Thompson House is historic, quirky, unique and comfortable. It survived the 1964 9.2 earthquake and tsunami that caused Old Valdez to relocate to the new and present town site. An addition more than doubled the size of the original one room cabin which included an extensive remodel.
The house sleeps 6. There are three bedrooms and a half bath upstairs, the master with a queen bed, the second with three twins, and a twin in the tower recommended for anyone over the age of 12. There are no doors separating each space. There are two futons available downstairs if needed to sleep more than six. The full bath and sauna are steps apart on the main floor. Newly refurbished, Thompson House offers Wi fi, TV, blue ray player, new kitchen appliances, microwave, washer, dryer, freezer, on demand water heater and Toyo heater. No need to chop and haul wood! There is off street parking in front of the house.
Centrally located, it is only steps to one of the two grocery stores in town, a few blocks to the harbor, a bank and ATM, restaurants, museums, art shops, gift shops, harbor drive, beaches, ponds and down town. At the end of the Bremner St, where the house sits, you'll find a park strip with the Buccaneer Pirate Ship playground. The college is the home to the Maxine Whitney Museum and just behind it is another playground called the Treehouse park. Valdez is a small and very cute town. You'll find the locals to be friendly, kind and helpful. Choose from the many fishing guides and out fitters, kayak rentals, excursions to the glaciers, and extensive wild life on land and in the sea. The beauty of the mountains surrounds the town with waterfalls everywhere.

The house was clean and interesting in its history. 5 beds plus a futon. The bed in the widows walk tower was certainly interesting. Close to grocery shopping and the ice cream shop. We enjoyed our stay immensely!

The historical characteristics are profound. Close to everything in Valdez.
Very old but clean. Very narrow stairs to bedrooms . Had everything we needed. Nice location to our activities. Upstairs bedrooms not built for tall people. Owner very responsive and pleasant.
Property was as unique as Valdez with quirky historical aspect. A fun experience, but would have appreciated a 'welcome book' with our hosts expectations/instructions for departure.
To be honest I didn’t read descriptions before booking. it turned out to be a great surprise haha.Communication with Molly was great except I didn’t get cell signal without wifi to let her know we checked out. My other friends were having wild thoughts after seeing the doll in the main room haha (they watched too much horror movies) so I got to sleep in the queen bed myself and they all stayed in the attic. We all enjoyed the sauna! I will recommend this place!
We’re a family of 6 with 4 teenage boys winding our way through AK for the first time. Valdez is our midway point and the historic house was perfect. It is quirky and quaint which adds appeal.
We loved that we had a kitchen and space to spread out. The washer and dryer were put to great use and being able to walk everywhere was perfect!
We rented bikes from the Fat Mermaid and tried out ice cream from a couple of the stands. Walking to Safeway was helpful in making meals and we just enjoyed being out and about and a couple of rest days in between a fishing charter.
I highly recommend utilizing this house - the space and location is great!
The house itself is just fun with eclectic architectural elements and decorations that speak to the history of the house and the Valdez area. Rain or sun the scenery is incredible. It was perfect for our first experience in Valdez.
On the practical side, you are across the street from the grocery store and a healthy walk down to the water front.
I'm 67, and you need good knees to get up the stairs. I did fine, but your downstairs option is a futon. The upstairs bed is very comfortable.
The sauna was a treat. We'd never used a private one and now consider it a plus in a rental. Be careful of the top door lock on the outside.
The house was a good match for the two of us. Enjoy.
We picked this location and house for its distance to friends at campgrounds, stores and the harbor for boat access. The house has a unique outside and especially inside configuration. The room and bed layout is sort of a open design and the kitchen has a narrow working space but once you work this out with people staying with you, it was fine.
The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and stove, oven and microwave and other cooking provisions and there were plenty of blankets and linen supplies to make this stay more convenient.
The heating system was easy to operate. Boot dryers were an additional bonus and were used every day, since it rained almost every day, heavily at times.
Molly, the owner, was a great person to communicate with and when we needed more light in the porch area, she bought some very nice utility lights to help us use the porch
We also used the propane barbecue outside!
Overall, it suits our needs quite nice and we have reserved the house for future trips.

The house was large enough for all of our needs. The owner was very responsive and wonderful. The house was beautiful and well taken care of!
We loved the house. The location was perfect. Walking distance to the grocery store, the small boat harbour for our tour with Stan Stevens and the restaurants. Also everything for eating at home as well. Special treat for us was the fish hatchery where we watched sealions eat salmon.
This fun quirky little house is fabulous. Very convenient right across the street from the Safeway and down the street from the docks. Of course you can walk everywhere in Valdez so it's a great location. Had everything we needed for cooking breakfast. Lots of room for our party of 8. Definitely will stay here again.

What a unique property! We enjoyed looking at the features and knick knacks of everything. Great location and wonderful host!
My husband, two daughters and my in-laws all stayed here for two nights. The house was very comfortable with lots of sleeping room. The twin beds upstairs are extremely close to the roof walls, which the girls didn’t mind. My husband and I chose to sleep downstairs on the futon.
I loved all the stained glass throughout the house and the history behind it. Hardest thing to get used to is the constant sunlight in the summer. There were no shades on some of the windows so it was always b
So convenient, across from Safeway and 2 blocks from dog park. House has such character and history! Having the fold out on the first level as stairs and up levels are a little risky for anyone unsteady. Will look for it first every time we go back to Valdez!
