About this property

Relax at this Matheson Bay retreat..

A comfortable beach house to escape all the rush
and bustle of city life.

Only 1 1/4 hour drive north of Auckland this bach has excellent facilities including a large North Facing deck opening from a modern kitchen. There are two queen beds, and four single beds available. The beach house is in close proximity to a wide range of activities including the popular Matakana Markets, Wine tasting at the many local vineyards, Goat Island Marine Reserve, Pakiri surf beach and many others.

Although the bach is only 100 metres from the Matheson Bay beach the views have been obscured by the pohutukawa trees - what a shame - not!
Special conditions:

Under the Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to bring your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels);

The bach will have been clean and tidy when you arrived. It's a lovely old bach with lots of family history so we care for it lovingly ... but ... it will never be perfect.

We expect the basics of a clean up from you when you leave - we always vacuum and mop through do the bathrooms and take out the rubbish :-).

Two nights minimum stay.
Special Holidays and Long Weekends are at "high season " rates.

We had a fantastic holiday at this house. The location is so great - just a quick walk downhill to the beach. The kitchen is well stocked with any equipment you could need, the tyre swing & hammock were big hits with the kids, the outside fireplace was great, and the deck umbrella was a lifesaver from the summer sun! Alan was a fabulous host - very easy to communicate with if & when needed.

We arrived to find the bach very clean and tidy. Although the weather didn't play ball the whole time, we still had plenty to do inside and there was heaps of room. The time we did spend outside on the back deck was special. We really enjoyed the beach with swimming and bush walks. We would come back again to enjoy this delightful Kiwi bach and wonderful, safe beach. Great communication from the Host particularly as the weather worsened. Highly recommend

AMAZING!

We absolutely loved our stay in this great house. It is spacious, comfortable, and very well set out and equipped. It has a large, shady back yard and garden perfect for outdoor games. It's a very short walk to Matheson's Bay which is a great swimming beach and a short drive to Tauwharenui, which is a stunning beach and regional park. We cannot wait to book again.

Paradise at Matheson

We had the most wonderful week in this very comfortable and well appointed bach. The flow from the kitchen area out to the deck and back lawn is exceptional, including a fantastic outdoor fire that was the centre of our evening gatherings. We are a family who spend a lot of time preparing and sharing good food and the generous sized kitchen had everything we needed to do this. And it is so great to be in a bach that has plenty of plates/bowls/cutlery for a large group. A short stroll to the beach meant for compulsory morning and evening swims and the lawn space is brilliant for outdoor games and late afternoon drinks soaking up the last of sun. This is a truly special place and will we be back again! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

The family’s favourite!

This was our fourth stay at what has become my family’s favourite holiday spot: a lovely house in a safe, grassy, bushy setting with native birds, monarch butterflies and a terrific night-sky. The house is very welcoming with a great kitchen, sunny window seats, inside/outside/breakfast bar dining options and a spacious, comfortable lounge. It works beautifully for our mixed group: children under 8, parents and granny (who likes to retreat now and then); and some daily pop-ins from friends in the district. We don’t usually use the television but it was handy during the couple of not so sunny days we had, thanks for the Netflix for the kids! The new swing seat on the deck was much enjoyed. Note to future guests: don’t do as we did this year and fail to hook the umbrella to the house - this resulted in a tear in the fabric when a rogue gust arrived, very embarrassed about that. The beach was very different this year after the storms but still offered plenty of good swimming and spots for digging moats around sandcastles. The walk to the fossil beach is another drawcard, and the waterfalls on the reserve bush walk was extra good after the rain. As ever, a top spot for a family holiday, thank you Williams family for sharing.

Peaceful bach in Mathesons Bay

We had a very special time at this lovely family bach close to Leigh. Beautiful home with great setup - spacious warm living areas with 2 bedrooms on each side. Generous and well equipped kitchen/dining opens to spacious deck with fireplace and grounds where we enjoyed cricket with the grandchildren Plenty of indoor games, lovely rocky and sandy beaches and there is a beautiful walk up past the Kohuroa Stream waterfalls. In summer the waterhole part way up would be great fun.

Better than ever!

This was my third booking of this well-equipped, comfortable property which a variety of family and friends visited at various times during the week. Some stayed a night, some three, others came up for a day for lunch and a swim because they love the house (which means the deck because that's where we sit) and the wonderful beach There's always a race to get to the tyre swing, the swing seat and the hot outdoor shower ... and that's just the grown-ups! Most of all it's loved by the grandchildren (8 and under) who on departure always ask, 'can we come back again next year please Granny?' Thanks to the Williams family for sharing this top spot!

A great short break

Fantastic location 100 m from Matheson's Bay. The house is very comfortable with a large deck that captures the afternoon sun. We enjoyed watching the family of rabbits bounce across the lawn daily and the quails and yellowhammers fossick on the lawn. The kitchen is large, modern and sun filled and it was nice to visit a place where the basics (oil etc) are included! Don't miss the native bush walk from the Bay to Leigh Road - it's a treasure, just wish it was summer so the kids could have tried the swimming hole.

Like coming home!

We have stayed at this Bach many times when our children were younger and were so thrilled to return after a break of a few years. The house had been modernised with a new layout, including new comfortable beds in all the rooms and a great kitchen space that we spent most of our time in. We love how handy Matheson Bay is to lots of local amenities/beaches - we did trips to Tawharanui, Goat Island and Matakana and also had a great meal at Leigh Sawmill Cafe. In between that there were swims at Matheson Bay, the Leigh coastal walk and Ti Point coastal walk. So much to do and such a quick drive from Auckland. Thank you Alan and family for sharing your house with us - we won't leave it so long next time!

A special bach

This is a much-loved family bach and we’re honoured to be able to share it. The beds are comfortable, living is spacious, kitchen is excellent and couldn’t be better equipped. Kids love the tyre swing and lawn, outdoor dining on the deck is what summer’s all about and the hot-water outdoor shower is the best! Tui, kereru, fantails, kingfisher, thrush and blackbirds are the soundtrack to this special spot, which is just a stroll from the best little beach ever!
