Family of 6 and first time in UP. The owner was prompt when we had questions before and upon arrival. The setting overlooking the Houghton Canal was serene, a perfect week getaway for our family. The home was well equipped and clean. We really enjoyed the use of the kayaks and dock area. We stayed a week, and took trips to Copper Harbor, Pictured Rocks, and nearby Agate Beach. This home is a few minutes from Lake Superior, Breakers Beach (sunsets). Downtown Houghton had shops, restaurants, coffee shops. Walmart was a few minutes away. We would stay again!
We always have a long list of things we want to do when we come up, and this was a great home base for all our excursions. Plenty of space for everyone, beautiful view of the sunrise, and everything we needed for a great stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - perfect for visiting with our son & his family who live in the area. We got to meet & visit with the owner who shared some history of the cottage and surroundings which made it even more special. Everything was as described - clean, very nicely decorated & comfortable. Thank you for a great stay!
Enjoyed our stay. Will is very good host. Loved location on lake. Some closets would be nice, very comfortable place. We would definitely stay here again.
The place was exactly as described. Will greater us as soon as we arrived and made himself available if needed. Recommend for a single family looking to relax and the peninsula.
This was the perfect place to stay during our visit to Michigan Tech. We were able to bring our boat and dock it at the private pier. It was very well stocked with everything we needed for our family vacation. Very comfortable, lots of space. Loved the fire pit and the patio.

Thanks for your stay Lisa we would love to have you back.
This property had everything we needed. Most importantly, we had a plumbing issue and the property managers were on top of it instantly with a resolution in lightning speed. Really impressive customer service. Very peaceful location with view of the canal across the street.
This property was tidy, relaxing and had a gorgeous view. The interior of the house had a fresh, clean look. We enjoyed using the canoe and having a bonfire with our children. They both enjoyed the hammock swing in the backyard. There were not a lot of staple foods in the kitchen, so if you needed anything, they were I would recommend going to the Walmart in town 12 minutes away. Also, the road between the house and the lake is a busy one, so this is something you may consider when bringing small children there.
This was a wonderful little place close to everything. We could visit our son at MTU and also explore the area easily. It was unseasonably hot, so we missed the AC, but we were provided with fans that helped. Kitchen was fully stocked. Beds were comfortable, but if adults are planning on sleeping on the bunk bed top or bottom, recommend bringing a foam pad. (We had one already, which was great.) It was really helpful having a laundry there. Bathroom was clean and efficient, but bring your own soap/shampoo. There's no TV, which many probably love, but we're big babies and need to crash and unwind once the little kids are in bed, so we bought a cheapie at Walmart and gave it to our college kid when done 😆. All in all a wonderful stay. We would definitely come again and recommend to others!
Will was a great host! We had an amazing week. I have a 1 year old, so when we showed up to find an extra booster chair in the kitchen and spare diapers in the bathroom, it was a nice touch. The view of the lake is incredible. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, silverware, wine opener, etc. which made cooking very easy. The ONLY downside I found was being right on a curve in the road, it was difficult to see cars coming. However, the road is NOT busy, and my 4 year old listens really well. The dock is also far enough from the road, so I wasn’t concerned being down there at all. We have a family cottage nearby so we spent a lot of time there, but I would not hesitate booking this house again. We had a great time. Thanks, Will!
We did not stay even one night at this property. The listing was deceptive: the only exterior photo was taken from a distance, hiding the rotting siding, crumbling chimney, unfinished roof with exposed felt, ripped screen door, and even a trash can left full on arrival. A broken window contained a painted rock that read “Here they are,” which was unsettling. Inside, the floors were uneven, and one bedroom had a flimsy interior door paired with its own exterior door leading directly outside. The grill was filthy with old food. The entire property felt unsafe, neglected, and nothing like the listing suggested. We left immediately and had to book a hotel because the conditions were so disturbing. Additionally, we received no check in instructions and the property was unlocked on our arrival. In my view this presents a security risk.We attempted to contact the owner about a refund, but they did not respond. Once we returned home, we filed a complaint with VRBO, but the only refund issued was for the first night — seemingly under the assumption that our issue was just a loud refrigerator and a leaky faucet. The real reason was that the property was fundamentally unsafe and grossly misrepresented. Be warned: if you encounter issues, contact VRBO immediately rather than waiting for the property owner. This listing should not be on the platform. Avoid this rental.
