About this property
Historic pet friendly cabin with shooting range, and ATV trails on 80 acres.
** Please note Disclaimers at bottom**
The Catlett Gap Homestead is a hand hewn log cabin sitting on 80 acres nestled in a valley approximately half way between Winchester VA, and Berkley Springs WVA. Pet friendly, with room to roam, camp fires, and ATV trails; The cabin pre-dates the civil war and was a homestead originally deeded to the Catlett family; some of whom still live in the area. At one point the cabin is mentioned in records of confederate troop movements, and apparently Stonewall Jackson himself spent a night inside the cabin during a snow storm.
A rustic hunting cabin with certain creature comforts such as a smart TV with Netflix, Prime and whatever else streaming services you might have, Wi-Fi, HVAC, Alexa, fireplace, BBQ pit, two fire pits, dual stall shower and bathroom with washer and dryer, and a fully stocked kitchen. Other extra amenities of note beyond the standard: Firewood, charcoal, bottled water, fresh ice, candy, fish food, paper goods for BBQ. Outside burning is only permitted in the two designated areas with a fire ring and only when risk of forest fire is low. It has 2 bedrooms and a couch, and could sleep up to 8. Other in-door amenities include a wood burning stove, a small library of the local wildlife, and classic novels. There is also a cabinet full of board games. Because of the local area, there are lots of fun activities to do year round. Please read the other descriptions of the photos. Please note, renters must be at least 21 years of age to book this property. Also please note, that while this a pet and firearm friendly location, anyone who books at this property who brings firearms or pets are booking at their own risk. There are no fences so if your dog is not voice trained, do not leave it off the leash.
The gun range features a 20 and 55 yard back stop. Please bring your own targets. DO NOT LITTER, and police your brass. Property is checked by owner after every visit. If excessive abuse or trash is left onsite, extra cleaning fees will be incurred.
ATV trails are clearly marked with purple tree rings.
Animal Disclaimer: Given that this is a pre-civil war log cabin you are bound to encounter pests such as bees, fruit flies, ants, and house flies in the summer and stink bugs year round. These are virtually impossible to control. Fly swatter is on the fridge. There is wasp spray in the bottom left cupboard. Bring bug spray in the summer for mosquitoes. You may see the occasional mouse or black snake. But you also may see the occasional box turtle or toad. Toads like to hang out on the patio at night in the summer. Think of it as glamping.

We enjoyed our stay and nobody was bored with several activities just outside the door. Between the ATV and hiking trails, shooting area and trips down to the pond everyone enjoy themselves. We also took a few trips out to experience some of the surroundings areas as well and we weren't left disappointed. Definitely worth the trip.
The cabin was amazing, very rustic, it had everything that we could need to be comfortable, the shooting range was a great extra feature, we will definitely return.
The cabin was cute and cozy. We had a great time there. I loved the range and the trails. We brought our great dane out and he loved all the the property to play. I don't fish but we had fun at the pond feeding them. The area was also nice, we enjoyed the good food.
This was a perfect break in a great location for a Father-Son (adult son) bonding thing. Nice cabin, great place to do some shooting, great trails to ride a mountain bike, e-bike or just hike, and so close to a WMA to turkey hunt and skeet shoot over there. The greatest thing is that our family's dogs go everywhere with us so they loved it, too. Host was wonderful. Will be back.
Great cabin, well-maintained, great options and very secure. Pet-friendly, the options were great and I even recommended this rental to my friends and family.I do plan on renting this cabin again in the future.
It was a lovely cabin with a cozy atmosphere. The shooting range was fun and theres a gas station right down the road if you need something. The host was nice and communicates well. 10/10 would stay again.

Liked: Check-in, communication, listing accuracy
Disliked: Cleanliness
For having a supposed 82 acres the cabin and shooting range are about 100ft from a highway with constant noise, someone drove by in a truck on the property about 20 yards beyond the target range luckily we where not shooting, its a decent spot for a more rugged group someone looking for a newer more modern place will be disappointed
Nice cabin with great property. Endless things to do if your into the outdoors. Relatively close to all stores for being a pretty remote cabin. Would definitely recommend. Will be returning in the future.
Very peaceful and relaxing getaway for my family! Beautiful property and home... Just as described in the listing. Highly recommend! I would like to note I gave 4/5 on cleanliness because the property could definitely use a deep clean/maintenance
Found this property to be exactly as described. We loved the rustic cabin. The property itself was fantastic. Enjoyed using the shooting range and walked along the ATV trail.
We had the absolute best time at the cabin. My son (9) had a blast riding his atv on the trails with us. The kids also loved feeding the fish and playing darts, and we all had fun with the shooting range. The water does have a strange smell, but it’s a short drive to Berkeley Springs where we filled up a bunch of jugs. The cabin was convenient to the almost heaven swing at Cacapon, and we made it on the last day the summit road was open before they shut it down for the winter. Berkley Springs brewery was a great spot too. They allow dogs inside and have pup plates. We all had a blast and can’t wait to visit again!

About the host
Hosted by Anthony Ray
Born and raised in Fairfax County, after having gone to James Madison HS four years, my friends and I had countless opportunities to visit the farm. I basically grew up there on the weekends, shooting, hunting, and fishing. Although most of my friends consider me a 'city boy' this property has a special place in my heart- and I'll never part with it. It will eventually end up being my son's when I move on.
Why they chose this property
My dad bought this place from Mr. Bob Kerns, who in turn had purchased the property from the Catlett family many decades prior-who were the original homesteaders of the valley. The Catlett family built the house by hand. Some of the tools we still have. Some of the children were even born in the house. Mr. Kerns has one son who he deeded five acres of the 90 acre parcel to and is our nearest neighbor. He still lives there and is a close friend of the family. People describe the cabin as a 'man cave' or the 'ultimate hunting lodge' or a 'rustic farm cabin'. It's small but has all the creature comforts you would care about. All of my dad's friends, my friends, and myself have trophy bucks hanging on the wall there. When we shoot a big one, it is a group decision whether we keep the head-using Boone & Crockett measurements. If the deer is worthy for mounting, it stays at the cabin. If not, but still special we do a European mount and the owner decides whether they want to take it home or not.
