The ARTIST'S RETREAT CARRIAGE HOUSE is a Beautifully Decorated one bedroom (King bed) Carriage House situated in a Very Private Wooded setting, at the end of a private road. The TRAILS of ACADIA NATIONAL PARK and the OCEAN are just a short walk from your door. Fresh water swimming at Echo Lake is just minutes away. This CHARMING COTTAGE is just a mile from the Village of Southwest Harbor and 13 miles from Bar Harbor. The Free Island Explorer Bus service is less than a 10 minute walk.
The living space offers open, skylighted cathedral ceilings; fully equipped kitchen with island for dining, and living room with GAS FIREPLACE; a King bed in the bedroom, and bath with shower and spacious vanity.
After a full day of exploring Acadia return to the Cottage for GRILLING or RELAX Under the STARS by the WOOD BURNING CHIMINEA. Comfy, cushioned Adirondack Chairs, side tables, Hammock, and Perennial Garden.
Includes Wi-Fi, satellite TV DVD, Gas Grill and Outdoor Chimenea.
FULLY EQUIPPED with linens, towels, kitchenware. A Washer/Dryer, Gas grill, storage for bikes, beach chairs, towels, and blankets, are all located on first floor.

The carriage house was perfectly equipped and decorated. There were lots of small details that added to experience and atmosphere. Cyd was an outstanding host. She was very welcoming and hospitable. She was responsive and VERY helpful with local recommendations. There was lots of material available, to inform your exploration of Acadia National Park. We had a great visit!

We spent a wonderful week on MDI and Ken & Cyd's carriage house was perfect. It's a very comfortable, immaculate, and well-equipped place for two. It's in a great location just outside of SW Harbor and the rest of the "quiet side". We walked every day, including one day directly from the property to the trail that takes you to Somes Sound. Totally recommend.

Charming and comfortable

We agree with other reviewers about the very nice hosts, and the cleanliness and comfort of the carriage house, which is exactly as advertised. Highlights of our stay included walking to a nearby hike and beach, reading in the hammock under the pines, and enjoying the quiet and peacefulness of the location. We would definitely return.

We can't say enough wonderful things about this property. I usually bring my cleaning supplies with me and somehow forgot this time. The carriage house was spotless. The home is well stocked with anything you may need. The location is the ideal spot for exploring Acadia. The trail through the woods leading you to a short walk to town or a hike to Acadia trails with unbelievable views was an unexpected surprise. We met Ken the day we arrived couldn't have felt more welcomed. Excellent restaurants are close by, and the fully stocked kitchen gave us lots of options for dining in or out. We had the best popovers at the Common Good Soup kitchen. Very friendly staff and you feel good knowing that your donation is helping others in need. We hope to come back to this little gem very soon.

Wonderful place!

This was our 7th year returning to MDI but our 1st year staying at the Carriage House. Wonderful place. Quiet, peaceful, exceptionally clean, everything you could ask for. Ken and Cyd are wonderful hosts. We will be definitely returning to stay at the Carriage House.

Perfect Carriage House

This cottage was so beautiful! It feels like you are in the deep woods, when you are just a couple of miles from the harbor. Great spot for seeing Acadia and all the other harbors around. We enjoyed having a fire in the fire pit. Cyd and Ken were perfect hosts. We hope to return someday! Vacationing from Alabama.

Cottage in the Woods

The property was very nice and cozy. The location was great, just a mile or so from Southwest Harbor restaurants, and within walking distance of a grocery store. Being on the quiet side was very nice, as the Bar Harbor side was pretty hectic during the day. Very nice place, and the owners were very friendly and helpful. Absolutely would stay here again.

Quiet Getaway

Very clean and well kept carriage home. Hosts were very friendly and had lots of good information and suggestions of things to do on the island. House is on the south western side of Mt. Desert away from Bar Harbor so it is a great spot for someone wanting to be away from the crowds but still close by to the national park. Would highly recommend!

Lovely cottage in the woods

This whole environment was immaculately maintained. The cottage was spotlessly clean, well equipped and tastefully decorated. We enjoyed coming back each day after our walks in the national park and relaxing in the cosy living area. There were generous pantry provisions and lots of information on the region.

Beautiful spacious retreat

The carriage house is spacious. Full kitchen allows you to 'live-in' while you chill out in the quiet living room or bedroom. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly and appreciated the ability to store our bikes and do laundry. The hosts are gracious and friendly and there if you need anything.

Great Carriage House Unit

Nice space to accommodate two people on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island. Close to Southwest Harbor but tucked away in the woods. Immaculately clean and well-appointed unit. Friendly owners.

Amazing stay in Southwest Harbor!

We just spent two weeks at Cyd and Ken’s wonderful place! They went above and beyond to make our stay amazing. Their place is beautifully decorated (including fresh flowers) and warm and cozy. We enjoyed the fully stocked kitchen, fireplace, comfortable furnishings and great internet access. Trails into town and to Acadia are accessible from their property - quite a treat! They are very responsive to questions/requests. A perfect vacation (thanks Cyd and Ken)!

