Historical

These vacation rental apartments are in Jerome Wheeler’s carriage house built in 1888.

A second cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jerome Byron Wheeler served during the Civil War, surviving to marry Harriet Macy Valentine (whose family founded Macy’s department store) in 1870. By 1879 he had become the president and a major shareholder of R. H. Macy and Company after the deaths of both its male heirs.

In 1882, Wheeler and his wife visited Colorado, seeking relief for Harriet’s severe bronchitis. They visited Manitou Springs, as it was famous for its mineral waters. In 1883, they built a summer home here, naming it ‘Windemere.’ This sat where the Post Office is currently located.

Soon, Wheeler began hearing reports of silver strikes in Aspen, and he purchased interests in promising mines. Although his time at New York City's most prosperous department store produced years of record sales and profits, Jerome Wheeler’s ambitions were shifting toward Colorado. Wheeler left his position and sold his shares in Macy’s in 1888.

Wheeler became involved in numerous mining ventures in Leadville and Aspen. He organized the Aspen Smelting Company, and built a mountain tramway to bring ore down the mountain to the smelter. He was president of the Croseus Gold Mining and Milling Company, as well as the Rock Hill Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company in Leadville. He was a partner in a marble quarry, and was president of the Grand River Coal and Coke Company. Before long, he was phenomenally wealthy.

He built two of downtown Aspen's landmarks; the Wheeler Opera House and the Hotel Jerome, putting nearly one million dollars in each. These are both thriving today. He built the first bank in Aspen, as well as a large residence, but never lived in the home. Known as the Wheeler-Stallard House, it currently serves as home to the Aspen Historical Society.

All told, he invested nearly $6 million into developing Aspen, and is remembered fondly as an icon there as a result.

Jerome Wheeler became a director of the Colorado Midland Railroad when it was organized in 1885, and brought rail connections to both Aspen and Manitou Springs. He and Colorado Springs railroad tycoon James John Hagerman invested over $100,000 in the extension of the Colorado Midland Railroad to the western slope, the first standard gauge railroad to cross the Continental Divide. Some of the rail beds and tunnels for this railroad can still be seen in various places around town and along US-24 west of Manitou Springs.

He started the Manitou Mineral Water Company, which was very popular back east and was even served at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

He invested in the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, a cog railway that still transports passengers to the top of Pikes Peak.

As he had in Aspen, Wheeler also built the first bank in Manitou Springs, the Wheeler Bank. This yellow brick building sits at the east end of downtown.

Downtown sits a triangle of land with the clock donated by Wheeler to the town. His wife had been intrigued by a similar clock in Italy, so he spent $3600 to provide one for Manitou Springs.

In 1892, Wheeler became embroiled in the first of a series of lengthy and costly lawsuits over one of his silver mines. The combination of the judgments and the Panic of 1893, resulting in the crash of the value of silver, cost Jerome Wheeler nearly his entire fortune.

Wheeler's mining company laid off all its employees. His banks failed and closed for two years, but Wheeler paid his depositors every dollar and they lost nothing.

Manitou Springs continued to benefit from Wheeler’s largess, even after his fortunes had dwindled. He contributed $50,000 toward the construction of Manitou Avenue and outfitted a volunteer fire company. In 1913, after a devastating flood, he gave $10,000 to the city for emergency repairs.

Jerome Wheeler spent most of his remaining years at Windemere until his death on December 1, 1918.

New York. Aspen. Manitou Springs.

Jerome Wheeler was successful wherever he went, and he and Harriet certainly could have lived wherever they desired. But ultimately, they chose Manitou Springs as their home. Come to Manitou Springs and see what they discovered. This is a great place to be.

History of Windemere

Jerome Wheeler’s Windemere estate in Manitou Springs included an elaborate conservatory, this carriage house, billiard rooms and two bowling alleys. Roses for the Cliff House Hotel were grown in the conservatory and placed on guest's pillows each night.

After the death of the Wheelers (Harriet died in 1916), the estate was sold off, and the Wheeler residence was demolished for a hotel. The post office was built on the site in 1940.

The carriage house was divided into seven apartments over100 years ago. The building fell vacant in the 1980's. We purchased the building in 1993 with the intention of developing it into a bed and breakfast. Ultimately, due to the constraints of time, money, full-time jobs, and kids to raise, the bed and breakfast was never realized. As they say, "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans."

Come see why this property has now reached its highest and best use, over 135 years in the making. We think Jerome Wheeler would be pleased with what has become of his carriage house.

Perfect Place to Celebrate a big birthday

Kris and Tim made us feel so special by recognizing our special birthday celebration. The house was as beautiful as the photos and the location couldn't been more perfect. We walked downtown Manitou and enjoyed all the shops in town. Dinner was only minutes away in downtown Colorado Springs. We will definitely come back. I highly recommend this beautiful VRBO.

Great hosts; ideal setting!

We had a wonderful romantic getaway at The Carriage House. The suite of rooms was clean and comfortable and the bottle of wine was a nice touch. The grounds are well kept and the view from the walkout balcony is wonderful. There's lots to do and see within walking distance. We will definitely return!

A beautiful home with space and privacy for everyone.

We rented all three units for our family and it was a perfect set up. We gathered together for dinners and games downstairs and could retreat to our own beautiful apartments later. The location is perfect! Great shopping, restaurants and attractions are within walking distance or a short drive. The owners are a lovely couple who will take care of any needs you may have or answer any questions. We look forward to going back.

Wonderful property owned by wonderful folks in a fantastic location!

Thanks so much, Kris and Tim! Our family reunion was made even better at your location! We had everything we needed and then some. We had only one issue (the dish tv box went out) and yet you had it fixed on a holiday within a very short period of time! Thanks also for the kids goodies and wine !!!

