About this property

Toll Bridge Cottage

Finest Retreats are pleased to present Toll Bridge Cottage, a unique, characterful cottage alongside the Mawddach estuary. Stay in the quaint toll keeper's cottage, which oozes old world charm with amazing waterside views.

The bridge was built in 1879 as a replacement for a ferry crossing and the cottage is said to have been added to around the 1900s. The cottage can sleep up to two guests, with a kitchen, dining and lounge nestled around the cosy log burner, perfect for an evening in around the fire. There's also a shower room, and double bedroom with striped wooden walls all around which just adds to the character and charm.

Outside enjoy expansive and uninterrupted views on the terrace – the ideal place to relax, watch the local wildlife and immerse in the breath-taking scenery. And of course, you can also watch the occasional car, bike or group of walkers go by during the day and crossing the historic bridge.

The cottage is well located for visiting guests to explore the stunning scenery of the area. The adjacent cycle track, the Mawddach trail, that used to be the old railway track is perfect for strolls as well as bikes. Two MiRiDER e-bikes are available for hire at the cottage, so if you fancy a ride and to see the sights from a different point of view, then please contact us to book ahead of arrival.

Slightly further afield is the seaside town of Barmouth that includes stunning sandy beaches, and the traditional market town of Dolgellau offering a range of artisan shops and weekly farmers market is only two miles away. The foothills of the majestic Cadir and Idris are on the near horizon tempting you to explore their magnificence and beauty, and the beast that is Snowdonia is just a short drive away.

Logs for the woodburner are not included, but you can pre-order logs at time of booking @ £6 per bag (which includes kindling and fire lighters), or they can be purchased directly from the toll keepers.

It was just brilliant. Would stay again without hesitation.

Self catering bare essentials provided but good shop 2 miles away in town. Fabulous historic and homely place to stay and dog friendly too. Great spot for walking & hiking and exploring a beautiful corner of North Wales.

Cosy cabin on a bridge!

The setting of the wee cottage at the end of the toll bridge made for a quirky experience and the wider setting of hills and the estuary was beautiful. It was perfect.

Wonderful place

Our second visit to the Toll Bridge House, this time for two weeks, and it didn't disappoint. The accommodation was lovely and clean, with welcoming croissants and Welsh cakes. We were a little concerned when storm Amy came, but nothing to worry about. The Toll Bridge staff are really friendly and helpful, and this year we watched the swimmers taking part in the Barmouth Hurly Burly. All in all a fantastic place to stay. Hope to be back in 2026. The settee is a bit low and uncomfortable. But we put a couple of pillows on there to make it a little better. Otherwise, all great.

Perfect: beautiful location, unique property, dog friendly, decent WiFi and convenient parking.

The location was stunningly beautiful. The property was quirky (quite unique), warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean. WiFi worked perfectly and parking was very convenient. Plus they allow dogs.

What a gem!

We loved everything about Toll Bridge Cottage. It is in a beautiful setting, deceptively spacious and so well equipped, clean and comfortable ! The owners / toll keepers are very friendly and helpful. The history of the bridge is interesting and there is well researched information about it in the cottage. The nearby inn is a bonus and serves delicious food. There are beautiful walks right from the doorstep - we can’t recommend a stay here highly enough!

A little gem

Primarily location, and the cottage is perfect for two, well equipped and comfortable, with excellent wifi. Toll Bridge staff were helpful and friendly. Bed was comfortable but we found the duvet too heavy for our comfort. Vacuum cleaner could do with some attention.

Fabulous position. Very Helpful assistance. No manual for dishwasher which had a weird method of setting and needed salt. The minutest thimble bottle of washing up liquid , hand wash, etc seemed very petty for our use. So had to buy on day 1. Shame as otherwise we really enjoyed our stay.

Unique, quirky fun

The accommodation provides all that you need for a cozy, comfortable stay. All mod cons in a beautiful area. Although the weather did not cooperate the outside lounge area provides excellent views of the estuary

Location was excellent, lovely little place to stay.

Pub was within walking distance of the property and food was wonderful and staff were very friendly. Cottage is a wonderful base for walking and we were incredibly lucky with the weather. Toll bridge staff are amazing and so helpful and knowledgeable. Parking could be an issue at times but other than that, everything was great

Location is dreamy

Loved seeing the birdlife through the window and the wonderful views in all weather Please provide the basics in the kitchen - nobidy wants to have to go out to buy salt, oil, coffee, tea, sugar. The best self-catering places usually provide these as a default... Pain au chocolat was lovely touch wldnt bother with the welshcskes haha otherwise we loved everything. Wonderful relaxing place to chill.

Cutest place ever!

Amazing location: right on the Mawddach trail, close to Barmouth, Dolgellau, Fairbourne, yards from the very nice George III pub, less than a mile from Penmaenuchaf Hall (fancy dining - go on Sunday for 3 courses + appetisers and bread, almost affordable at £38). Really enjoyed being part of the daily life of the toll bridge, listening to the comings and goings of locals and tourists. It's not loud, or disruptive, just a gentle routine that's fun to observe. The toll keepers are lovely too. The cottage is spotlessly clean and very, very well-equipped. We lacked nothing. The appliances are all well maintained too - hob, oven, fridge and dishwasher all do a grand job. The heating is effective, even though we were there for a particularly chilly long weekend in April we were never cold. The log burner added to the cosiness. We didn't get a chance to sit on the terrace due to the cold weather but we did check it out and dreamt about coming back in warmer weather just to sit there gazing out over the water. The best bit of the cottage is the views - looking out across the water (upstream and down), watching the geese, herons, waders...imagining that we can see otters (we couldn't, but we really, really wanted to). Booking and access was all very slick, clear instructions made it all straightforward. There's a folder full of manuals for appliances and helpful information about the place. Some fantastic historical detail about the bridge too. Really didn't want to leave

Toll Cottage

Friendly & helpful staff at the toll booth. Stunning location. The property is pet friendly. Unfortunately this meant that my clothes are now covered in dog hair. The free parking is not a dedicated car park for the cottage- guests are directed to a public car park which is full at peak holiday times.

Comfortable, well equipped, clean, cosy

Lovely waterside spot, quirky, historically interesting, enhanced by the lovely relationship we had with the toll collectors - they were all friendly, helpful and charming Just one very picky comment - the duvet is very heavy! (We had lovely weather!)

Lovely accommodation in a beautiful setting.

Beautiful setting. Good amenities It is what it is, but it's a shame that it isn't a little larger, consequently it's a little expensive for its size. Furnishings could be more cosy and comfortable.

Unique accommodation and location

The location and accommodation was beautiful. We enjoyed the local walks, day trips to great little trains and Sunday Lunch at the very local pub. The toll keepers were friendly and helpful. The house was well appointed and there aren’t any serious changes necessary. We did find the duvet a little heavy for August but the “spare” on the wardrobe was thinner for subsequent nights. The hoover provided was also underpowered - having a dog we are used to hoovering daily to keep on top of his hair.
