Great location for exploring Hilo, Volcanoes and Pahoa area. We stayed a week and enjoyed staying here. We’d stay here again. Only complaint is the lack of hot water for showers as the water was just lukewarm.

The coqui are LOUD! The bed was fairly hard. The shower was tiny with only luke warm water. Alex was a great host, communicated well and even walked to the end of the road and helped us find his place in the dark. If you’re only planning to sleep here it’s ok (be mindful of the first 2 sentences). Otherwise “lounging comfortably” is not an option - bed and 2 dining chairs. Location was good. Not too far away from Volcanoes NP, and near enough to Hilo.

Peaceful

The biggest problem was finding the accommodation. Should be listed under Pohaku Street. If Alex didn't take my phone calls we would never have found it. Maps lead us to a totally different address. The renters were excellent.

I did not like the add saying there was a hot tub - there was NOT! and I did not like having to download an app to locate the host - which did NOT work on my older phone OR computer. Disappointed. false advertising. Very frustrating because we we not sure of getting in or anything in a remote island setting. The room and host were OK once we were there.

Pros: I liked the location. There was easy access to Puna, Volcano NP, and Hilo. The owner gave me a 5 minute spiel on the property. Everything was in working order. Cons: I stayed at 4 different VRBO properties during my stay on the Big Island. All property owners except this one provided directions, check in instructions and check out instructions. You won't get that. And the directions are not intuitive at all. So I will do the property owner's job for him and hopefully save you frustration after a long flight or drive. When you travel south on highway 130 turn right on Pohaku Drive. You want to take an IMMEDIATE right (20 feet after the turn on Pohaku Dr.). It is a gravel and worn out asphalt driveway that turns into dirt. The driveway will curve to the left. The first left is his house. Don't turn there. Keep going. The drive takes a sharp left turn to another property. Straight in front of you are carports. Park to the left of the carports behind his house. Walk back down the driveway to his house. Hopefully he his home. If not.... and this brings me to my second con, There is no lock on the door to your room. Go back to your car. Walk down 4 or 5 steps. Look to your right. Walk up a flight of steps to a sliding glass door. It should be open (no lock). That is your room. Enjoy your stay. There is very little communication from this owner.
