Nearby there is the picturesque Lake Recreation St Mathieu, which offers a sandy beach with safe swimming, fishing, sailing and pedal boats. There is also a bar which is open all day in summer.
St Mathieu also organizes summer bustling markets of producers of the country, where you can buy local produce, which is barbecued in the commune. There are also drinks and entertainment for sure it's a fantastic evening al fresco.
There are several other leisure lakes within a half hour drive from L'Hirondelle each with their own atmosphere and opportunities for large family day out.
Two favorites are: St. Estephe and south Charente Lakes of the North, which have excellent beaches and supervised swimming areas. One of the Charente lakes also has a sailing school and an equestrian center.
You can discover the beautiful castles of the road Richard the Lionheart. There are 16 in total, the Magic Castle Montbron majestic castle of Rochechouart, perched on a hill.
Limoges, capital of porcelain in France, is only 45 km from us. One can reach the beautiful cities of Angoulême and Périgueux in less than an hour by car.
It is especially important to mention here Brantome, 40 km to the south, which is known as the Venice of the Perigord. It is surrounded by water, with the center, a magnificent abbey overlooking the dam Dronne.
You can rent canoes in which to paddle around the canals of the city or, if you feel more active, travel downstream Bourdeilles neighbors for a day on the water.

Located in the heart of 'Le Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin', L'Hirondelle is ideally situated to explore the beautiful and varied attractions of the Haute-Vienne, Dordogne and Charente departments. Activities include walking, cycling, bird watching, golf, horse riding, or fishing, relaxing, boating and swimming at the many nearby lakes. St Mathieu Lake is just 5 kms away. Rochechouart with its medieval chateau and good selection of restaurants is a 20 minute drive. The gîte is only 2 kms from the pretty village of St Mathieu with a petrol station, bank, post office, 2 bakers, bars,restaurant, newsagent and a well stocked supermarket. During peak summer months, the village hosts lively night markets with BBQ and live music.
