All guests are asked to maintain this sacred container when on the property.
When my visitors depart Bali Temple, they feel refreshed, invigorated, and much more vibrant than when they arrived. The air along our coastline has been measured to be the cleanest in the United States! The lush greenery and scenic coastline areas are inspiring.
There are many spectacular sites to visit during your stay: visit Kehena Beach, a gorgeous black sand beach where you may be lucky to swim and snorkel with wild spinner dolphins, and your (non) clothing is optional. This property exceeded all expectations. It was exactly how it was described. Just being located on the lava field was astonishing. We would stay here again.
Amazing property away from it all. The view, the accommodation, just being there was a wonderful and unique experience. We loved the views from the balcony and walk across the lava field and hang out at the beach. Wild and peaceful at the same time.
My husband & I would definitely come back! While the property was somewhat difficult to locate for the first time as GPS does not accurately pinpoint the address, the host (Rachaelle) did warn us ahead of time and provided helpful instructions to find the property. She also went above and beyond providing information regarding nearby beaches, shops, and farmer’s markets! The lava rock behind the house is something you don’t want to miss checking out- it is absolutely stunning and you can walk right across it to look out over the ocean. We were very happy with our stay!
We had a wonderful stay! It had beautiful views of the ocean and lava fields. The place was so quiet and peaceful! The house is a bit remote, but a good grocery store and coffee shop are only 15 minutes away.
This was an amazing place. Even more beautiful in person, both inside as well as the views. So comfortable and relaxing. Our last day, we hiked out to the ocean and on down the lava flows behind the house. It was gorgeous and one of our favorites of all the things we did on our vacation.
Everything was top notch. Being able to wake up to sunshine, lava and ocean was unmatched. Met a few neighbors walking the lava who raved about the owner.
Overall, the room was a pleasant stay for us—quiet and with great views. When we checked out, I accidentally left my AirPods in the room, and the host kindly promised to mail them back.
However, after the stay, I contacted the host multiple times over the past month and also asked Expedia to help follow up regarding the return of the AirPods, but I have not received any response. I’m leaving this review in hopes of getting an update on their return.
Bali Temple exceeded our expectations. Beautifully decorated, comfortable, and clean with amazing views over a lava field and the ocean. We had a hard time leaving we loved it so much!

We loved having you and hope you can come back soon.
It was a great property to stay on. The house was perfect and loved the vibes and artwork. The only downside/complaint is the downstairs guests slamming their doors all night and early morning.
We spent 8 nights at Bali Temple and now feel refreshed and renewed. The home is beautiful, peaceful and well appointed with everything you might need. In addition to waking up with the sun rising over the lava; lapping ocean; swaying palm trees and roosters crowing, the temple house also has a full kitchen, books, puzzles and games; everything you need for the beach and snorkeling; binoculars for whale watching and so much more. It is a bit remote, but for us that was a plus. The only thing I would change is to add steps to both sides of the very high bed (perhaps 3 to 3.5 feet from the floor). It’s a true paradise and definitely worth a stay.
Beautiful space right at the lava's edge in Kaimu, with the sea in the walkable distance. Comfortable space. Relaxing. Fully stocked kitchen with dishes, pans, microwave, toaster, blender. Within walking distance to Uncle Robert's Saturday Market and Store. Easy drive to Pahoa and Kehena Beach. It is a bit of Paradise with an ocean view!
We absolutely adored the accommodations at Bali Temple. So comfortable with plenty of interesting reads, beach chairs and a well stocked kitchen. We enjoyed the stars and the sound of the surf. Heads up the unit is a duplex so there was another couple downstairs.

About the host
Hosted by Rachaelle
I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. There is as much of a social life in the Lower Puna area as any big city! I fell in love with this property in ’05 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my arrival, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In the 1990 lava flow, the property was preserved as the lava swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming new ones. This newly created land now belongs to the state. There is approximately 300’ of lava between Bali Temple and the Pacific Ocean! I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years in the style I wished to live! Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is a magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.
Why they chose this property
Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here than in any other location! Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine-filled days. No air conditioning or heating is needed; although we do have air conditioning. I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back.
What makes this property unique
A natural setting as dramatic as that which Bali Temple enjoys is rare. The energy of our volcano is truly invigorating! Walks along the coastal bluffs directly in front of Bali Temple give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago...uninhabited, wild, and sensual, with the 'Techni-Colors' of Hawaii's vivid ocean and sky blues, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night. At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies! You will see sunrises and sunsets from this unique location. There are many beautiful sights to take in all along the Red Road!
