About this property

50 mile views into NR Gorge, recently renovated, 6000 sq ft

This is the destination for Family Reunions in Southern WV! The Amherst Retreat was designed by architect E.T. Bogges in the mid 1960's as a residence for Mr and Mrs. J. S. Lewis. The home was built on the cliffs overlooking the New River Gorge at Arbuckle Creek. The home is currently wrapping up a complete renovation from top to bottom. We have installed new roof, HVAC, electrical, drywall, floors, lighting, appliances, furniture, and thousands of hours of elbow grease to restore the home to its original glory. The mansion was built using nothing but the finest materials from around the globe. The siding is redwood and stone. The doors are mahogany. The cabins are wormy chestnut. The house has marble fireplaces, countertops and showers. Expensive doorknobs and bathroom brass fixtures are throughout the house.

We are accepting reservations for the summer of 2019 starting in May and will be updating the photos weekly as furnishing arrive and the finishing projects and touches are complete.

The home is perfect for large family gatherings, weddings, corporate retreats, or a multi family vacation getaway.

The kitchen is over 1,000 square feet and is lined with the original Wormy Chestnut cabinets, large food prep island, handmade French fixtures, Italian marble counter tops, and updated with all new Samsung appliances and a a custom concrete deep sink. There is a table that seats eight opposite the cooking area along the glass wall with one of many beautiful views of the gorge. There is also a dining room with a table and chairs that accommodate ten. There is a second chefs kitchen and pantry with an extra set of stainless steel appliances for catering or large groups. The kitchen area alone is an amazing place to congregate and visit with friends and family.

The Main Dinning and Living Rooms are a combined 1,300 square feet with multiple exits to the front patio garden or the 1,400 square foot back deck. These grand rooms have been renovated with new hardwood floors and furniture that will seat a small army. We were able to refinish the elaborate trim, the piano key crown molding, the Italian Marble Mantle , and an original silk oriental mural.

The upper level is linked my brightly lit tile hallways guiding guests to four bedrooms. Three bed rooms share one and one half baths and will accommodate many different sleeping arrangements with each room having their own pull out couch. The Master bedroom is fit for a king or a mid size family. The ensuite bath has a cedar sauna, walk in closet, his and hers marble vanities, and a sunken marble tub that is large enough for an entire family as well. All the fixtures and faucets in the upper level baths and outfitted with mid century Phylrich brass details that have been refinished by a local jeweler.

The lower level is accessed by a spiral stairway of the kitchen and has multiple entry points from the south side of the property. There are two bedrooms with a private bath and a kids bunk room with plenty of freestyle bedding arrangements.

Luxury
Gorgeous house, spacious, and luxurious. The kitchen is fabulous with plenty of space, more pots and pans than you can use, and even bakeware. Beds are comfortable, and bedrooms are spacious. The water in the showers is hard to adjust and comes out to hard, and the drains are slow, but it all works, and the house is so cool and unusual, we didn't mind too much. The views from the hot tub are fabulous, and the hot tub was clean and hot. It's a great space for a large group--even of unrelated adults because there are enough hang-out areas and privacy, as well as central gathering rooms. The host is very responsive. Definitely recommend!

Beautiful house
The house is clean and well maintained. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook during our stay. We’ve been coming here for three years. We like the hot tub, the views, the layout of the house and the location.

Great location if you are rafting with Ace
Fantastic mid-century modern house with 7 bedrooms, a fantastic kitchen, and a great view out back. There are two grills and a hot tub on the outside deck that the owner had ready to go on arrival. We picked this house because we had a group of 13 guys rafting the Gauley with Ace Rafting, which is only 10 minutes away. It is plenty big, with tons of parking and room to spread out. The only minor dings are the wifi is slow/spotty on the south end of the house and I personally don't recommend the pullout couches as beds if you are over the age of 13 (totally my own fault/miscalculation, not the owners). Also, the ice/water is not hooked up to the upstairs refrigerator, but there is a great ice-maker downstairs in the game room and the tap water is fine. The owner gave fantastic directions and some great tips on where to go out to eat. As a heads up, the cell signal in the area is hit and miss, but a lot better than I thought. Recommend downloading an area google map on your app as a backup

So nice we rented it twice!
My husband and I brought his parents, siblings, and their families to this house last Summer. We loved it so much that we rented the same place again this year for my side of our family. Personally, I want to re-create that laundry room in my house! It contains a second refrigerator, built-in drying racks, extra sink, and floor to ceiling cabinets. Yes, please! The variety of rooms allowed everyone to have their own spaces and still spend time all together when we desired. The rooms are beautiful and the views are breathtaking! Yes, there are some minor issues like any home but just relax and enjoy the views! Both sides of our family appreciated the nugget ice maker in the basement! Although we didn’t use it, we appreciated that a baby gate is provided to keep little ones off the circular stairs. The beautiful Fiesta tableware made in West Virginia is another nice touch! Our only regret is that we didn’t bring binoculars to fully take advantage of the views of the gorge.

Family reunion
The house was perfect for a big group. It’s a really unique, historical property. Gorgeous views, plenty of cooking and serving dishes, multiple refrigerators and dishwashers. Housekeeping was quick to deliver additional things we needed. Maintenance fixed a few things for us while we were there and he was very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms have original fixtures which are nice historically but don’t work perfectly like modern fixtures. The master shower doesn’t drain well, but that’s probably tough to prevent with old pipes.

The home is owned by a couple of old river guides that found this house and fell in love with it. Paul and Bobby purchase the Retreat in the Spring of 2017. Both of the partners have multiple rental properties, local outfitting businesses, and share a love for the New River Gorge Region. After the first time seeing the home we knew it needed to be saved to be enjoyed by visitors for years to come. The home had been vacant for several years and needed a total renovation. After two year and lots of help from great contractors, friends, and family we are very excited to show off our new vacation property.

Why they chose this property

You will not find a vacation property like this in many places. It's located just a hew hundred yards off US Route 19 off the Main Street Exit in Oak Hill, WV. There are multiple whitewater rafting companies located within 5 miles. The New River Gorge National River, Gauley River National River, and the Bluestone National River have thousands of acres of protected land for you to enjoy.

What makes this property unique

Once at the retreat you have a nice private piece of the New River Gorge and only minutes to shopping, hiking, rafting, swimming, fishing, biking, climbing, or any outdoor adventure that you have always wanted to try.
