There were good things about this property, such as the space. We had our rather large family over one day and there was no problem accommodating everyone. The kids had a grand time playing tennis and running about with a football. However, there were a myriad problems starting with no hot water for about 24 hours. The host was quick enough with communication and had the problem fixed the day after we arrived (a lovely young man came to help us, and also brought extra things the house was lacking), but he was slow to believe that there was an issue to begin with. The house is run on timed immersion, so water heats in the a.m. and p.m., but if you need to do dishes in the middle of the day you are out of luck. The description of the property is old, and you no longer have access to the acreage mentioned when we booked. There is also construction directly behind the property (which started just before 7 a.m. 6 days a week), and with the hot summer we had to have the windows open in order to not suffocate. That meant a layer of dust and grit over everything, including inside the suitcases. If it were cool this wouldn’t be an issue, and the underfloor heating seems lovely. The showers were quite mouldy and we had to buy bleach spray to clean two of them. There was a leak in one shower that rained upon my mother’s head downstairs, but that was on the last day we were there - I’m sure it will be fixed for the next tenant. Luxurious 30 years ago, but needs updates.

Elgin House was beautiful and well situated to enjoy Malahide and Dublin and especially close to Dublin Airport! All in all, it was a fun stay!I do wish, however, that we had been informed about all the housing being developed and engulfing the 22 acres mentioned in the promotion. Initially that was a disappointment upon arrival, but we got over it. Before arrival, I envisioned 22 acres of space and deer in the view! Some thoughts to make it even better include:The house is large and comfortable. The furnishings/upholstery, especially in the conservatory, in immediate need of refreshing. Or slipcovers. Perhaps updated sofas and chairs in the kitchen keeping room as well?We never watched TV. Instructions on how to turn on the tv would have been helpful. The kitchen could have included more dish towels, small juice glasses, directions to the convection heating elements and various coffee makers and appliances. Perhaps more dishes as well - as we hand washed dishes and silverware by hand to keep up with the need.Wash cloths and small soap bars in the bathrooms would have been nice. I did not notice standing electric fans in the bedrooms or common areas. Note: We were lucky the temperature was cool and we did not need them…I am sure the four other guests with me might have additional suggestions. I will forward them on to you if they do. I am returning to Dublin in 2028 and would lease this property again!Thank you for asking. Donna

This property left us feeling unsettled for our short stay there. We originally booked for 3 nights, but due to arriving early the first day, we were told we could book an additional night, so that we could check in to the property early. So we only slept in this property 3 nights, but paid for 4 nights. On arrival 2 of the bedrooms had mouse droppings on the beds, and headboards. Obviously this is a health hazard & we had a toddler with us. Thankfully the host responded quickly & assured us the home would be deep cleaned, it was then we noted more droppings in a 3rd bedroom & reported that. So on our first night there we left the property for a while, so it could be ‘deep’ cleaned, as stated by the host. On our return 2/3 bedrooms the droppings seen were gone. However the 3rd bedroom still had droppings. We had to sleep in that room that evening. Very unsettling. The following day the host had the cleaners return again. Admittedly apologies were given, but it took 2 nights out of our 3 night stay for this issue to be resolved. We are not even 100% sure the home was deep cleaned the first night, or even the bedding changed. There was no reassurance of this. Especially when we spotted the decorative throw from one of the beds, that had mouse droppings on it, thrown into a cupboard in the main living area of the home. Obviously we have reported all of this with VRBO & have photo proof of the mouse droppings. All we have been offered is 250 refund.

A piece of paradise just north of Dublin

Elgin is a stunning holiday rental which would be suitable for up to ten people, so the two of us and our two dogs were easily accommodated and were very comfortable and hugely relaxed. The extensive grounds were perfect for playing with our boys and Jonothan provided helpful instructions for closing the gates to Elgin as one of our two rescue dogs is prone to “a detailed and wide-ranging exploration” of his environs Closing the gates meant that Elgin’s gardens and the large lawns in front of the tennis court were all safely enclosed, and we could stop fretting about Freddie and enjoy games with them both, so thank you Jonothan, your help was invaluable and much appreciated The house was well equipped with every kitchen appliance you could need, including a dishwasher, and a washing machine and separate tumble dryer.A small library of books was also available and if books aren’t your thing, the house also had full Sky television enabling us to watch our usual UK news and other BBC and Channel 4 output.A huge amount of storage space is available which would make the house particularly suitable for, e.g. a long-term rental for work colleagues, especially as it’s only ten minutes’ drive from Dublin airport and its proximity to Dublin city centre.Thank you Duchamp Properties…we loved Elgin and hope to return
