About this property

Quiet nature cabin on the beautiful Marengo River

COVID-19 NOTICE: Our cabin is a great place to get away from the crowds and have outdoor adventures! We follow cleaning and operations guidance released by the Bayfield County Health Department, State of Wisconsin, and the CDC. The nearest health care facility to the cabin is Memorial Medical Center in Ashland, a small hospital with a full emergency room, 30 minutes away by car. The cabin has no landline phone or internet and little cell service (emergency calls should work, but no guarantees). We encourage you to get fully vaccinated before traveling to the area and follow safe masking and social distancing protocols when in public areas.

PHOTO UPDATES COMING SOON! Amenities not shown in current photos include large outdoor fire pit in yard, new clothes dryer, larger and lower dining table (great for kids!), and newer art on the walls.

Relax and enjoy the north woods of Wisconsin from your private two bedroom retreat offering a full bath, screened in porch and complete kitchen. This cute, year round cabin is the perfect place for relaxing. Whether you spend time watching the river flow by, stargazing on crystal clear nights, entertaining friends around a campfire, or taking on more strenuous activities like skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, trout fishing, hiking, and berry picking, this 900 sq. ft. cabin provides a comforting retreat from hectic day-to-day life.

The cabin’s simple layout combines the 16×12 living room with the 15×12 kitchen & dining area. There are 2 carpeted bedrooms and a full bath. The 16×10, 3-season porch adds more living space from spring through fall, including delightful "overflow" sleeping quarters.

Enjoy three lushly wooded acres, your piece of forest heaven, adjacent to the 400-acre Lincoln Community Forest. The large, level backyard contains a big stone fire pit and a couple of hammock-hanging trees. Dry firewood, a charcoal grill, and charcoal are provided.

A gentle, mowed slope leads down to a shallow entry spot on the Marengo river, a DNR-designated trout stream. The rocky river bottom slopes down to a great swimming hole in gentle current just upstream, and riffles downstream. Water shoes are recommended.

Just across the road from the cabin is the main trailhead for 3.5 miles of groomed cross-country skiing and rugged hiking trails in the Lincoln Community Forest, a nonprofit-managed forest property. The LCF is open to public hunting, fishing, non-motorized trail use, and trapping. Forest access is free for all users.

Close by are many popular recreation spots and hidden gems in and around the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. It's a 15-minute drive to the very popular Morgan Falls and St. Peter's Dome trail and half an hour to Copper Falls State Park. Other nearby gems include the Porcupine Lake Wilderness, Rainbow Lakes Wilderness, Lakes Owen and Namekagon (public recreation areas with beaches), St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, and dozens of miles of ski and mountain bike trails in the Drummond, Rock Lake, North End, and Birkie trail networks.

Spend a day (or five!) hiking through wilderness on the North Country National Scenic Trail, or head half an hour's drive north to relax in the cool breeze of Chequamegon Bay and take in the shops and restaurants in Ashland, the closest big town with all the services and home to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. A further 35 minutes takes you to Bayfield, the Madeline Island ferry, and the gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

There is little cell service and no internet at the cabin. There is public WiFi at Four Corners Saloon, about a 15 minute drive.

Girls Weekend
Absolutely loved the cabin! Host was very informative and gave great instructions and directions. Close because it was dog friendly, but we didn’t notice any signs of previous dogs in there. Beautiful, secluded setting. If you are dependent on internet, not the place for you but if you want to get away from it all, it is perfect! Plan on going back again and making it an annual girls getaway!

Relaxation at its finest
The cabin was exactly what we were looking for. We rode our SxS to Lake Superior, down to Hayward, up to Iron River, up to Ashland and all around. The cabin was comfy and contained everything we needed and more. They put a lot of time and thought into what is needed and surpassed our expectations. Check in was easy and check out was straightforward and simple. They had lots of things for us to do and use to make the most of our trip. We were able to unplug and relax, yet were not far from good food and other necessities. I look forward to staying again, in the future. Thank for a great weekend getaway!

Amazing time at beautiful cabin
This cabin and property had everything our group of 4 needed for a relaxing and adventure-filled stay. There was clearly so much care put into making the cabin inviting for everyone, from all the activities to the organization of all of the necessities. The stream and surrounding woods were stunning and we adored exploring the area of the property and the nearby community forest. Thank you so much for opening your lovely cabin up for others!

Cute but not clean
The cabin is very cute and the location is lovely. However, it is not clean and several things needed repair. It is a drive to get to anywhere but we enjoyed the secluded feel. A little TLC and this cabin could be a 5 star.

Perfect getaway
My two adult daughters and I came to the area for a short girls vacation. We thought the area was so beautiful. The cabin was perfect for us! We loved it! We all enjoy being more secluded in the woods than staying in crowded towns or campgrounds. I was so pleased with the location. Definitely a very peaceful secluded natural setting that we enjoyed. We loved relaxing by the river and the campfire every night. (We had trouble finding firewood nearby, and do recommend they stock more even if they charge per bundle or something, we figured we would drive by firewood for sale but often never saw any close enough). There is so much to do in that area, 3 days was not enough time to do all we wanted. I plan to come back and will definitely stay in the cabin again. I loved it.

About the host

Hosted by Carl Sack

Host profile image
We are a family residing in Duluth, Minnesota who decided to live our dream of owning a small cabin in the great North Woods. Carl went to college in Ashland at Northland College and retains a great love of the Chequamegon Bay area. Zee grew up in Madison, where we met when both of us were in grad school at the University of Wisconsin. We are delighted to be able to share our little piece of paradise with friends and with other nature lovers seeking a woodsy retreat away from city life.

Why they chose this property

We first saw this cabin listed on Zillow a full year before we purchased it, and thought, "wouldn't it be nice to own something like that someday?" Nice and cozy, no frills but well-kept, deep in the woods with direct access to water and trails, and in the middle of all the great haunts south of Ashland. Lo and behold, a year later the property was still on the market, and through some new employment and a little luck gained the means to make our dream a reality.

What makes this property unique

As the fridge magnet says, "There is no wifi in the forest, but we promise you will find a better connection."