Tim and Kris have made a beautiful getaway in a perfect location. We spent Christmas in the house and when we arrived, we were surprised to find a Christmas tree, decorated and all, plus cookies for the kids, wine for us and a treat for the dog. We loved the house so much that we booked an extra day. Thank you, Tim and Kris, for making such a magical holiday for us and the kids!

Lovely in Manitou Springs!

Our family of 3 enjoyed an absolutely lovely stay at the Carriage House! Our beautiful and well-appointed 2nd floor apartment was so comfortable and we were blissfully at ease there. We greatly appreciated the attention to detail in each room (and balcony!) plus special welcoming gifts that Kris and Tim provided. We are also so thankful to Tim for assisting us when the battery died on our car! Absolutely above and beyond. Thank you for a truly wonderful vacation rental experience!

Felt just like home.

I needed a place within walking distance to all, with all the comforts of home including a full kitchen, bath and laundry. This vacation rental met all my needs and exceeded my expectations; large, comfortable, well decorated and beautifully maintained. It is a combination of old-world charm and modern amenities. Loved having the balcony and a private place to park. Tim and Kriss were accommodating and thoughtful. They greeted me personally with a bottle of wine and gave a quick tour to help me settle in. Traveling alone, I felt safe knowing they lived on site. I plan to return annually and recommend this property to all.

Carriage House could not have been any better.

Our family went to Manitou Springs for our son's wedding. We decided to rent the week before for some bonding time. This house could not have been any better. Not sure where to begin. CLEAN, well decorated, washer, dryer, full kitchen, views, KING beds, porches, right across the street is park for little kids and even us. Walking distance to shops, games, food. Plenty of sights that kept us busy every day. Then to come back to the house that has 3 separate condos. Perfect. 5 stars for sure. Hope to go back.

Fantastic find in downtown Manitou Springs!

My friends and I rented the entire house for our Pikes Peak marathon weekend getaway and we were blown away by the Carriage House and its convenience to our activities! Each wing in the house is beautifully decorated, so very comfortable, and thoroughly stocked. There are so many amenities and Kris and Tim go out of their way to make sure you are in need of nothing! Each wing has its own balcony or patio that you can have your coffee on while looking out over the beautiful landscape of the Springs. You are located right downtown within walking distance of most everything. Plenty of good restaurants and activities close by. We were so impressed by the hospitality shown by the owners. They provided for us a basket of snacks and drinks and even brought down a platter of meats and cheeses and fruit for after our race that weekend! I would love to stay here again and recommend it to anyone else looking for a beautiful place to rent in the Springs! Thank you again Tim and Kris for a wonderful weekend!

Very hospitable

Owners were so gracious and welcoming and met us on checkin and accommodated both early checkin and late checkout due to our situation. They encouraged us to stay for the Mardi Gras parade/celebration in town (we had no idea it was taking place prior to arrival) and assisted us with the street parking options/parking pass/metered parking (free first 3hrs and free 5p-7a). Kitchen was well-equipped and it's nice to have your own laundry machine/dryer (and detergent provided). Jacuzzi tub and king bed were nice. They also provided a white noise maker to dampen footsteps upstairs (there was a large family walking around in shoes on second floor). Would love to book the first floor again in the summer to take advantage of the patio and sitting on the porch. We had ample space for 2 crated dogs, 2 children, 3 adults. Very convenient to be located walking distance to park, arcade, restaurants, downtown, etc. and only 20min from Colorado Springs/Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and dinosaur museum, even closer to Cave of the Winds, Rainbow falls.

We rented all three units for a weekend wedding and the property did not disappoint! The accommodations were lovely, the home was very clean and well-appointed. Upon arrival, we found a large bottle of wine and wine glasses set out for us, in each unit! We brought takeout back one afternoon and sat outside on the large, private side patio. When we prepared for the wedding, we found an iron as well as a steamer, which proved very helpful! The proximity to everything in town and to the hotel was especially enjoyable - very walkable and cozy!

Great stay at a beautifully restored Carriage House

Our extended family of 8 seniors rented all three apartment units and had a wonderful stay. The apartments were very beautifully and comfortably furnished with well stocked and equipped kitchens. Avoiding stairs for two of the three apartments was very helpful with our group. The location, just off Manitou Avenue and in front of the park was idyllic and convenient. Our hosts, Kris & Tim, were outstanding and responsive and made the whole experience fabulous!

Family vacation

My husband and I have stayed here twice before. When planning an extended family vacation, we knew the house would be perfect for this. We were able to rent all 3 units and have access to the entire house and patio/porch’s. It was a perfect location for our parents (in their 70’s) to have privacy within their own unit, or join the rest of us, when they felt like it. The location was perfect for the younger cousins (12-14 y/o) to play in the park while the parents enjoyed the front porch. It is also the perfect location to visit all of the local shops and arcade, but return back to the house whenever we wanted. Third time was a charm and it won’t be the last (from Wichita, Ks and Richmond, Va)

Thanksgiving in Manitou

The house was perfect for us! We loved how we could easily walk the main street of town right from the front door. Same for the shuttle stops.. I don't think we could have stayed any closer to all of our activities. Our families did the cave dwellings, Incline, Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Cave of the Winds, Cog to Pikes Peak, Olympic Museum, and Seven Falls. The farthest we had to drive was about 20 minutes. Kris answered all of my questions during our stay. Everyone loved the home and Manitou Springs.

Family trip to celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

We rented all three apartments in the house for our family get together. Each family had our own space yet the apartments are laid out so we could open our doors to the interior hallway and have social time together. The units are extremely well equipped and immaculate. With three generations to entertain, the location is perfect for access to the many activities in the area.