Serenity Discovered

My husband and I visited the area for five days and we could not have asked for a better experience at the cottage. We were able to cook some meals in the well appointed kitchen and relax at night with the gas fireplace. We walked to one of the Acadia trails on our first day and watched the sun rise. We visited many parts of the island and found the location to be very convenient. Our hosts were responsive and answered all of our questions. Highly recommend this gem in the woods!

We loved it!

This is the perfect place to stay for hiking and biking in Acadia. It is extremely comfortable and nicer than the photos. Cyd and Ken are great hosts and have provided everything you might need. We prefer Southwest Harbor to Bar Harbor but it is a relatively short drive to anywhere on the island. Loved that we could access some great hiking trails without even getting in the car. Exceeded our expectations!

Best rental ever!

Comfortable, clean, and cozy. Cyd and Ken are the BEST people, and their carriage house was perfect for my wife and I. The bed was comfortable (we find this to be a common problem with some rentals), and the space was immaculate. We did a lot of hiking, and coming home to a fire (inside or out) was a great finish to our days. It’s truly nestled in the woods, and you can walk to trails. Very quiet at night…very peaceful. We will stay here again the next time we head north!

Piece of Heaven

The Carriage house was even better than we anticipated! We walked in to fresh flowers and a nice welcome packet.It is immaculately clean, cozy, and oozes charm. The setting is quiet-surrounded by majestic pines. Location is fabulous-easy to access all hiking and amenities without the crowds.Ken and Cyd were phenomenal with communication. We hired Ken (super reasonable fee) to give us a private three hour “get to know the island” tour. FABULOUS!! Little did we know he does tours for bus groups😁Best way to start our stay. He is very knowledgeable and down home welcoming!Can’t wait to come back-hiking is outstanding!

Exceeded expectations!

As a cozy, comfy hideaway with beauty and privacy, the Carriage House offered us the perfect place from which to explore Acadia and surrounding areas. Not only was Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain easily accessible, but we went for day trips up to Bangor, over to Deer Isle, and across to Schoodic Point with ease. The cottage was beautiful and immaculate, and the hosts were friendly and available but not hovering, so we felt they offered all the resources we needed from hosts, but also the privacy we craved. The cottage had all the little extras one would hope for. And driving in to their place feels like you're driving into a state park, it's so beautifully situated among the pine tree woods. We highly recommend! Thank you to Cyd and Ken for their graciousness.

20 year anniversary trip

The carriage house was perfect for our trip. The hosts are very thorough and easily available without hovering. The house was clean and comfortable and the flowers around the house were just beautiful. The location is great, it’s on the quieter side of the island but less than 2 minutes to groceries, restaurants, gardens, Echo Lake and much more. There is hiking from the house, we didn’t a chance to walk that one but it’s on our list when we return. The house was private and surrounded by lush woods which was perfect. Downtown Bar Harbor was 15 minutes away on a scenic drive. There are also a couple of flower gardens within minutes from the house to enjoy. Don’t miss Ship Harbor and the seawall, they are 5 minutes away and not near as crowded as the park loop road area. Loved the island and the carriage house, definitely recommend.

There is nothing to 'not' like about The Carriage House. It is nestled in the woods, a short drive from the road, with easy access. A grocery store is a short drive away, the small town of Sout West Harbor another mile or two further. The living area (upstairs above an empty two car garage), is unbelievably spotless, immaculately cleaned and maintained. Everything you could possibly need is provided, so thoughtfully appointed. A lovely log fire, operated by a thermostat, runs on propane. Originally, I was looking for a log fire. However, this is so much easier and equally as effective, just perfect. Bathroom is shower only which suited my wife and I, and what a good shower it is! And last but not least, the wonderful hosts. They live in a gorgeous house not too far away. You must meet them, two of the loveliest people you could imagine. Thanks to them for making this stay so exceptional. The hiking and driving maps in the house and a great recommendation to an amazing restaurant in Bar Harbor (Havana), were especially appreciated. We will definitely be returning.

If there was a way to give the Carriage House a 10 star rating, we would. From the initial interaction with Cyd and Ken, to the moment we arrived on the property, and throughout our entire stay we could not have been more pleased. The carriage house was nothing short of immaculate and so incredibly charming, with not a thing overlooked. We immediately felt at home. Beautiful fresh flowers upon arrival, an ample supply of linens, an assortment of toiletries, loads of kitchen and cooking items, all in a beautifully decorated space. We made several meals throughout our stay and had everything we needed. The outdoor space was equally as welcoming and adorable, which included a pair of Adirondack chairs with comfortable cushions, a chiminea and bins stocked with plenty of firewood, and a hammock nestled in the peaceful, wooded surroundings. We had a nice fire out there almost every evening, - a perfect way to wrap up a fun day on the island. We can also not say enough about the hospitality we received from Cyd and Ken. Responsive, welcoming and professional from the beginning and such lovely people. It was clearly evident that they love hosting their guests and take a lot of pride in their place. Great getaway in this adorable, peaceful gem of a place! We can't wait to return!
