This old farm house had all of the charm of my grandparents’ home!! Everything was very clean and well cared for! The only noise was from the birds, who are abundant! Thank you for the relaxing place to stay!!

We enjoyed it and thought it was a very good value for the price. It’s not fancy but it doesn’t need to be. It was a bit dusty here and there, and the towels were clean, but they were old and smelled a bit musty. Those things didn’t bother us much since it was a great price and cool location

The Norskedalen Farmhouse was a great place for five of us gals to stay. We were able to walk around the gorgeous grounds, dotted with little houses/buildings built in the mid-1800's.The beds were comfortable. A large kitchen table. It is an old historic farmhouse, so creaky. We went to the Norskedalen Nature Heritage Center and hiked trails (loved the "Troll Trail").

It's a great restful place to get away to

This old farm house is at the end of a long drive-way to give you solitude. The beautiful bluffs of Vernon County surround you for wonderful views. I've been coming back here every year for like 4 years running because I know I'm going to get a peaceful stay here. I strongly recommend this place is you just want a lovely place to relax in.

Farmhouse

This was a really neat stay. The old farmhouse was as described. It was fun to stay on the grounds with the other historical buildings and walk around to read the signs about them. Very peaceful and quiet, and we saw a couple deer running on the property too.

Unique, cute place

We enjoyed your lovely and historic home. The beds were comfortable and the piece of property was amazing. My kids said it got a little hot upstairs, but the fans and of course the AC helped! Pleasure doing business with you.

It reminded me of my grandma's house. Brought good thoughts of the olden days. A lot of historic buildings on property to check out. The Lady in charge was very nice and quick to help.

Wedding Stay

Stayed here leading up to my wedding at Norskedalen. It was such a fun experience to stay on a gorgeous property surrounded by historic buildings. The home itself was charming with lots of character, while I was surprised there wasn't a TV it was really pleasant to be "forced" spent more intentional time with the family that stayed with me. The home offered wifi which was helpful for my hair and makeup persons when they came out. Would absolutely stay here again!

We booked this property for our mini vacation to the Driftless Region. While this property was fine for a place to sleep and was on a nice piece of quiet land, we did not have the best overall experience with our stay. We received one quick, generic check in message about 3hrs before our arrival. Questions we had were messaged back and were not returned at any point during the three nights we were there. This property is a very old farmhouse that was not adequately prepared for our arrival. It was clear that the building had not been opened up or aired out in a long while. The entire house smelled of moldy, wet basement. Cleaning supplies and processes in place were not picked up prior to our arrival. Advertised amenities like the coffee pot did not work. We spent an evening trying to clean the coffee pot but after seeing what came out of the machine during the cleaning cycles we chose to just not use it. There was an active hornet nest somewhere in the front patio so if we did try to open windows to not have to breath in the awful smell of the house, we had to chase the hornets out. There were numerous mouse traps set up in the house and in the main bedroom, so clearly there is some form of mouse problem there. We have stayed at numerous rental homes and have not had to ever write a negative review like this, but we felt as though people looking at staying here in the future should be very aware of what you are getting into.

Response from VrboOwner on 24 Oct 2025
Tyson, I am so sorry that you were not happy at the Farmhouse! I went back to the message system at VRBO, and there are just four notes there: my welcome to you when you made the reservation on 9/15/25, your reply to me on the same date; my check-in directions to you on 10/7/25, and your reply to me that you received these directions on the same date. I did miss replying about having two cars on site, but that is the extent of communication between us. I had no other messages from you, so I had no idea that you were unhappy with your visit. For those reading this review, please know that the Farmhouse is more than 100 years old, and sits in the middle of 44 acres of woods and farmland. It's a unique property, and not everyone's cup of tea. But we do have annual inspections with the county health department, which we pass with flying colors every year. And you can tell by the calendar that there are guests in the Farmhouse regularly. If you have questions about staying in the Farmhouse after Tyson's review, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me; I'm more than happy to answer any questions. Thanks - Lori

Simple Farmhouse Getaway

The farmhouse was clean, warm, and dry, a perfect example of what a farmhouse should be. If you want something super fancy, with all the bells and whistles, this may not be the best spot. But if want honest, humble, and genuine lodging there’s no place I’d rather stay locally.

About the host

I am Norskedalen's Executive Director. I truly love to share the beauty, the history, the natural resources of Norskedalen with every guest! It is especially delightful when a guest shares the experience of looking out the kitchen window as they fix their morning cup of coffee to see a family of deer still sleeping in the cabin's backyard!

Why they chose this property

The Farmhouse was built by the Skumsrud Family, as their patriarch Nils was one of the earliest settlers in Vernon County. In fact, the original one-room log cabin still stands on the property, not far from the Farmhouse! A number of historic buildings, also on the property, create a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

What makes this property unique

While the Farmhouse was built in the early 20th century, it is completely modern and cozy. You can literally watch wildlife from the sofa in the living room as you gaze out the picture window. An outdoor walking tour is available on the property, so you'll be able to see details of all the buildings as well as learn of the development of the family farm that was so prevalent just a couple of generations ago. Plus, you'll have access to Norskedalen's main campus with all the hiking trails and museum galleries during your visit!