We had a group of 7 family/friends (5 adults, 2 high school daughters) staying at the cottage for 5 nights while our 3 sons attended hockey camp at MTU this week. The house could not have been more perfect. It was very clean, spacious, decorated adorably and very comfortable. The proximity to the water and dock to tie up our boat was a game changer from the previous years we have stayed up in Houghton and had to put the boat in at the launch downtown each time we wanted to use it. We got to enjoy daily fishing, tubing, kayaking (provided on site), paddle boarding, quiet reading and sunbathing at the waters edge and relaxing cocktails at the bay. It was a quick 10 minute drive to town and easy access to all the peninsula has to offer. The house had everything we needed, but because we were a larger group we did bring extra towels and bought a few wine glasses since there weren’t any in the house. The host, Will, was fantastic with communication for entry and very responsive to our needs. The check out process was simple & easy. Many rental places have you cleaning and stripping beds and even starting laundry then still charge a huge cleaning fee… not here! Just an easy wipe down of counters/table and towels in hamper. Definitely adds to the vibe that you are on vacation! The property & house are even better than described online. 100% recommend renting here and interacting with Will. He’s laid back, kind, & has some great stories. I hope to be able to come back and stay again
Excellent accommodations & location !

Dock , canoe, kayak ,swimming & fishing !
Host was great & informative ! Highly recommend this property ! Will definitely return 😃
My wife, daughter and I enjoyed staying at this house in Houghton. The location was perfect with direct access to the water. Do not hesitate to book this house. Will and his family are excellent hosts. We are looking forward to a return trip to the area next summer.
The cottage was clean and recently renovated. It's nice and bright and has a great view. It is basic but had everything we needed. We stayed with 4 adults and had plenty of room. I think 6 would fit fine as long as sharing 1 bathroom isn't an issue. We cooked several meals and found the small kitchen worked. We also appreciated having a washer and dryer. It doesn't have a dishwasher or very many outlets, but we didn't miss them.
Will, the owner, met us at check in and was very welcoming. We had a request during our stay and he took care of it immediately. I would happily recommend this cottage if you are looking to stay in this area.
Will and Lori were great. They met us as we were unloading and asked if we needed anything. The house location make it easy to day trip up to Copper Harbor or down to Iron Mountain. Beautiful sunrises from the patio looking out to the Portage Lake. And beautiful sunsets a few minutes away at the black sands beach.
As I pulled into the driveway with my family. I immediately thought I was at the wrong address. There is a boarded up patched window being the first thing you see and a run down garage. It seemed more like something you'd find on foreclosure auction and not something you would pay lots of money a night for. The inside of the house seemed decent enough until we started getting settled in. We found dirty socks, stained sheets and blankets, one bed had pillows with no pillow cases, a poor redo job. There is no AC and the screens on the windows are not of the best quality allowing a huge amount of bugs into the house. We did request a couple fans and never received a reply. We also found a huge clump of hair wrapped up in one of the clean wash towels in the bathroom. There is a door marked private but unlocked, that room has access to the outside and is only locked with 1 2x4 with 2 screws from the inside which could be easily broken into and makes the house very unsecure. Once we made our way to the beach we found a dock that isn't private the owner apparently rents one side of it out to someone else making it very hard to fish off of with our kids. The dock is very wobbly and in need of repair or replacement. The description "beachfront" is inaccurate. It is a waterfront or lake view as there is no beach. However the bottom is sandy and okay for swimming as in the description states. It's just not a beach as the search filters say in this listing. There was peices of wood in the water along the side of the peir with rusty old nails sticking out of it that we had to move to make a safe place for the kids to swim. The pictures are very deceiving and make the house and property look a lot better than they are. Overall it could have been worse but not worth what we paid. We took our kids on vacation thinking we would have a very nice house to impress them with and we were all disappointed. The price doesn't reflect the quality. This would have been more acceptable at a hundred per night with all extra fees included in that price. Being landlords ourselves we would never think of renting a house in this condition especially at that price. The location is great, the lake is beautiful the water was nice once we cleared out the hazards. There is a lot to do in that area and the house and property does have potential.
We were desperate for a new rental - when we couldn’t get into our original property. Will and Lori did a quick turnaround and got us into their place a day early! The cottage was adorable - with every thing we needed! The location was perfect - we went to copper harbor and to the porcupine mtns- and so many places in between! We used our paddle boards at this place - so easy! Highly recommend this property and the hosts!!
