About this property
Charming thatched cottage sleeping eight in Minehead’s Old Town
The Old Sweet Shop is a characterful, thatched cottage full of warmth, history and personality. Sleeping up to eight guests, it’s a wonderfully sociable place to stay, ideal for families and friends who enjoy spending time together in a relaxed, comfortable setting. The cottage also benefits from private on-site parking for two cars, making arrivals and day trips easy and stress-free.
At the heart of the cottage is the large kitchen and dining room — a light, welcoming space designed for shared meals, conversation and long, unhurried evenings. The farmhouse table easily seats everyone, making it perfect for group breakfasts, celebratory dinners or simply gathering with a glass of wine after a day out. The kitchen is well equipped for proper cooking and feels very much like the centre of the home.
The living room is cosy and inviting, with exposed beams, thick stone walls and a wood-burning stove that makes it especially appealing in cooler months. It’s a space to slow down, read, chat or enjoy a film together at the end of the day.
The cottage sleeps eight across four individually styled bedrooms, each with its own character. From the four-poster king room to the light-filled twin and the king bedroom with roll-top bath, the layout works well for mixed groups who want both privacy and comfort. Quality mattresses, good storage and solid construction ensure a restful night’s sleep throughout.
Outside, the private enclosed garden offers space to relax and unwind. The hot tub is a real highlight, perfect for evening soaks after exploring the coast or countryside, while the garden provides a peaceful setting for outdoor meals or a quiet coffee in the morning.
Set in Minehead’s old town conservation area, The Old Sweet Shop enjoys a calm, tucked-away feel while still being within easy walking distance of the town, beach and harbour. Exmoor National Park, coastal walks and charming villages are all close by, making it an excellent base for exploring the area.
The Old Sweet Shop is dog friendly, family friendly and thoughtfully equipped for comfortable stays. It’s a place designed for slowing down, spending time together and enjoying the simple pleasures of a beautifully restored historic home.

About the host
Your host
The Old Sweet Shop was purchased in 2015, marking an important step in what had already become a long-standing passion for restoring and caring for historic properties in Exmoor. With a background in history and a love of character buildings, interiors and place, creating spaces that feel both beautiful and genuinely comfortable has always been at the heart of the work.
The cottage immediately stood out for its charm and setting. Once a much-loved part of the local streetscape, it offered the opportunity to restore a traditional thatched property with care and attention, while creating a welcoming home that worked well for modern stays. The restoration focused on retaining the cottage’s original features — from its stone walls and beams to its layout and sense of warmth — while ensuring it was practical, comfortable and easy to enjoy as a holiday home.
It was during this process that the adjoining barn came into view. Having completed work on The Old Sweet Shop, attention then turned to what would become Stone Barn, transforming a former working building into a thoughtfully designed holiday property that complements the cottage next door.
Over time, this approach has grown into Exmoor Character Cottages — a small collection of four carefully restored homes, each with its own personality and sense of place. Many guests return year after year, something I take as the greatest compliment.
Sharing these properties, and helping guests enjoy everything Exmoor has to offer, continues to be a genuine pleasure.

Why they chose this property
The Old Sweet Shop was purchased in June 2015. Its charm, position in Minehead’s old town and strong sense of history immediately stood out, along with the opportunity to restore a much-loved period property with care and respect for its character.
With a background in history and a long-standing interest in property and interiors, the appeal lay in preserving the cottage’s original features while making it comfortable and practical for modern holidays. The aim was never to create something overly styled, but rather a warm, welcoming place that felt authentic, well cared for and easy to enjoy.
The restoration focused on retaining the cottage’s personality — from its thick stone walls and beams to its layout and proportions — while improving light, flow and comfort throughout. Particular attention was paid to creating generous living and dining spaces, making it a home that works especially well for families and groups spending time together.
Having completed The Old Sweet Shop, attention then turned to the adjacent barn, which went on to become Stone Barn. Together, the two properties reflect a consistent approach: thoughtful restoration, quality workmanship and a focus on creating places where guests can truly relax.
Today, The Old Sweet Shop remains a firm favourite with guests, many of whom return regularly — something that has always been the intention from the very beginning.

What makes this property unique
The Old Sweet Shop offers a rare combination of traditional character, generous light and practical comfort. While many historic cottages can feel dark or enclosed, this one benefits from a surprisingly bright and airy interior, with well-proportioned rooms and plenty of natural light throughout. This makes it feel warm and welcoming in all seasons.
One of its real advantages is the large, sociable kitchen and dining space, which forms the heart of the house and works beautifully for shared meals and relaxed time together. Combined with four individually styled bedrooms, a private garden and hot tub, the cottage offers space and flexibility that’s unusual in a property of this age.
Another key benefit is private on-site parking for two cars, something that is rare for period cottages in this part of Minehead and particularly valuable for families or groups travelling together.
Set in Minehead’s old town, the cottage enjoys a peaceful setting while remaining within easy walking distance of the beach, harbour, shops and restaurants, as well as coastal walks and Exmoor beyond.
As part of a small collection of carefully restored properties, guests also benefit from over 15 years’ experience of welcoming visitors to the area, thoughtful attention to detail, and the reassurance of booking directly with an owner who knows both the cottage and the local area extremely well.
