Tomales Bay is one of those magical places rarely found in today’s busy world. A unique inlet of the Pacific Ocean, utterly pristine with unparalleled beauty. A sense of wonder is palpable when here, watching the misty morning fog over the water, or the deer grazing in the early evening. A place such a this requires an equally special location to base yourself, to allow you explore and experience all that is on offer. Welcome to Oyster Cove Cottage.

Oyster Cove Cottage provides ample outdoor space for all seasons. Enjoy your morning coffee, or an evening glass on one of two decks leading off the bedrooms and main room or in the hot tub. Sweeping views of the water await you, and there is a comfortable lounge area to settle into. There is no better place to watch the sun sink behind the Headlands (easily accessible for hiking!). Enjoy the gardens surrounding the cottage from this perch. On a winter evening snuggle by the wood-burning stove or step outside under the star filled sky and enjoy a soak in your own private hot tub, an added bonus.

The second bathroom, located en-suite to this bedroom, is tiled in travertine stone with a shower for freshening up.
Hog Island Retreat, located on a bluff overlooking the Bay avoids the road noise, damp and cold of the cottages built over the water, while providing plenty of outdoors space for play or contemplation of the stunning views. Access to Tomales Bay for boating, swimming, fishing etc. is just across the road via the Marconi boat launch.
And added bonus of Hog Island Retreat - for those not wanting to cook or looking to explore the famed food culture of California- we are close to the famed Hog Island Oyster Company (reservations recommended) or The Marshall Store (something for everyone at this Oyster Shack Smoke House!). Tony’s Seafood, a mere 0.7 miles away, is the nearest eatery and bar. Famed restaurants dot the surrounding area and artisan foods abound such as the renowned Cheese producers Cowgirl creamy. Tomales Bay is a gastronomic destination, and Hog Island Retreat puts you on the door step of everything on offer.
The nearby Point Reyes National Seashore Park is not to be missed- only a scenic twenty minute drive from Hog Island Retreat. Point Reyes has multiple incredible day hikes with expansive ocean views, wildlife galore (think elk, foxes, whales, owls) and the opportunity to enjoy it without large crowds of people. Marconi State Historic Park, located next door (can be accessed through the gate at the end off our private road) offers several well posted easy hiking trails with stunning Bay views for an after dinner stroll.
There is a stunning variety of birds and wildlife that make Tomales Bay their home. Deer, wild turkeys, foxes are frequent visitors to Hog Island Retreat and spotting seals in the Bay is not unusual. Oyster beds dot the cove in front of the cottage and you can watch the oyster farmers plying their trade.
Tomales Bay is a unique 12-mile-long natural resource with numerous designations including being named a “Wetland of International Importance” in 2002. It supports plants, animals, fish, waterbirds, clams and oysters, seals, otters, and other wetland-dependent species including several threatened and endangered species. It is an important waterbird migratory stopover site and over-wintering ground along the Pacific flyway - it regularly hosts over 20,000 individuals in the winter months. Tomales Bay is a 6,800-acre estuary on the West Marin coast, 40 miles northwest of San Francisco. The bay occupies the seaward end of a rift valley that was formed by the intersection of the San Andreas Fault with the Northern California coastline, it is one mile wide, and relatively shallow, with an average depth of 18 feet. The bay exchanges water with the Pacific Ocean, thus supporting a unique marine culture and industry begun by the Coastal Miwok Indians 5,000 years ago. American and European pioneers in the mid-19th century saw Tomales Bay as the promised land for beef cattle and dairy ranching, farming, fishing, and logging. West Marin residents have preserved the pasturelands and maritime seashores to the present day. Shoreline Highway 1, from Point Reyes Station north to the Sonoma Border, encompasses the harmonic balance of environmentalism and pristine wilderness.
We look forward to sharing this magical location and Hog Island Retreat with you- please don't hesitate to send us any questions you have, we are happy to answer and assist you in any way that we can so that your vacation is just that- a restful, serene, and enjoyable time!

Nice, chill spot with an excellent view of Tomales Bay. Couch in front room doesn’t have enough padding to be slept on but back room couches are comfy. Would stay there again!

Glad you enjoyed this sweet spot. Yes the two couches in the second bedroom can be converted to beds with the bedding provided.
Kitchen well equipped, hot tub good temperature, comfortable beds, beautiful view. Also, there are 1-3 mile easy hikes close by at Millerton Point and Tomales Bay Trail at Giacomini Wetlands.

Happy you enjoyed the hot tub, the views and the beds :) as well as the nearby hikes, including next door at Marconi State Historic Park.
It was our 3rd stay at the house - the property is great, and location (close to Point Reyes & multiple top notch seafood spots) with views of Tomales Bay can't be beat. We'll be back!

Always happy to hear that our returning guests had a great stay.
I appreciated the clean house, kitchen area, and lovely views. I also liked the easy check in process. The washer/dryer and hot tub were a major plus. Only complaint is that the front door was sticky and hard to close at times. I would definitely stay here again.

