The expansive open plan layout has clearly defined, yet seamlessly connected, zones for living, dining and cooking. Accommodation is generous and indulgent, with four beautifully appointed bedrooms, two with private ensuites, each have their own fireplace. Protohouse No. V is located in the Upper Kangaroo River area of Kangaroo Valley, in a beautiful secluded location. The house overlooks the stunning valleys and rugged escarpments of Kangaroo Valley. The property is relatively remote, so plan on a 20 minute drive to the centre of the village.

Designed by Alexander Michael, this refined, off-grid holiday home blends polished concrete floors, timber-panelled walls and expansive double glazing to create a relaxed yet sophisticated home immersed in nature. Ideally positioned atop more than 110 acres, it offers exceptional privacy, escarpment views and a private atmosphere.
How is the property laid out?
Protohouse No. V is a two storey home. Downstairs is a large open plan kitchen, living and dining area that opens onto several terraces, all positioned to take in the beautiful views. Also on the ground floor is a mudroom, powder room and media room.
Upstairs there are four bedrooms, two with ensuites. There is a combined bathroom and laundry for the other two bedrooms. Each bedroom has a fireplace and opens onto its own balcony, making you feel like you are sleeping amongst the trees.
The house is off the grid with solar panels and batteries (with back up trickle feed electricity), rainwater tanks and filter system and a septic tank system.
Wi-Fi, Internet, Netflix, or Pay TV - will I have it?
Complimentary WiFi is available and a password will be provided in your pre-arrival email.

What about outdoors?
Protohouse No. V has a spring-fed heated plunge pool, perfect for hot summer days. Cleared hiking trails lead through old-growth rainforest, past waterfalls and dramatic cliff faces, and onward to tranquil meadows waiting to be explored. The four bedrooms open onto private balconies, and a series of decks and patios offer vantage points from which to savor the property’s expansive, ever-changing views.
Staying warm or keeping cool?
Cooling options include opening up the home to catch the breeze, utilising the large ceiling fans in the living area, and all bedrooms have ceiling fans.
All windows and glass doors are double-glazed, thus retaining the heat from the abundant sunshine plus a large JetMaster firebox in the living area. Firewood is supplied but you may need to get kindling from the bush.
What about sheets, towels and other supplies?
Protohouse No. V supplies all bed linen and bath towels.
Parking for cars, etc?
Protohouse No. V has ample open air parking on the driveway.
