About this property

Bison Pines-Peace & Quiet South of Custer-Secluded 51 acres. No Cleaning Fee!

If you want peace and quiet, you will certainly find it here. This 900-square-foot studio (one-room) cabin sits on 51 acres with beautiful views of the Black Hills to the north and a nice outcrop of rocks, trees, and meadows to the south for wildlife viewing. Bring your hammock and listen to the wind in the trees.

This is a quaint one-room, smoke-free, cabin, and it is the perfect venue for a couples’ get-away or a family adventure. Sleeping accommodations include a king-sized bed and two extra-long twins (which can be joined together for a king). The kitchen is well-equipped with a coffee maker, Keurig, toaster, mixer, blender, and other necessities to make meals away from home easy to prepare. The gas grill is just outside for those who want to take in the beauty of the Black Hills while grilling over an open flame. After a long day, unwind with a bath or shower, taking full advantage of the complimentary shampoo, conditioner, soap, and hairdryer. All linens and towels are provided.

Keyless entry allows you to come and go as you please and makes check-in and check-out a breeze. Fiber optic high-speed internet allows you to upload those vacation pictures effortlessly. Dish TV keeps you up-to-date on news, weather, and your favorite shows. The smart tv allows you to stream from your favorite platforms.

We have had the opportunity to host the best guests since we purchased the property in 2020. Our personal home sits next door on the same acreage, where you will most likely see us and our family dog, Cooper. She is usually the 1st to greet the guests. Naturally, we will not intrude, but we are not too far away should a question or concern arise.

Miles of the Black Hills National Forest trails are just down the road for UTV's/ATV and horseback riding. Mickelson trail, 1 mile away, offers horseback riding, hiking, and biking. After a full day of sightseeing, you can enjoy an evening of relaxation sitting under the stars and roasting S'mores by the gas fire pit. Provided hammocks offer an opportunity to sway between the trees while listening to the whistling pines. We have been lucky enough to have elk, turkey, whitetail, and mule deer stroll through the property.

Custer State Park, 20 miles away, has 71,000 acres in the Black Hills and is home to abundant wildlife, including 1500 wild bison and wild donkeys, camping, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, or simply relaxing. Wind Cave National Park is approximately 15 miles away, where you will see buffalo, antelope, coyotes, and elk. Jewel Cave National Monument, 30 miles from Bison Pines, is home to the third-longest cave in the world. The Mammoth Site Museum is located in Hot Springs, just 20 miles away. Cascade Falls and Evans Plunge are also in Hot Springs. Head north of Custer to Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Needles Highway, and our favorite, Sylvan Lake. Take a day trip to the Badlands, Spearfish, Lead, Deadwood, or even Devil's Tower in Wyoming.

Perfect Cozy Comfortable
These folks have put together the most welcoming, cozy, comfortable, thoughtful place imaginable. If you enjoy down to earth tasteful accommodations with MANY little extras this is the place! I was surprised by the complimentary bottle of table wine, not one but two white noise machines (which I loved!), a nice pedistal fan, body wash, shampoo & conditioner (not the cheap stuff either), well stocked Keurig machine with LOTS of K-cups/options, paper towels, aluminum foil, VERY NICE NEW nonstick pots & pans, Cutco knives etc… they really seemed to think of everything! Even the shower had fantastic water pressure….. Maybe a billionaire would have found something to complain about, but we sure couldn’t!!! Plus Jim and his wife Carmen are lovely people, very welcoming and gave us numerous restaurant suggestions (all which were fantastic!) Couldn’t have been a nicer place with nicer hosts. Thanks Jim & Carmen

Wonderful
This is our second Fall staying at Bison Pines and it was wonderful. We spent some amazing days hiking in Custer and exploring Hot Springs. It was great to have a cozy place to come back to and relax. Carmen and Jim are superb hosts and we loved our morning and evening visits from Cooper.

About the host

Hosted by James or Carmen

Host profile image
Jim is a retired Navy pilot, and Carmen is a teacher. We have raised 4 children who are now off on their own adventures. After traveling and living around the world, we decided to settle in the Black Hills. We love sharing the beauty we found with others.

Why they chose this property

The peace and quiet of Bison Pines drew us here. We can sit on the porch and watch wildlife, stargaze, and explore nature's beauty just outside our door. There are trees, outcroppings of rocks, open space, and wildlife. The sunsets and sunrises are picture-perfect. We love sitting on the porch, sipping coffee, and looking out over the Black Hills.

What makes this property unique

If you are looking for a remote setting away from others, this is your place. There are no city lights to interfere with stargazing. Cooper, our rescued Australian Cattle Dog/mixed breed is ready to meet you. Cooper is a little shy initially but loves to play once she gets to know you. She is ready to walk around the property. Depending on the time of year, you may see deer, turkey, or elk passing through the property.
