemicals, for each rental.
