About this property

Quiet Cottage in the heart of Bar Harbor 2025 Vacation Rental Permit # 1399

Walk to everything downtown. Access the Park in minutes. Whether you are here for the stunning views of Acadia National Park or the freshest lobster in the country, you will be in the perfect location to enjoy everything that Mount Desert Island has to offer.

Our two bedroom home is located at the end of the Shore Path in a quiet pocket neighborhood. Walk one block to Main Street and you are in the heart of downtown. Restaurants, the Village Green, and shops flank the streets. One block in the other direction, you are at the entrance to the Shore Path. Catch the morning sun sparkling on Frenchman's Bay while walking past beautiful homes and gardens. Both Grant Park and Agamont/town dock can be accessed this way. Our home is walking distance to a gated playground that will accommodate ages 2-8. Furry visitors have plenty of options from this location as well. 1.2 miles down the road is the Compass Harbor trailhead.

Hop in a car, and you can be at the Acadia National Park (ANP) entrance in minutes. You can also reach the Park on bike – we provide two Trek hybrid bikes that are perfect for riding the carriage trails. Better still, avail yourself of the free, low emissions busses, the Island Explorer, as parking will be an issue both in town and in the Park. Most busses you can catch right from the Village Green minutes from the house.

After a day of exploring ANP or a lovely meal downtown, walk back to our quiet little neighborhood. Our cozy home boasts a sunporch with a reading nook, living room, and eat in kitchen with newer appliances (including a dishwasher and garbage disposal). We reserve the house for our own use so it is fairly equipped with everything that you might need. Sleep with the windows open and enjoy the fresh Maine air. Rest assure our neighbors are the best and there is no noise.

Nice vintage cottage house. Reminded me of my grandma's house. Everything was clean with all the amenities. Enjoyed the closeness to downtown Bar Harbor and enjoyed that we could walk the harbor walk and end up on the street of the cottage.

Great Bar Harbor location

The cottage was convenient to restaurants and far away enough away from waterfront to avoid cruise crowds. Would definitely come back again!

We had an amazing week in this adorable home in Bar Harbor! The home was very clean and Herb was very responsive and helpful in making suggestions for navigating through the town and Acadia. The location of the home is perfect. We could literally leave the car in the driveway and go everywhere we wanted by walking or taking the Island Explorer bus. It was great that not only was our dog welcomed by Herb but also was welcomed in the town with a plethora of water dishes, treats and dog friendly businesses. Moose enjoyed the Shore Path the most. Thanks for a great week, Herb!

Nice cottage in an excellent location.

The cottage is exactly as described. Cozy and very comfortable and clean. Excellent location in Bar Harbor, on a nice, quiet street, but easily within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants. Also located one block from the beginning of the shore path. We enjoyed our stay.

Bar Harbor Getaway

Our stay in Bar Harbor was perfect. The cottage was so conveniently located to the downtown area. Which made such a difference in never having to worry about the limited street parking. We brought our pup and walked everywhere. The shore walk is just around the corner and takes you to the beautiful harbor park. The house had everything we needed, was well stocked and was very clean. Herb and Toni were very responsive hosts and offered suggestions on dining spots, (we loved McKays!) and hiking, (the Flying Mountain hike was gorgeous!). The home is very convenient to Acadia, less than 10 minutes. The park is beautiful! So worth a visit. We hope to come back soon. Thanks for helping make our trip so memorable.

Amazing House!

We loved this house. It was perfect for our family of three. Only a few minutes to walk into town. Very close to Acadia and didn’t need to drive through town to get there. Very clean home. Includes two bikes. Great amenities like laundry. Had a whole house attic fan (though not real air conditioning) which helped cool things down since it was hot. We will be staying here in the future!

