About this property
"Little House" a sweet cabin near Montpelier & Maple Corner, Calais, Vermont
Sweet & simple Vermont cabin living, "Little House " is just two miles to Maple Corner & Curtis Pond and 8 miles to Montpelier. Small, 2 bedroom 2 bathroom cabin on 6.5 mostly open acres.
The perfect peaceful spot for a Vermont vacation - or staycation. Or extend your stay and work remotely (the new fiber internet is amazing!). Guests fall in love with this house and many guests now return each year.
Central Vermont has a lot to offer in the summer; farmers markets, live music, swimming, kayaking, fishing, hiking & biking (the roads adjacent to little house are popular running and biking loops). There are many ponds and lakes in Calais and miles of gorgeous county roads. Bring your boats and your bikes and your!
Setting: mountain & meadow views. Outdoor shower & cozy screened porch, Heat pump/AC (not in each bedroom but in the open living space), high speed Fiber Wi-Fi, softened & filtered well water, solar panels, mature blueberry bushes, strawberries, apple trees, lilacs and perennials.
Sunny, bright, clean & simple interior. Wood and tile floors. High quality cotton bedding & towels. 2 bedrooms (upstairs is the larger bedroom with queen bed. Downstairs a smaller bedroom with one twin bed). Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Fabulous star gazing. Prime firefly viewing in the spring. Spectacular foliage in the fall. Mowed walking paths (and a tent site should you wish to pop a tent) and immediate access to many local trails and dirt roads great for walking, running or biking. There is an outdoor fire pit for small contained fires, a hammock in the garden and the 3 season porch is lovely any time of day for reading and relaxing. Children are most welcome at Little House, there is a small selection of toys and books and a few baby items at the house.
There are plenty of opportunities to see and hear wildlife from the house. We regularly see deer in the back field & hear coyotes & owls (if you get really lucky, you may hear a loon from nearby Bliss Pond or see our resident bitterns).
Within 2 miles you will find: Curtis Pond (swim area and boat launch), The Maple Corner Community Store (and US Post Office), The Whammy Bar (food and live music Thursday - Saturday), The Maple Corner Community Center, The Old West Church (music and literary events), The Kent Tavern (with stone walking labyrinth and an amazing art show in the fall), The historical Robinson Sawmill, The Adamant Music School, The Adamant Co-op, The Adamant Community Club, Peck Farm Orchard and Templeton Farm. Montpelier is less than a 15 minute drive.
Calais and Montpelier (Exit 8 off Interstate 89) are located in Central Vermont. You can easily get to "The Valley" the Waitsfield/Warren area (Exit 9) or to the Stowe/Waterbury area (Exit 10) in under 40 mins. Burlington and Lake Champlain is just under one hour North on Interstate 89. And Montreal is only 2.5 hours away!
Things you WILL NOT find at Little House: TV, cable, microwave or dishwasher. No harsh cleaners or detergents. There is no wall to wall carpeting or vinyl flooring, scented candles or air "fresheners." Food delivery services or Uber/Lift to not service Calais. (You must have a vehicle to get around).
Please note: both bathrooms are very small. There is no bathtub.
"Little House" is my primary home and not managed by a rental agency.
In spring 2022 I purchased a small "tiny house" as a remote studio/office space. It is situated in the back corner of the property (far from the main house, with a separate driveway). During your stay I may be in the tiny house (with my medium sized Goldendoodle, Bleu) traveling, or staying near by. Please note: my early 20's son Finn lives in the basement apartment. There is a separate entrance. He works for a local non-profit media company and makes himself scarce when we have guests. But he can also be called upon should you need anything! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Also, feel free to message me if you wish to book an extended stay (lower rates would apply) or if you have a special event like a wedding or a request for dates that are currently "blocked out" on the availability calendar. Thank you! ~Jennifer of Little House

About the host
Hosted by Jennifer Whitman
I'm mid 40’s ish with two young adult children and one mini goldendoodle pup. I enjoy gardening, Pilates, photography, and jumping in the ocean whenever I am close enough to do so. I wish I could live on a mountaintop or a remote island or lighthouse -- but my tiny house is the next best thing.
Why they chose this property
I love the rural character of County Road in Calais. It’s very scenic with a good combination of forests, meadows, farms and homes. "Little House" is my primary home. In 2022 I set up a small "tiny house" for myself as a remote office space. It is situated in the back corner of the property (far from the main house, with a separate driveway). I hope to rent out my primary home for a few months a year while I travel and retreat to my tiny, simpler, "Littler House."
What makes this property unique
For a "Little" house, it has a lot to offer. Lots of different spaces to work from home from or to enjoy meals. The location is perfect for getting out to the ponds or heading into Montpelier. Six open acres is very relaxing and fun for folks with kids. The outdoor shower is a bonus when you come home from a swim! The house is very cozy and sweet. Everyone who comes to visit just loves Little House!