So glad you enjoyed the views and the clean house. Do come again.
We had a wonderful stay. Jennifer’s house was just as described. The best stocked kitchen we have ever experienced, a fantastic evening view of the Bay and abundant wildlife, both morning and night. While it was just the two of us, this house would be great for families. Jennifer, thank you for one of our favorite Point Reyes/Marshall trips!

You are very welcome. So glad you had a memorable stay at our cottage and were able to enjoy the wildlife and beautiful sunsets. Come again!
Well provisioned kitchen, hot tub directly off the deck with great view, robes!Wanted to let you know about a leakin the roof. Water drips from one of the can lights in kitchen in front of the stove. And there were ants the first morning, but we found a can of Raid and sprayed them all. They were swarming a jar of honey. We wiped them off and wrapped it in cellophane.
This was the fourth or fifth time we've stayed at this gem of a cottage. We just love sitting outside (deck, hot tub, adirondack chairs in the yard) looking at the beautiful views of the bay and sunsets. We were visited multiple times throughout the day by deer and wild turkeys. The kitchen is well-stocked with everything we needed, the beds are comfortable, and overall the place was sparkling clean. One of the things we like best about the location is how close it is to the Marconi Conference Center/State Park and all the walking trails to explore. No doubt we'll be back again!

This is a lovely, well organized and beautifully situated cottage overlooking the bay. It was lovely to be there and enjoy the amenities and beautiful views with lots of light and privacy as well. And we got to see visiting wildlife including a wild turkey, deer and various birds. It's also a perfect location for going hiking in the area. Really fun.

Liked: Check-in, location
First I want to mention that the view is fantastic. The home is close to the water, Tony’s Seafood, the Marshall store and about 15 mins from downtown point Reyes. The home itself is sweet but also a bit dated. I had planned a picnic for my 13yo daughter (and sister, and friend) but the grounds were not the same as shown in the photos. The grass was way overgrown, prohibiting us from having our picnic out on the lawn. This was disappointing as it was a special occasion. We ended up doing it on the deck instead. It was still nice, but unexpected. Luckily the hot tub did work and we enjoyed our time out there. The main reason I gave the home 3 stars is this: When we arrived we were overwhelmed by a fishy smell throughout the house. Oddly, it continued all weekend. It was strong enough that we could smell it overnight sleeping. You may want to bring incense or candles unless the owner figures out what smells so bad. I did let her know (and also that the TV wasn’t working) but both remained a mystery, and unattended. Even so, we did love our weekend. The view and location are very special - with some unexpected inconveniences.

About the host
Hosted by Jennifer
As long-term Bay Area residents, we have been enjoying the wonders of Tomales Bay and Point Reyes National Seashore for thirty years. It is one of our favorite places on the planet. An unspoiled natural resource in close proximity to the urban bustle of the Bay Area cities that offers the full range of outdoor activities that we enjoy, including hiking, swimming, kayaking, sailing, cycling, fishing, crabbing, birding and stargazing. We are imbued with a sense of joyful serenity whenever we are here.
Why they chose this property
Having stayed in numerous properties on both shores of Tomales Bay, we kept returning to Brynant Cottage. It’s location on the sunny eastern shore of the Bay, on a private road, perched on a hill over the Bay with a large garden among mature trees and its own year-round creek, make Brynant unique and wonderful. Being on land, it avoids the cold and damp of the houses that are on stilts over the water. The cottage is modern yet cozy, and the unique setting allows for expansive contemplation. When it became available, we jumped at the opportunity to purchase this heirloom property.
The property has historic roots. It is located within the site of the ancient Miwok settlement called Echakolum. The Miwok Tomallos and Olamentko tribes (two of 500 Miwok tribes in California) inhabited the site for thousands of years through 1930. The property was part of the 1,127 acres that the Marconi Wireless Co. purchased in 1912 to build the Marshall Receiving Station, the first trans-Pacific wireless communications center. Upon entering World War I the US Navy took control of the station. Years later the Marconi Receiving Station was the first in the US mainland to receive word of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.
What makes this property unique
Brynant Cottage is bathed in natural beauty. The inspiring views, the soothing sounds of the waves from the bay and the songs of myriad birds, and the near daily visits by wild turkey, deer and other critters are a humbling reminder of the beauty that Mother Nature can bestow. The property is welcoming after a day out kayaking on the Bay or hiking in Point Reyes National Seashore or swimming in one of the many beaches or bird watching on the Estero or spotting whales from the dunes of Limantour beach or fishing or crabbing or exploring the artisanal venues in Point Reyes Station or enjoying oysters in Marshall. Brynant Cottage entices you to unwind, to share yet another glass of wine and the hot tub, with good friends and family. Enjoy this awesome and unique corner of the world! 😎
