Located on Gibson Point peninsula at 481 Moran Crossing, Milam, Texas, just north of the Pendleton Bridge, this historic mid-century modern cabin named "Crappie House" is perfectly situated near prime bass fishing and the famous “Chicken Coop” crappie fishing areas. Set on a 2-1/2 acre property with 650 feet of lake frontage, the 2-Bedroom 1-bath cabin sleeps 6 (4 adults max) and boasts a "million-dollar view" from the spacious deck that opens to the dining area and great room. Accommodations include a bedroom with a queen bed and a second bedroom with a queen bed and twin bunk beds. Amenities include a charcoal grill, a 52" TV with internet service, free wifi, and a well-appointed kitchen with full-size range, refrigerator-freezer with ice maker, microwave, dishwasher, and toaster oven. The bathroom has a shower stall, toilet, and single sink. There is a washer and dryer. Linens are furnished for kitchen, bed and bath. Added bonuses are the semi-private boat launch on an adjacent cove, a large fire pit with wood, a tree swing, a screened dock house with eating and conversation areas, and a fish-cleaning station on a fishing dock. Crappie House is perfect for serious fishermen, families, and couples looking for a quiet, fairly secluded get-away. Nearby there is a small market and grill that sells fishing supplies, licenses and gasoline. (Louisiana and Texas licenses are accepted on all of Toledo Bend). The town of Hemphill, Texas is a 20-minute car ride away, and has a grocery store, restaurants, ATMs and various shops. Likewise, there are the same offerings across the Pendleton Bridge in Louisiana, about 25 minutes away. For photos and recent news, please see our Facebook page, "Crappie House at Gibson Point". Due to HOA rules, boats must be trailered when not in use and no fireworks are permitted.

Peace & Quiet, Margaritas, and Catfish!
It took us a couple times around the dead end to find the little place tucked on the slope but we finally did and got settled in. Id recommend a front porch light with a sensor on it, or one of those lights that activate when it gets dark up by the entrance just in case slow pokes like us arrive after dark. The little place is nice and cozy and the beds were nice and soft. Spare no expense when it comes to the sheets! We spent the majority of the time down on the dock no matter how windy or cold it might have been, and it was both! We caught two turtles and three Catfish on night two as well as some rain. After realizing that we forgot some of the more needed items for Breakfast, Lunch, And dinner we headed to town and had dinner and Margaritas at El Patio...FYI-The Blueberry Margarita was bigger than the catfish we caught, but be prepared to wait a while as the staff was a little slow. We picked up groceries, and more bait and headed back dockside to try our hand at some more fishing. Spent the final night listening to pine cones bounce off the tin roof and indulging in a little WWE action. This was a much needed breath of fresh air and the perfect place to accomplish some peace and quiet, margaritas, and Catfish! Our thanks to the owners of the Crappie House for providing us with the perfect get away from the big city! We will be back...when it's a little warmer! :-)

About the host

Hosted by Carol Hester

Host profile image
Carol and Tom have been married for 40 years and have lived the majority of that time in Lake Charles, Louisiana. They now live in the Dallas area to be near their two grown children and their families. The Hesters are happy to preserve this historic property — one of the first built at Toledo Bend Reservoir — and to share it with you.

Why they chose this property

Crappie House offers a unique opportunity to stay in a mid-century modern cabin and to live the good life as you lounge on the balcony or dine over the water in the screened dock house. And of course, there is the world-class fishing, not to mention the large outdoor area, perfect for creating memories with your family or friends.

What makes this property unique

Few properties offer the acreage, accessibility to the lake, and the amenities that Crappie House has to offer, including a semi-private boat launch, large fire pit and screened dock house with sitting and dining areas. Located just north of the Pendleton Bridge, Crappie House is situated at nearly the midpoint of the lake, allowing access to both the north and south ends. Guests may fish off the dockhouse balcony or along the seawall (be aware of large boulders along the sea wall and of the slippery seawall). For swimming, there is a smooth sandbar in the cove perfect for floating and kids' swimming -- go out from the launch to the white pole. It is usually 2-4 feet deep.