Cute classic cottage with lots of “character”. Depicted accurately in photos. It is old and worn and creaky but everything works perfectly and furniture is very comfortable. Possibly the best bed I’ve ever slept on in a rental property! And WOW - a full size washer and dryer! What a pleasure after all the tiny machines I’ve used at other properties. Many other reviews have mentioned the fantastic location and I echo that. I would give Snow Street five stars if it weren’t for the cramped bathroom, lack of electrical plugs, and the booth in the kitchen which was just too tight for me. A table with chairs would offer more flexibility for eating, playing games or working at computer. If you are looking for slick new construction this is not your place. If you want to experience rustic charming old school Maine then grab it! If you want the best area of Bar Harbor, this is it!It was convenient and comfortable and the hosts could not have been nicer or more responsive A wonderful, quaint, quirky, super comfortable property! Well done, Herb and Toni!!!!

What a great house. So convenient to the Shore path where I headed at 5 to see the sky do it’s magic. Quiet neighborhood. Loved using the bikes in Acadia. The house is so welcoming and cheery. Beautiful flowers and rocks. Walk one street and you are at restaurants that will delight you. Owners so helpful and provide all you need( and more!). Some of the nicest people I’ve ever dealt with.

Wonderful Stay

The house is quaint and a perfect location for Bar Harbor. The neighborhood is beautiful and we walked into town many evenings for dinner or late night ice cream. Having two bedrooms is so nice with the kids, we loved hanging out in the living room after they went to bed. Also loved having a washer and dryer after going to the beach a couple days. We were surprised how well appointed this VRBO was! Beach towels, blanket, chairs, toys, etc all for use. Tons of maps and family games. Nice kitchen with plenty of supplies. It felt like home on vacation, just wonderful for a family. Thank you for such a nice stay!

Felt like being home

So relaxing - great location - street quiet - made good use of lobster pot 👍 - from the moment we opened the front door. It fell like being at a family members house. If we are fortunate enough to get back to Bar Harbor, we would definitely stay there only longer. Thank you for making our time in Bar Harbor feel like being home.

Great launch pad for Acadia

The great thing about this property is it serves as a fantastic launch pad for Acadia and is walkable to all of Bar Harbor! The hosts were super kind in accommodating us and the check in process was super clear! I was a little caught off guard by how drafty the house is and not having hvac vents in the bedrooms, which meant it got super cold at night, no matter the thermostat setrings. Adults can bundle up, but it’s different with an infant that you can’t layer under blankets. I was also a little surprised by how much in person interaction there was, including knocking on windows when we were there. Clarification on how much in person interaction a guest wants for future guests may be helpful, as some of us want vacations to get away from interaction :).

Great little cottage on a quite street.

We had a great time in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We were able to walk where ever we wanted in Bar Harbor and could be anywhere in Acadia in under half an hour. The light house cruise and the carriage ride on the Carriage Roads were the best and something everyone visiting the area should do.

As usual, we had an awesome time in Bar Harbor. We just love staying at the cozy house on Snow St that is walking distance to everything and a short drive to carriage roads and park entrances. The owners make us feel welcome and are always available to help if needed. Thank you again for letting us stay at your house and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

About the host

Hosted by Herb Hess and Toni Mansfield

Host profile image
Toni and I and the kids enjoy hiking, kayaking, Family Fun Day at Seur Des Monts in Acadia (in July). We've been vacationing in Bar Harbor every summer since about 1998. We all enjoy the friendships we have formed here, which have lead to visits back to the Island every Thanksgiving as well. When we're not here we enjoy gardening, rollerskating and rollerblading, the beach, and hangin' with the kids.

Why they chose this property

Toni and I had been vacationing in Bar Harbor for about 7 years before we decided to be part of this wonderful community. Every few years we would extend our own vacation from one week to two to ... You get the idea.
Now that we have the opportunity to share Bar Harbor with our parents and kids for a good part of the summer, we reluctantly depart but are very happy in knowing that we can share the beauty of this town, island, and National treasure with many others.

What makes this property unique

McKays menu continually changes and is perfect for an American or European taste in a beautifully restored home setting, often with live entertainment and outdoor seating available, too. Say Hi to Brian when you get there.

Life would not be complete without the Farmers Market on Sunday at the YMCA parking lot from 9 to noon. We're particularly taken with the Camembert cheese rounds that we pair up with baguette bread from Hannaford's and Palacio chorizo we bring from our winter home.

We'll take these treats to Compass Harbor (see our map on this listing) for a secluded picnic, dog walk, and restful afternoon.
