The Riviera del Gambarogno with its characteristic Ticino villages lies on the left bank of the Langensee (Lago Maggiore) and stretches over ten kilometers from the beginning of the lake to the Italian border. The Gambarogno area begins in Contone, at the foot of Monte Ceneri, and it includes parts of the Magadino plain. The historic center of Gambarogno is the place Vira with the church of San Pietro, which rises impressively above the Langensee. Vira is characterized by an unadulterated village center with closely nestled old houses, narrow streets and arcades. The largest place in Gambarogno is Magadino.
A road leads from Vira to the mountain villages of the Alto Gambarogno, from where you can enjoy many beautiful views of the Upper Langensee and the Alps. The winding mountain road continues over the Neggia Pass - the starting point for hikes to the summits of Tamaro (1961 meters above sea level) and Gambarogno (1734 meters above sea level) - to the remote mountain village of Indemini, right on the Italian border , The Gambarogno with its endless chestnut forests is a popular hiking and biking area with a network of around 200 kilometers.
The Gambarogno Botanical Garden is located on the hill terrace between Piazzogna and Vairano. The 950 varieties of camellias, 350 different magnolias, azaleas, peonies and rhododendrons grow on more than 17,000 square meters, in between ivy, pines, juniper bushes and other sometimes rare European and exotic conifers. The magnolia blossom in spring is particularly colorful.
From the banks of the Gambarogno, course ships lead to Locarno, Ascona, the Brissago Islands and other excursion destinations on Lake Langensee. The Ticino city triumvirate of Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona can be reached from Gambarogno just as quickly as the nearby Italian market town of Luino.
